The 2007 MLS Season Thread

...because "Official" threads are verboten!

Early trends:

(1) The Red Bulls are unstoppable

(2) DC United sucks

(3) Toronto FC can't buy a goal...

(4) ...but should be able to after a few home games. What a crowd!

Thoughts?

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Watched the TFC-Wizards game this morning, and I have to say, it was pretty entertaining. Toronto looked better than in any other game so far this season, and they are way past due for a goal. But it was frustrating to watch sometimes as they tried to make that extra pass rather than take a shot.

I was at the TFC home opener today. They played very well, easily the best game they have played yet. It sucks that Mo Johnston is the coach, because he is useless.

The atmosphere in Toronto was amazing. When Eddie Johnson scored he had the bright idea to taunt the Toronto fans, and in return got pelted by beer cups, with a couple of them still having liquid in them :P

United loses to freaking Columbus a.k.a. the definition of mediocrity.

Toronto can't score against three traffic cones in their home opener.

Plus RBNY wins again.

And the galaxy win the superclasico.

ARGH! :cursing:

Toronto FC today traded Paulo Nagamura to the Chivas USA for a first-round draft pick.

I mention this in that it seems to be a continuation of whaat may become a bad trend for TFC. Apparently Nagamura was traded because he was unhappy playing in Toronto. This was also the reason I remember when Ronnie O'Brien was traded to Houston Dynamo, and apparently TFC had a deal in place for Guevara earlier in the week that was nixed for the same reason. I have to wonder if more and more good players are going to want to get out of Toronto.

In addition, John Ellinger was fired as coach of Real Salt Lake. His successor? Forward Jason Kreis, who retired in order to take the reins.* Here's to the best, Jason. You're going to need it.

*Way to let me know about that ahead of time, Jason. I'll remember to not pick you in next year's fantasy draft... <_<

I'm more of an internation soccer kind of guy (go Arsenal) and I'd probably watch MLS more if Red Bull New York didn't alienate me by calling themselves New York, but damn, they've gotten off to a really good start. Atop the Eastern Conference with Chicago, RBNY sure is tough to beat at home. They have Real Salt Lake up in Utah tomorrow. Other than expansion Toronto FC, RSL has the GD in MLS and the worst in the Western Conference at -6. Can't say for sure, but RBNY should hope for a tie at the very least tomorrow because RSL is 0-1-2 at home.

EDIT: For a second there, I thought you were making a Dallas Burn pun, Fred T. Jane. :D

Whee, Toronto FC scores a goal...and two more to boot! And in grand Canadian fashion, they confuse soccer with hockey and have a fight! (I kid, I kid)

There was a scuffle between a Toronto and Chicago player just before the half. They both got red-carded. The best part was when Toronto scored their first goal and people were throwing the promotional seat cushions onto the field.
