random_ax
I asked this once before and nobody could find it so I'll ask again. When Tennessee was deciding what to call the team once it was out of Houston, there was a big effort by this group (or one guy maybe) to have then called TENNESSEE COPPERHEADS. He had a website and everything. Now, I know that there was some helmet design that showed a copper colored helmet with a faded oil drrrick on it but this logo had NOTHING to do with the Oilers...it was a slithering copperhead crossing a maple leaf..... I kinda liked it. Anybody know where that can be found?

Broken Record
I remember that logo with the leaf. Haven't seen it since that site went down years ago. If I find it I'll post it up.
random_ax
The helmet had no logo on it, only the faded oil derrick.I'm fully ware of the helmet with the faded derrick. This logo was designed by a guy who had a website devoted to naming the team Copperheads and it showed a slithering snake crossing a maple leaf .... was a pretty cool logo. anyone? NMLSooner
I lived in Kingsport, TN when they were searching for a name. I think the guy who did the Copperhead design was from that area in east Tennessee. It might be in an archives of the paper in Kingsport, Johnson City, or Bristol. I seem to remember a spread in the paper, but I've slept since then. http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq200/wyopokes2/Sooners.gif http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq200/wyopokes2/Cowboys.gif

Did he get much support for copperheads in your memory? He did the tne eastern part of the state, at least. Most of the people their said they would continue to root for the Redskins & Colts(Peyton Manning worshipers) because the owner had promised a nickname that reflected on the entire state. Instead he chose Titan in part because Nashville has some Greek architechture and has the nickname "Athens of the South", which is kind of funny since there is already an actual Athens a little further south in Georgia ! http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq200/wyopokes2/Sooners.gif http://i447.photobucket.com/albums/qq200/wyopokes2/Cowboys.gif
Broken Record
I found an article about the Titans from back in that time period in the ETSU student paper I believe, but it didn't picture the logo.Regarding Athens, there is also an Athens in TN. It's about half way between Knoxville and Chattanooga.Jumping around, but about the East TN fanbase, I think it's pretty well split between the Colts, Titans and Cowboys (at least in Knoxville anyway). Personally I don't agree with pulling for players instead of teams, so I don't agree with the Peytonites who live in Tennessee but cheer for the Colts. My local affiliate carries all the Titans games. If I go to the local sports store or WalMart, they carry Titans memorabilia. The Titans are featured on my six o'clock news and in my newspaper. To me, that makes them my home team. cranium
I lived in Nashville at the time they were considering new names and I do not recall ever seeing a copperhead logo mockup of any sort. They just floated the name along the several others. I don't think that the team ever publicly released a possible copperhead logo. The NFL probably has one locked up in its vaults just in case. leopard88
I see those stars made it to the Titans logo. Do they have any special significance for Tennessee?Tennessee State Flag -- From 50states.com:The three stars on the flag represent the three different land forms in Tennessee. Mountains in the east, highlands in the middle and lowlands in the west. On the flag these regions are bound together in an unbroken circle. The field is crimson with a blue background for the stars. The final blue strip relieves the sameness of the crimson field and prevents the flag from showing too much crimson when it is limp.EDIT -- I'd have been first if I hadn't added the history. Also as a note of obscurity, Tennessee was the 3rd state to join the Union after the original 13 (the first 2 being Vermont and Kentucky) I like that mock-up jersey with the stripes and the 3 stars. That would've been awesome to see. Gonna save it in my "obscure uniforms" folder
Gothamite
I like the color scheme, but that's a terrible logo for a football team.Help me out, Tennesseeans - what's the significance of the leaf? cranium
And, one of the creators wearing a mock-up of the planned jersey:I see those stars made it to the Titans logo. Do they have any special significance for Tennessee? That certainly would have been a different color scheme. I also like the sleeve stripes as a variant of the Northwestern stripes. I don't like the snake on a leaf logo. It makes the snake look like a worm. The league would have have come up with something more mean-looking than that.I suspect that this was a fan's mock up. Does anyone know if the NFL or team produced this jersey?
