Do You Think the World Baseball Classic should move to July?

I found a Yahoo! article suggesting that the World Baseball Classic should move to July.

WBC Story

Do You think MLB should have something similar to NHL's Olympic Break every 3-4 years?

It kills the rhythm of the season, and more importantly, baseball is already played six days out of seven during your average team week. As teams have been moving away from doubleheaders (and when they do play, they don't necesarilly give it their all in both games), it would be really hard to make up those games without pushing the season into early March or November (which is really iffy climate wise). In short..."No, this is a horrible idea."

[sarcasm] Because the Olympic break has worked so well for hockey. {/Sarcasm]

In short no. The Olympics have been a disaster for the the NHL. If the 2010 Olympic weren't in Vancouver the plug would have been pulled on it after 2002. Players got tired from the extra games in the middle of the season and it hurt the stretch run and playoffs. Just ask the Senators how they liked the Olympic break last year, they lost their goalie and their Cup chances at the Olympics.

If Baseball did this no one would want to play in it. With hockey it was the Olympics which is a big thing so players were willing to take the risk. If it was the World Cup of Hockey during the season (like what the World Baseball is) less players would go.

Leave it in spring training or even move it before spring training or after the World Series. That way if players do get hurt they have a month off before the season, or an whole off season to heal. I think MLB handled it fine last year with the pitch counts.

No way. July is prime baseball season. You've got the all-star break and when many pennant races begin to take shape. I like either where it is now, or jkrdevil said, after the World Series. Maybe through the month of November, or even Mid-November into December. It's mostly played in the warmer climate areas anyway (except the games in Japan, but isn't that in a dome?), so it wouldn't really change much, plus the previously mentioned additional rest/healing time from the end until Spring Training. But the Baseball season should never be interupted.

If the United States isn't going to win it then I say the whole thing should be permanently shelved.

:D

OK, jokes aside, I think it worked out just fine last year and if it is to continue then it should continue just as it did in 2006. Will the WBC continue to be played predominately in the USA in future years? It seems to me that the MLB players benefit from playing relatively close to their spring training bases (no pun intended), although it seems a bit unfair to most of the other competing nations, especially the defending champions, not to have an opportunity to host this event.

Yes the Event will be in the US. It's an MLB owned event, they are going to play the games in their venues.

the best option would be to keep the WBC where it currently is right now, because if it is pplaced in the Fall after the World Series because there is no way the WBC could compete with the NFL.

The way it is right now is just a modified Spring Training for select players.

I wouldn't mind doing it in July, except I think it would be too long and take up too much time. It was great during March last season. Competitive baseball during Spring Training was great to see. It might become better to as it becomes bigger. I can see players training and playing in winter leagues to help them get ready for it.

That groin was a ticking time bomb* to begin with...

*You may make jokes from there starting...Now.

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Wrong again jkr... have you forgotten about all those WBC games in Japan and Puerto Rico from 2006? Anyways, from what I've heard MLB wants to hold the 2009 finals in Asia.

I'd have the whole tournament there, just like the World Cup. Either play all of the games in Japan, or have a couple in China and Korea.

If they moved it to July, I think players not playing in the WBC would become a part of their MLB contractw with regularity.
