God  :censored:ing damn it.

Why do I have a funny feeling that in like two years, we'll see this headline: "Brady cut by Pats, signs with Jets"?

I didn't even know the Colts were on the radar for Vinatieri - I thought it was just Packers, 'Boys, and Pats.

EDIT: Colts also signed Jose Cortez, and that's official off the Indy Star newsroom. I don't know how official this Vinatieri signing is - he just fired his agent yesterday, and usually there's a three day waiting period for player signings with new agents.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

...so this is ensuring if the Colts need a kicker to come through in the most clutch situation, they know they'll get it. To me, Vinatieri has always been an outdoor kicker and I loved seeing him kick at Gillette when the ground was covered with snow, too bad we'll see him kick indoors for the most part now.

The Pats get weaker, that is always good. Viniateri, no matter how overrated he is, is an upgrade over Vanderjagt. Cheer up Patriots fans, you can watch Prettyboy Brady playing all by his lonesome and still think about your three (no matter how questionable) Super Bowl championships.

You're right. Gives me more time to think about the Pats beating "The Greatest Show on Turf." I'll probably watch that kick 20 more times, and laugh at Ricky Proehl's comments.

rams80, along with STLFanatic, sure like to cry a lot. Maybe it's something in Rams' fans blood.

Considering how it's arguable that the Rams franchise has never recovered from that game, I think my bitterness about the Rams losing to a team that should not IMO have been there and are only there because the ref made a bizarre call (yes its in the rulebook, no it wasn't the correct call) is justified. <_<

Also, maybe if NESPN didn't spend every waking moment pimping the Red Sox and Patriots I would take it better.

Give me some credit, though-I haven't complained about Illinois. :P (Granted my being a Peorian and Bradley's success might have something to do with that).

One word: Wow.

O.K. a few more than that. For the longest time I always thought that Vanderjagt was as good as Vinatieri, the only difference being that Vinatieri had the opportunities in the to make clutch FG's that Vanderjagt never could.

Suddenly the "idiot kicker" saga erupted.

Then all of the sudden they need a kicker just for kickoffs.

Then the whole "ripe for the picking" shenanigans that gave the Patriots motivation pretty much sealing the game before it even started. Although to his credit, Vanderjagt did score the only points in that game.

Finally, after having Peyton Manning drive him into FG range, Vanderjagt misses the biggest FG of his life. Some argued that Peyton could have gotten him closer, which I agree with, but he would have still missed that kick comfortably from 20 yards closer.

If the report is true and Vinatieri did sign, it's a nice signing for the Colts, depending on the price. The Colts are already over the cap and if they overspend on a kicker, it may do more harm than good.

I think what it comes down to is that, if the Colts do win the Super Bowl, it won't be solely from this signing and if the Patriots don't win the Super Bowl, it won't be merely because they lost their star kicker.

Just my 2 (biased) cents.

I definitely give you credit about the the Illinois fiasco. :D

And I think you've told me your side once before about the Rams/Pats, and I'm not going to argue. I probably got out of hand with the trash talk.

First off, getting back to what Unwind said about the Colts "stealing" Adam Vinatieri ... No. New England had many chances over the past couple years to lock this guy up and they didn't. They didn't seal the deal when they had the chance and now he's a Colt. Botton line, Indy did not steal him ... The Pats let him get away.

I guess this also means Vinatieri will be wearing #4 in Indy which is too bad. I was really hoping the Colts would retire that number after "Captain Comeback" Jim Harbaugh left. :P

Pats management has never let me down. I trust them. This has to be a part of their plan somehow.

I feel the same way you do. I think part of the reason they let Vinatieri go is that his leg was starting to fade a bit. If you watched the Patriots this past season, there were many 45+ yard FG situations where they opted to punt instead of kick the FG. Adam will certainly benefit from kicking indoors if this is the case. I trust Belichick, Kraft, Pioli and everyone else in the Patriots' Front Office. I just hate saying goodbye to an old friend, and I just don't see (other than the indoors thing) why he had to sign with Indianapolis, of all teams.

There's a first time for everything my friend...this is also the same front office that was behind the absolute great FA pickups of Chad Brown, Monty Beisel, and Duane Starks in just one offseason alone...

The Pats unwillingness to sign Vinatieri literally makes no sense to me. Whoever you sign to replace him is already a downgrade. Period. No question about it. You have $20 million to spend under the cap. What is Belichick and Co. doing? Am I missing something?

Here's a very impartial view of the transaction already up on Vinatieri's Wikipedia Page.

On March 21, 2006, WEEI in Boston, as well as ESPN, reported that Vinatieri has agreed in principle to sign with the Indianapolis Colts. This move was a surprise for both the Patriots and the fans, as it signals a serious flaw in his moral character as he signed with a heated rival for only a few more pennies.

How quicky Pats fans have turned on their Super Bowl Savior. Wow.

rofl, I love wikipedia.

Anyways, wow, didn't see this coming. This has ramifications in Green Bay since I heard that if the Packers didn't get Vinateri, then Favre might finally retire...But that's just word of mouth, nothing really official.

But I bet the Colts must be happy, they fixed the problem of Mr. "Miss a kick 20 yards to the left in an indoors stadium" Vanderjagt.

He had a better year (in terms of percentages) in 2005 than in 2001 in all categories, except for 50+ yarders. He had a far better year last year than in 2003. Adam also had more touchbacks in 2005 than any other year.
