To the people saying that no one would go to a sporting event in vegas and waste 3-4 hours sitting and watching... you are fools.

How many people go to UFC and Boxing matches? There are so many different things to do in Vegas besides gambling, I think putting a team there would be a real gamble with a high pay out if done correctly.

I've been looking around online, and the answer seems to be "not enough to fill the arena". Despite the fact that boxing and UFC consciously try to cultivate an "event" mindset for their competitions.

Hell, there are 1400 tickets still available on stubhub for the Mayweather fight next week.

I still stand against the idea of Milwaukee getting a hockey team ever. The Packers are the only franchise the state takes seriously, almost religiously - and I don't blame them, the Packers are great. The Brewers are perennial middle pack in the central and the Bucks are just....hopefully moving to Seattle.

Yeah but you're forgetting that little matter where boxing matches and UFC events are a one off thing, not an 82 night a year deal. And on that second point, sure, there are a lot of other things to do in Vegas other than gamble. But those things are dependent on the gaming industry being a viable option. When it's good times it works. When it's bad times it's damn near suicidal. I've seen this first hand for the majority of my life. And to top that all off, all of those different things to do in Vegas only hurts the fan base even more because it's direct competition.

And we're not saying that no one would go to a sporting event in Vegas. We're saying that trying to fill out an entire seasons worth of hockey games with drunk transients who all got into the building at little to no cost to them isn't a smart way to build up an effective and long lasting fan base.

And it's hockey. In the freaking desert. And, like, a worse desert than Phoenix. Just the very thought that they're going to have to compete for viewership with the likes of The Thunder From Down Under and Wayne Newton is probably the most OITGDNHL thing I've ever heard in the entire list of OITGDNHL things.

I wouldn't want to be in Las Vegas when the water runs out, I know that much. It was probably not a good idea for so many people to move to a desert but still maintain a yard like they're back home in Michigan.

Also the Brewers attendance is very good and has been for a while. If the Bucks weren't currently holding the winter arena sport place I'd put it at the top of my list for the next nhl city. They'd pack the place. (Vegas wouldn't be on my list because that's a stupid :censored:ing idea for obvious reasons)

What's this guy got against Milwaukee?

First off it's not an "82 night a year deal" as half the games would be on the road. Jesus come on people...

Hockey can't survive in warm or desert like climates? How long has the NHL had teams in Phoenix, Florida and Tampa Bay? Don't give me that garbage.

Vegas has sporting events all the time, Hell they just had the FIBA basketball tourny where George tore up his knee. Top story for almost a week, but no one goes to games in Las Vegas...

Apparently, it's impossible for a city to like a football team and a hockey team at the same time.

Small market teams? Yes. Give me one example where a professional football team and hockey team have been successful in a small market. Yeah, thought so.

I can't speak for Tampa Bay, but Phoenix and Florida only survive due to massive public subsidies that, in the case of Florida, are still not enough to ensure the team's survival. Phoenix and Florida are hopping out of town the inevitable day after Glendale and Sunrise file for Chapter 9. Left to their own devices, both organizations would have bolted town years ago.

I'll throw you a bone, Tampa Bay 2002 (NFL) and Lightning 2004 (NHL) and that's being generous with a two year gap considering both teams fell out shortly after winning.

So you make excuses for struggling cities but you cant respect the ideas of a potential city to host a team? Maybe all the retired citizens that moved to Florida will buy season packages and the Panthers can sign Joe Sakic too...

HAHA When? Dallas beat them in the finals? The bills and sabres haven't done anything since? Bills are rumored to be moving to canada? But yeah... they made it, let me tell you...

He's making excuses to "agree" with your point. You asked that if hockey is working in TB, Phoenix and Florida, why not Las Vegas.

He's saying that it's only working in two of those places because it doesn't work and they can't leave.

I would have thrown the Ducks in there also but they have built a great team. Shows that the climate has nothing to do with attendance. I wish the Angels would get their head out of their asses. Hamilton screwed them.

I'm not quite sure in what universe "ensuring certain municipal bankruptcy" constitutes a good idea, but I can assure you it isn't.

PS, Senior citizens will stop moving to Florida in as large numbers following the 2008 crash because, surprise! 401K holdings are not shielded from economic collapses. They will instead be forced to work past their projected retirement age or live in ever-increasing poverty that will preclude the acquisition of season ticket packages for a hockey team that plays in a swamp.

We're not doubting that climate doesn't affect attendance. The California teams prove that. We're doubting the ability of a Las Vegas team to work.

And what Angels are you watching? They just had a four-game sweep over Oakland, are 5 games up in the AL West and are the best team in baseball right now.

We aren't talking about on field/ice success, but rather off field/ice success. The fact is, despite Buffalo and the rest of upstate New York being in a slow economic decline since the 1960s, this market has managed to get people to watch both an NFL team and an NHL team for decades. Also, Bills to Toronto looks to be dead.

I love the Panthers/Avalanche series, I hope the Panthers never move but come on. If Florida can have a team, Vegas and Seattle can too. Stop worrying about the mid west. It's littered with Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Minnesota etc. The NHL wants and needs to reach out for future larger markets. As technology grows, LV could be ground breaking for not only the NHL, but for all of the major sports brands.

C... c... c'mon man! That was my thing! You stole my thunder!

Being successful on the field doesn't necessarily have anything to do with being a stable franchise. In fact, if you can keep the fanbase involved even when the team is in the dumps, it says even more about the strength of the franchise/fanbase/city.

The only group looking to move the Bills to Toronto has basically fallen apart; Bon Jovi is reportedly looking for another group to latch on to. Groups from LA reportedly stayed out of the bidding, because it would have been too hard to move the team. They're going to get either a new stadium or a super renovation (like Arrowhead or Lambeau), it's only a matter of time.

The Sabres were good from the early to mid 90s to the middle of the 2000s with only a couple of stinker seasons. Then, there was some mediocrity as they tried to cling to their remaining core from the good years. Now, they're rebuilding. In 2015, they'll start moving up the standings again. And after finishing 14 points behind 29th place, the Sabres had almost 10,000 show up to their rookie minicamp scrimmage. So things look OK there.

The Cali teams have been great, I wish the Sharks would win a cup, I really do, I respect them alot. I wish they would go back to their inaugural jersey designs with the new logo.

Oh stop with the 5 game streak, Oakland A's are solid and they are having a rough skid, don't act like that is going to get you into the playoffs. The Tigers and Royals are the real villain here.
