exactly, pat....in my opinion, that's the only way to curve the bill of your cap.

i manually break down the crown and put a baseball inside the bill and rubberband that bad boy up for a couple days. after that, it's good to go.

I used to do that until this little old lady at a hat shop in Cooperstown scolded me me for it. Her way is better. Soften the glues in the front of the cap with a hair dryer. Then put the cap on and mold to your liking, softening it as you go with said dryer. It works great without taking the chance of gouging the hat or spending hours with the tweasers, pulling out those plastic threads.

So how many of you (like myself) are going out and getting backup wool 5950's of your favorite teams this winter?

Unfortunately the Cardinals have 3 hats so I'll have to drop $80 on caps I'm not going to wear for probably 5 years.

I replaced my Cardinals home and alternate hats this year for the first time since 1998, and I replaced the road hat last year for the first time since 1996.

I really hope the company continues to make a wool version of the 5950, even if it is "fashion," because a polyester cap is never going to work for a person like me.

The problem is, I have a large head. Somewhere in the neighborhood of a 7 5/8 and 7 3/4. That poses a problem because anything above 7 1/2 is not well stocked in most stores, if at all. I often find, especially at Lids/HatWorld stores that they don't even stock most caps over 7 1/2. If I DO find a store that stocks my size, there's usually only 1 or 2 of each size, leaving me not a lot of choice of "trying on different ones to find one that fits right." It just can't happen.

Also, a second problem is, I don't live in Cleveland. This is a problem because Indians hats (the team I root for, and whose hats I buy most often) are not well stocked in Buffalo (and especially not in Southeast Ontario where I'm going to be moving) and so I usually have to resort to buying my hats on the 'net.

In order to get around the fact that I have to buy my hats on the 'net, I usually buy the larger size, 7 3/4, and SHRINK the hat to fit my head. This serves two purposes. 1) it makes the hat perfectly fitted to my head. 2) it eliminates the high crown, which doesn't look right on me.

And so, 100% polyester eliminates my ability to find an authentic MLB cap that fits me correctly and looks good when I wear it. Seeing that I "collect" them, this seems to be the death knell for my collection. I'm going to be stuck wearing only the "four sizes fit all" cotton hats, which really defeats the purpose. I'm actually fairly distressed by this switch to polyester. It doesn't work for someone like me at all.

R.I.P. wool 5950.

Heh, you aint had trouble finding a hat until you've had to look for a size 8 hat. 7 5/8s are plentiful by comparison <_<

far as not living in Cleveland, cant' help ya there. I have a similar problem in that I can't find any Avs ish here anymore (basically, a hockey-holic would hate living in Racine...despite the fact that it gets real cold here, it literally reeks of hockey apathy here. nobody knows where the local rink is...that is, if they know it exists at all, and you'll never see anybody playing outside of gym class floor hockey. I can count the number of hockey players I've met on one hand-and I don't need all five fingers)

Eddie, just come out and say it: hiphoppers, thugs, wankstas and wiggers. My style's hiphop and I don't get the "check me out I'm a thief" look either.

It's supposed to look like that. You want your hat to look dirty. Who wears an immaculate hat?

Yeah but when your spending $30 on a hat it helps to have it look as clean as it can for as long as it can.

Yeah, but I was ashamed that I had to buy a brand-new hat for a team I've liked for quite some time (it accidentally got thrown away) so I was not really trying to prolong the condition of the hat. I wasn't trying to get it dirty, though. That's just contrived.

I tried on one of the new 5950's at the hatclub here in Arizona. Man do these hats suck. Not only do they not fit like the wool one's. The sizing is screwy. I wear a 7 1/4. That size was too big. I tried on the next size down. It was too small. I do believe that NewEra is going to burn itself with this crap. I will never buy a NewEra hat as long as it is made with the new material.

Which Hat Club did you go to?

And did they still have the old ones? I have a membership there so I get the discounted price

Accually, id wait a bit before disowning the new 59Fifty completely. The first run of them that I saw were HORRIBLE!!!! Probably the worst looking caps ive ever seen, but when my store got them this past week I decided to do what I did with the old caps and run through the whole rack looking for one that fit me right. Sure a bunch of the fit me like crap, but once I found one that fit me right it literally fit like a glove. Ive been wearing this hat for the past few days and I have to say it is by far the most comfortable hat I have. the material is smooth and not scratchy like the old ones, its WAY cooler than the wool 59Fiftys, and theres pretty much zero worry about it shrinking because you took it off while it was wet or sweaty. In fact im so pleased with the first one I bought another one today, jsut so i can put the first one I bought through a series of tests to see just how much I can beat it up before it finally konks out (EX: Soaking it i warm water, sweating in it, ect ect). Just give the new hats some time, if you liked how the old 59Fiftys fit, youll come around on these and I bet youll even be very pleased.

maybe if you didn't wear that Buffaslug on your knoggin' you could get into a smaller hat there Barney.

:P

NO! Barney's toupee stays on until the slug is banished from Buffalo!

I really need to see about getting some wool 5950's this week while I still can.

1. The wool hats will become collectors items over time and will have value. Buy now when you see deals.

2. Bring back the low profile.

3. Can someone please tell New Era to make sizes consistent--I'm tired of guessing whether I should get a 6 7/8, 7 or 7 1/8.

4. Can someone also tell New Era not to make these hats that make me look like I have a cake on my head. I have a Marlins teal/black that I can't even wear because the stinkin' top must be 5 inches high (got mail order). See #2. Low Profile don't have that issue, and look more like what people wear.

Bring back the Whale!

For me, part of the fun of buying a 5950 was breaking it in. Buying a cap too big, then wearing for months and months until to gradually shrank to the size of my head. Not only do I end up with an extremely comfortable cap, but I have fun with the cap in the process. I hope they begin making low profile caps.
