koizim
They might do a patch that day, but I doubt they'll go for the whole blinged-out uniform treatment. Mind you, this 'tradition' dates back to 2006, so I don't think that it's any kind of MLB-mandated rule. Besides, the Yanks are going to have a ton of pomp and circumstance at the Stadium that day to commemorate the championship. They're a team that doesn't go for patches or uniform changes to mark an event, but when it comes to pre-game ceremonies, the Yankees take the cake.except for stadium closings / openings...I'd say those are pretty major events considering they happen only once every 85 years . They'll also do something when a notable former player dies (they put the player's number on the sleeve of their jersey and also add a black band to the cuff) or when they host an All-Star Game, but in the grand scheme of things, the Yankees certainly do these sorts of additions less frequently than other teams. STL FANATIC
I believe this tradition actually dates back to 2004. And I believe every team has also worn a WS Champs patch since then, too.Now the Phils started to buck that trend some by removing it at some point through the season last year, but I believe every team has at least started the season with it. I could be wrong, though. JUSTIN STRIEBEL | PORTFOLIO | RESUME | CONTACT
M59
Do you celebrate when you've bought something...something you've bought many times before? Then why should the Yankee$? The most appropriate thing they could do is have the players come bursting onto the field in a surge of cash on Opening Day 2010.
BBTV
Dude, seriously. Your Yankee$ schtick was never funny, and now it's just annoying. koizim
Also, the two most critical parts of the Yankees this year came from the farm system: Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. The Yankees may buy their way there (but let's be honest here, not that much more so than any other team that utilizes free agency), but the key guys when it come to actually winning are almost always from within the organization. vsrg
I don't see the Yankees following the trend; They're an organization that like to set standards and set themselves apart, not do what everyone else is.I was under the impression the gold trim was an MLB mandate for the defending champions, so there may be little choice in the matter.I don't think so. The Red Sox wore them in 05 and 08 (though just for the pregame then). The Cards wore them in 07 and the Phils in 09, but in between the White Sox didn't wear them. Who knows, maybe MLB mocked it up and thought gold would look bad next to silver and axed it. It would have been pretty cool to see gold replace the silver on their jerseys, but I digress. I don't think the Yanks will wear any gold or commemerative patches. The White Sox/MLB did mock up jerseys with the gold for opening day 2006 (see photos below), but I am not sure why they didn't wear them. I don't hate the Yankees for spending their money and playing within the rules, but I do hate when their fans make statements like this. Nothing personal, but it's borderline absurd. Don't justify their style, just embrace it and be grateful that your team can do it. I'd love it if the Phillies could do what they do (not that I'm complaining about how they've spent lately, but having to give up Cliff Lee over $9M kind of sucks.) BBTV
That White Sox jersey isn't too bad. I wonder how they'd look if their logo or number was gold with black outline. I've always loved their style (home and away), but thought that their black and silver was really dull. Gold would be a nice change (though I think red would be better.) I'd love it if the Phillies could do what they do (not that I'm complaining about how they've spent lately, but having to give up Cliff Lee over $9M kind of sucks.)One of the biggest reasons he's reaching is that Rivera and Jeter make a boatload of money these days. Lots of teams can't (or won't, we'll drag back the other thread if we're really going to get into this) shell out the money to keep their homegrown players once they become stars, let alone fill in around them with other elite stars. If the Yankees had been powered by some first and second year players from their farm system making just above the minimum, the point might be valid. But pointing out a couple of success stories from 15 years ago who now mak All Star money? Not quite shoring up that argument IMO.I might be abusing my mod powers here, but let's make that the last thing about the Yankees and spending, and we want to further that discussion, someone pull up the thread from November. Thanks. JUSTIN STRIEBEL | PORTFOLIO | RESUME | CONTACT
BallWonk
And on the Yankees, this makes me think they'll wear gold, at least to some capacity, for something this year. Pre game, first few games, ect. Something like that. That is the first Yankees cap that has ever made me think, "I want one of those." I feel dirty now. Gotta go listen to my MP3 recordings of the 2004 ALCS or something. Anyway, I don't like the patch on the side -- I hate cap-side patches almost as much as I hate the Yankees themselves -- but the gold outline on that cap is perfect. I'd love it if every World Series champion would do something like that the season when it's the reigning champ. It's the kind of thing that would have to be different for every team -- gold outline on the cap logo vs. gold outline on the jersey script vs. gold piping on the jersey. But there's also more tradition to this than just the 2005 Red Sox. The Giants "World Champions" jerseys, for example, and also in 1951 the Philadelphia A's added a gold outline to their cap logo to mark the team's 50th anniversary. I prefer the gold treatment to the championship patch, since it's somehow both more subtle but also a little more in-your-face. As to the Giants if they won the Series, I would add a black outline to the cap logo, then put a gold drop shadow bottom right under that, just like the gold on the jersey script. BBTV
Here's an idea:Instead of cheesy gold trim on uniforms or hats, why don't the players all wear championship belt buckles? If a championship belt is good enough for boxers and wrestlers, then it's good enough for ballplayers. Bouj
I certainly hope they don't because the gold-trimmed uniform is a stupid idea and it's nice when someone stands up to MLB Properties and says, "This is a stupid idea, we're not wearing it." Waleslax
I found this picture of what the White Sox actually wore opening day 2006. You can see it is has a "World Series Champions" patch on the sleeve, but no gold. And my $0.02; not that I would advocate it, but if the Yankees did add a color, silver would look much better. Over the past few years I have always thought the special jersey/patch/whatever looks bad. Barry Sanders used to just hand the ref the ball after scoring a touchdown and once said something like "act like you've been there before and will be there again."
