WTF?

Why are there NO games on Jan 1st? That seems very odd. Isnt that when they ALL used to be?

It's a Sunday. If you'll look through the old records, you'll see that every few years, nearly all of the bowls were played on either Jan. 2 or Dec. 31, usually for this reason. This year, the NFL has their last week of the regular season on that weekend, and split the schedule nearly equally if I recall between Saturday and Sunday.

Rose Bowl History

Jan. 2, 1922 California 0, Washington & Jefferson 0

Jan. 2, 1928 Stanford 7, Pittsburgh 6

Jan. 2, 1933 USC 35, Pittsburgh 0

Jan. 2, 1939 USC 7, Duke 3

Jan. 2, 1950 Ohio St 17, California 14

Jan. 2, 1956 Michigan St 17, UCLA 14

Jan. 2, 1961 Washington 17, Minnesota 7

Jan. 2, 1962 Minnesota 21, UCLA 3

Jan. 2, 1967 Purdue 14, USC 13

Jan. 2, 1978 Washington 27, Michigan 20

Jan. 2, 1984 UCLA 45, Illinois 9

Jan. 2, 1989 Michigan 22, USC 14

Jan. 2, 1995 Penn St 38, Oregon 20

Jan. 3, 2002 Miami 37, Nebraska 14 (BCS National Title Game)

Jan. 4, 2006 TBD (BCS National Title Game)

I've decided to give up hope for all sports teams I follow

Wasn't that the reason the season started a week later? So the playoffs wouldn't compete with the make money for the bigger schools "postseason" college games.

Most companies / businesses are observing the holiday on Monday Jan 2 anyway. Whenever the NYSE is closed, it is pretty much an observed holiday (at least by the financial services / banking industries.)

NFL needs to go back to opening Labor Day weekend. The league started Sept 11th this year. I doubt it was to help the bowls because it would've made more sense to start a week earlier rather than later.

This isn't related to the bowl schedule, but I found this ridiculous:

"Colorado St. has accepted an invitation to the San Diego Community Credit Union Poinsetta Bowl"

These bowl names are getting crazy.

Well this happens every 6 years any way.

Oh, if only that were true. You are forgetting the leap years.

Let's see if OMMF is right.

New Years Day, 2006 = Sunday

New Years Day, 2007 = Monday

New Years Day, 2008 = Tuesday

New Years Day, 2009 = Thursday

New Years Day, 2010 = Friday

New Years Day, 2011 = Saturday

New Years Day, 2012 = Sunday

So it'll happen in 2012, which sort of makes NJTank correct, due to a six year difference. However, when there are two leap years in the six year period, then it'll get thrown off by a day. So it's every five or six years that this phenomenon happens.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.
