Why Hollywood, why?

What is up with Hollywood's unhealthy obsession with making crappy hockey movies? On a local channel, they had all 3 Mighty Ducks movies in a row. Now the 1st one is respectable, but the other 2? GIMME A BREAK! I combined the last 2 movies with all the penalties and rule breaking of both teams compeating, under USA Hockey Rules. I found 59....59!

When people look at me, they can't believe that I'm a hockey player. I'm a 5'4" varsity hockey player, and a defensemen mind you, and Hollywood has installed into the minds of Americans, that hockey players are toothless, big, goons! And I'm not one.

Does anyone else feel this way?

Hollywood is a bunch of idiots so its not new, and I dont think Hollywood lieks Hockey becuase they never trully treat it well on film other then a few movies here and there. Even the classic Slap shot is making fun of teh sport.

Slap Shot is a decent movie, but there's (IMO) only one great hockey movie....Miracle.

What do you expect from Disney? Bastardizing real life to get their point across.

The way youth sports are run nowadays, there's no way a coach would get away with telling one of his players to use dirty tactics to take out an opposing player (John Chaney aside). That coach would be run out of the league.

But that's how Disney gets you to root for the underdog. They have to overcome all the holding, clutching, grabbing, roughing, etc. There's no way all those infractions would go unnoticed. A few maybe, but 59 penalties?

Those referees would never work a game again in that league. Too many parents would make calls to their league's president, and the league's board members would certainly be witness to the flagrant acts on the ice.

And don't get me started on MVP (a friggin' monkey?).

Mystery, Alaska wasn't bad as far as hockey action, as long as you gloss over the fact it wasn't really Russell Crowe skating out there.

The really shocking thing is that you could accually sit through both of those movies in order to count those penalties. tried watching a Ducks movie last week because nothing else was on and after ten minutes i was like this :wacko:

I don't know about movies, but I remember a short lived television series called "Power Play". It was focused around a ficticious NHL hockey team called the Hamilton Steelheads. The main plot was about a disgraced sports agent who comes home to Hamilton to help manage the local team succeed so it wo't be forced to move south to the States. He also has to contend with a headstong (crazy) owner, a bunch of misfit players, and his messy personal life. It had an element of comedy, by not to the point of being far fetched. It was more about the business end and events off the ice, but it was still likeable- apparently not too much though...

It only ran for two 13-episode seasons, but I think it was good enough to sell collectivly on DVD. It was aired on CTV in Canada and UPN in The States. Oddly enough (or maybe not) it was produced in Canada not Hollywood.

A fan website:

On a slightly related note, I like the Steelheads logo. It looks more AHL than NHL, but I like it.

We all have our little faults. Mine's in California.

Yea, Mighty Ducks makes no sense even from a plot perpsective. I mean how does a district peewee champion go to playing in the junior goodwill games? And after winning the thee gold the go to be on the JV team in High School?

Another thing that bothers me in these youth sports film is announcers. I live in NEw Jersey never had my peewee game braodcasted. Know I know hockey is bigger in Minnesota but I'm sure the stations there don't broadcast district peewee games. Maybe some high school games but not peewee.

Hmm, 5'4"? I could take you in a brawl! :D

Just kidding...

(although I could... :D )

I liked the first one.

Second one is lame.

Third one is better than the second one...but still lame. The worst oversight is that the entire team stays together through the whole thing.

Remember, these movies introduced us to such acting talents like Josh Jackson & Keenan Thompson. I'm not sure if I'm being sarcastic there or not...take it as you will.

Hockey is a religion in Minnesota. Like football in Texas. I never thought a HS team could have a stadium with turf until I read friday night lights. I wouldn't be surprised if pee-wee matches were indeed on the radio. They have HS baseball games here and its not even that big.

I'm tough. I've taken down a 6'2" kid with a hipcheck. Provided I did fall as well. :D

Miracle was very good, and tahst my point.

THere are no other good hockey movies.

Mystery, Alaska isn't that bad.

Ah one of the greats :) and besides, anything that has Barry Melrose in it (even in a cameo) is ok with me

Kings Cross AFC -BIP, Winnipeg Falcons - TNFF, St. Louis Archers - MLF

I don't think they put pee-wee on the radio (maybe way up north). They do televise the state High School tournament and it's a big deal.

Basketball is to Indiana as hockey is to Minnesota.

A decent hockey movie is "Youngblood" in my opinion.
