Leiter picked up by the Yankees

It seems with all of the Yankees pitching troubles and the uncertainty of who would pitch tonight aganist the hated Red Sox without a 5th starter, yesterday, the Yanks aquire Al Leiter from the Marlins for a player to be named later. Leiter was actually drafted in the 2nd round of the 1984 draft by the Yankees and played 7 games for them from 1987-1989 Without Brown, Pavano, Wright and most recently Wang, the Yankees have managed to stay 1 1/2 games behing Boston in the AL East. So, can Al Leiter help the Yankees pitching to overtake the Sox and win their 8th straight division title? Yankeeman says, that a veteran like Leiter can totally be the answer in the starting rotation.

P.S. In an unrelated news item, the D-Rays designate Hideo Nomo for assignment, so another great arm for the Yanks to look at.

That's the same thing we said when we signed Leiter. Met fans warned us about him in the offseason. This was the worst signing in recent Marlins history. Leiter can't pitch anymore. He has no control over ANY of his pitches. He averages less than 5 innings a start and allows 2 baserunners an inning. He seems to get to 3-2 on ALL hitters. If the bases are juiced, forgetaboutit he has allowed 3 grand slams this year. The defense slows up behind him. If he had a 6 ERA with us I can't imagine what his ERA will be in the AL.

I loved the guy. He had 2 great years with us in 96-97. He pitched a no-no and kept us in Game 7 of the 97 WS. But his career is done.

BTW: If you think Hideo Nomo is a great arm you must be living in mid 90's.

Well, Lieter is better than some guy just called up who isn't ready for the majors yet. The Yankees are only paying 400,000 of his 3.5 million dollar contract so it's worth the gamble. Yes, Leiter is washed up but when you have 2 guys left on your starting rotation you have to take the huge gamble. When guys get healthy Lieter will be moved to the bullpen.

Just what the Yankees need, another player past their prime.

Nobody said that when Jesse Orosco played for them in '03 and I would take gus like Leiter and Orosco any day over Keith Foulke, Matt Clement or even an old fogie like Tim Wakefield and day of the week.

Oh yeah, I would rather have a late 40's reliever, rather than a 31-year old starter who is 10-3. What the hell am I thinking?

Oh! And BTW yankeesman, I like how you say:

Leiter is done the Mets knew whatr tehy were doing by not re-signing him.

As for the Yanks this is a stop gap I mean could he be anyworse then Sean Henn, Tim Redding and Darrell May, who everytime he pitches its May Day for the Yankees.

Exactly it's a stop gap.

I shall note that Yankeeman does not represent most Yankee fans. I think most Yankee fans would tell you that they rather have Foulke, Clement, and Wakefield over than Lieter and Orosco (who saw little time in the '03 playoffs). I most Yankee Fans would tell you that Lieter isn't the answer this year but this move was needed because over half of the rotation is on the DL, and he's more reliable than a bunch of AAA players.

Not trying to dis all Yankee fans, but I was listening to WFAN on the radio, and you guys think of the weirdest trades! This one guys was like, "Hey, I think the Yankees and Red Sox should strike a deal. Matsui and Williams for Ramirez, Ortiz, Damon, and Varitek. I think it's pretty even, hell the Red Sox are actually getting the better of this deal." I was like, "wtf?" :therock:

Those aren't just Yankee fan their radio callers in general. The Met fans that call in dumb too. I'm sure other areas are like that too.

A little biased? Man, I would take Leiter, Clement, and Wakefield out of that group. Wakefield is an amazing pitcher by the way. Look at his stats when he has his knuckelball catcher Mirabelli catching. Wow.

Anyways, I say good move by the Yankees. Maybe not for the long-term, but Leiter is a guy who is used to the media and fans of New York and has played well here. He is not the player he once was, even as a Met, but he will be a good player in the short-term for the Yankees. He was definantly the best option open to them.

EDIT: Oh yea, those aren't just the Yankee fans being dumbasses. I get a kick out of half the calls into WFAN from fans of each team. Woo!

The A's post game shows have crazy people like that too. Like people suggseting the A's should trade Zito, Harden, Nick Swisher, and Eric Byrnes across the bay for the rights to Bond's contract and Kirk Rueter to even out the deal. And this was just last week!!! Some crap how Bonds would bring strong leadership skills to the young A's, next year.
