rockchalk
It's a Sunday. If you'll look through the old records, you'll see that every few years, nearly all of the bowls were played on either Jan. 2 or Dec. 31, usually for this reason. This year, the NFL has their last week of the regular season on that weekend, and split the schedule nearly equally if I recall between Saturday and Sunday.Rose Bowl HistoryJan. 2, 1922 California 0, Washington & Jefferson 0Jan. 2, 1928 Stanford 7, Pittsburgh 6Jan. 2, 1933 USC 35, Pittsburgh 0Jan. 2, 1939 USC 7, Duke 3Jan. 2, 1950 Ohio St 17, California 14Jan. 2, 1956 Michigan St 17, UCLA 14Jan. 2, 1961 Washington 17, Minnesota 7Jan. 2, 1962 Minnesota 21, UCLA 3Jan. 2, 1967 Purdue 14, USC 13Jan. 2, 1978 Washington 27, Michigan 20Jan. 2, 1984 UCLA 45, Illinois 9Jan. 2, 1989 Michigan 22, USC 14Jan. 2, 1995 Penn St 38, Oregon 20Jan. 3, 2002 Miami 37, Nebraska 14 (BCS National Title Game)Jan. 4, 2006 TBD (BCS National Title Game) I've decided to give up hope for all sports teams I follow

sj32
January 1st is the last day of the NFL regular season, so the Bowls decided not to compete and did not schedule games for New Year's Day.
Puckguy14
Wasn't that the reason the season started a week later? So the playoffs wouldn't compete with the make money for the bigger schools "postseason" college games. 2004 San Jose Sharks 7th Man Fan of the Year San Jose Gold Miners - 4x Lombardi Cup Champions

BBTV
Most companies / businesses are observing the holiday on Monday Jan 2 anyway. Whenever the NYSE is closed, it is pretty much an observed holiday (at least by the financial services / banking industries.) I doubt it was to help the bowls because it would've made more sense to start a week earlier rather than later.
TFoA
This isn't related to the bowl schedule, but I found this ridiculous:"Colorado St. has accepted an invitation to the San Diego Community Credit Union Poinsetta Bowl"These bowl names are getting crazy. WSU151
Well this happens every 6 years any way. Oh, if only that were true. You are forgetting the leap years. Let's see if OMMF is right.New Years Day, 2006 = SundayNew Years Day, 2007 = MondayNew Years Day, 2008 = TuesdayNew Years Day, 2009 = ThursdayNew Years Day, 2010 = FridayNew Years Day, 2011 = SaturdayNew Years Day, 2012 = SundaySo it'll happen in 2012, which sort of makes NJTank correct, due to a six year difference. However, when there are two leap years in the six year period, then it'll get thrown off by a day. So it's every five or six years that this phenomenon happens. Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.
