TBGKon
what if......since the Marlins gov't-funded stadium wasnt on the budget....the D-Rays were contracted and everything affiliated with the Marlins (owner, players etc.) moved to Tampa. I honestly have to say that if the Rays owners were not there they would have better players and i turn would draw much better. What do you all think? officeglenn
I think that, even if that happened, the new Tampa Bay Marlins would still a new field. Tropicana Field is not a marquee ballpark, and I think the Devil Rays are looking to replace in the next few years anyway, are they not? In this situation, I figure they'd probably be right back at square one in a couple of years, looking for public dollars to build a stadium in Tampa. TBGKon
I think a new stadium is wanted, but I havent heard anything about any plans being set. I think another factor why the Marlins didnt get their stadium is because the politicians assumed that if they did the plan for the Marlins, theyd eventually have to do it for the D Rays. In the D Rays get contracted, this gives Tampa the only MLB team in Florida and the politicians may be more apt to fund one team and not 2. Anyways, I think the Marlins could handle the Trop, as it is a baseball only park with a roof, so no rainouts (unless theres a hurricane)
Mac the Knife
I think it wouldn't make a damned bit of difference. Tropicana's a plophole compared to today's newer, outdoor parks, and aside from the Yankees there's not a team in MLB that would draw exceptionally well there. And Sternberg, understandably, is not eager to offer additional funds until he is the one deciding how the money will be spent. jkrdevil
This makes no sense. First the D-Rays aren't going to be contracted as posted previously on these boards they are making money. If the team makes money why would they be contracted, because the suck? Well your always going to have good teams and your always going to have teams that suck.Second, even if Tampa didn't make any money and they were contracted why would you put a new team there anyways. Teams move or are contracted when there is no chonce of making money there. If MLB thought if a team could make money there then they wouldn't contract the team. Tampa doea need a new stadium desperatly. However they aren't going anywhere and if they do it makes no sense to put a team right there immediatly. Gamingboy
Combining the Marlins and D-rays would create a unstoppable force: A good team (the Marlins) with a good farm system (D-rays). Why, all they'd need is a good stadium and then they'd be nearly invincible.Okay, maybe not.Well anyway, here's what I don't understand:Las Vegas wants a MLB team (and will supposedly will be getting the Marlins by 2008), yet looking at the 2004 total attendance rankings found here, the 51s are 48th in total attendance last year, behind such cities as: Tacoma New Britain Wilmington Lansing Trenton AlbuquerqueDaytonBoth Portlands (Oregon and Maine)PawtucketIt should also be noted that my hometown Rochester Red Wings drew better then Vegas. And to the best of my knowledge, there aren't even rumors of us getting a Major League over-45 women's wheelchair basketball league. Now I know that there's a big difference between AAA and MLB (and undoubtably, if the Marlins did move to Vegas, whatever team is there would draw better then most/all Minor league teams), but I mean, Wilmington is a class A club! Does anyone here REALLY think Vegas is a better choice then just staying in a bad stadium in Florida? Insert Witty Signature Here.

If the Marlins don't get their stadium (which was just rejected again by the state legislater) then they have no choice but to move since the Dolphins are kicking the Marlins out of Dolphins Stadium when the lease runs up. He realized his little "Dolphin town" he wants to start wouldn't survive without the Marlins. But this was a ploy to destroy any chance we had to get the 60M from the state. Even if we stay there the terms of the lease would still be the worst in baseball. 1997 | 2003

If the stadium isn't on budget the Marlins would have to pay every penny it goes over budget. If by any chance the Marlins couldn't pay that money the city of Miami can foreclose on the franchise and sell it to someone that can. But the new owners would still have to stay in Miami for the length of the 30 year lease.93% of the funding for the park is done. All they need is 7% (30M). This can get done without the state of Florida. The city, county and Marlins will meet on Monday to look at Plan B's. This problem should be resolved in 30-60 days according to the county manager. The mayor of Miami vowed on Friday that the city of Miami is gonna do everything in ther power to keep the team here. The sentiment down here in South Florida is that North Florida again showed how they like screwing us over. 1997 | 2003
