Why do owners of major league soccer think amercan scccer fans want have their teams have international football nicknames like they do over in old country,it doesn't make sense to me have soccer team in america have european nickname when they can use tough sounding nicknames for their teams instead of euro-trash nick names they are using for their teams right now

What I'm least concerned about is 'the great loss of tradition'. 14 years, come on! That's nothing. European sports fans despise teams that are younger than 50 years. And the fans of those teams. "Hey, you are supporting a piece plastic! Come back when you have some traditions".

So basically, in a nutshell, fans of traditional soccer teams are Europe's answer to your average Finebaum Show caller talking about all non-SEC teams?

Sean Carter is 100% correct. Sporting KC? What a joke. Another reason to dislike the MLS

If that's a real reason to dislike MLS for you then you probably had no real interest in MLS or soccer in general to begin with.

Dear Mr. Negative:

So I have no interest in football you say?

Attended my first game in 1972 - St. Louis Stars v. New York Cosmos

Played the game well into my 40s

Worked as a consultant at Time Warner for the Cosmos 20th Anniversary game

Own shares in Arsenal.

Own shares in Juventus via parent company Exor SpA

So what was that you were saying? Just a thought but you may want to ask before you state. Now would you kinjdly remove your head from your behind? Thank you.

Now back to the "story" - Sporting KC.

What if . . .

Juventus was rebranded Juventus Racers (Exor has major stake in Fiat)?

Real Madrid was rebranded as the Madrid Royals?

See where I'm going with this?

The NASL isn't coming back.

I'm still saying this because you're dislike of MLS seems based on the fact that they aren't naming all of their teams after their NASL predecessors.

Yes, Kansas City Wizards was better then Sporting KC. Toronto FC, however, is better then the Toronto Blizzard and DC United is easily a better name then Washington Darts, Diplomats, or Whips. So take your angry "MLS IS TRYING TO BE TO EUROPEAN INSTEAD OF BEING LIKE THE NASL" ranting someplace else please.

Disliking a team because they are clinging closer to the European roots of the sport is ridiculous. If that is the case hate golf and American football. Disliking a team because they use a logo that is trying to be modern while historical looking is ridiculous. If that is the case hate baseball and American football. Complaining about what a professional sporting team is doing as if you know better is ridiculous. If that is the case, get a job with them and work them on changing things. Otherwise, you're simply spinning your wheels.

I personally hate baseball. I loathe it. But I don't pop into every baseball related story to complain about it. Why? Because its pointless and I have better things to do. The thing with me and baseball is: I've actually watched games and decided I don't like it. I've even been to a live game... still hate it. People that complain about MLS: I doubt very seriously that any of them has tried watching the sport. I'm not talking about just one or two games, I'm talking hundreds. I've probably sat through the agony of 100+ baseball games. Why? I thought I might have misunderstood something. Nope, it sucks. The folks complaining about MLS usually (almost guaranteed) don't watch it, haven't tried it, or haven't watched more than a handful of games.

Just had to get that off my chest.

Oh, and I love the rebranding. The logo looks awesome.

A great editorial was posted at MLSRumors that answers this for you:

Um Folks,

I don't hate the MLS. I grew up in a different era. I truly dislike the old "how we gonna make the product better? Ah, Let's be like Europe!" Ugh. Build your own identity.

Um, the neither the NASL nor MLS have "European roots" as is suggested here. That's like saying you can take the lineage of the London Monarchs back to Decatur Stayleys. The game is universal; the teams owned by North Americans play in North America stadia. They are NORTH AMERICAN. When the Cosmos come back, I want them to be the New York Cosmos, not Cosmos New York, not Cosmos Sporting or FC Cosmos or Cosmos FC.

The Frankfurt Galaxy learned this lesson rather early. Instead of being like the NFL, they carved out their own identity with their own customs. They were successful.

Granted some of the old NASL names were bad. The Oakland Stompers? (Yeah, I get it, wine country). However, there were some very good nicknames. I loved the Boston Minutemen logo. Philly Atoms were very cool. Los Angeles Aztecs was a good name too. Atlanta Apollos? Not so much. Toronto Metros-Croatia? Um, no.

At least when it came to naming teams in the WLAF/NFL E sphere, NFL Properties did its homework. All the names, like them or not, Sea Devils, Centurions, Admirals, Miners (the Ruhr Valley Miners a team that never was), were relevant. The only teams you could argue weren't were the Fire and the Galaxy.

Please, MLS, stop the Euro-wanna be nonsense.

Names are not that big of an issue (sure some are lame but we find that in all sports leagues around the world), real soccer fans look for quality and a team near them, not primarily for which team has the best name. Oh by the way "International/Euro" sounding names have been a part of the American Football/Soccer scene for well over a hundred years. Some of the early names of clubs, were Todd Shipyard of Brooklyn, New York FC, Falco FC of Holyoke (MA), and JP Coats of Pawtucket (RI).

See Link

American Soccer History Timeline

The official name of the New York Giants of the NFL,is the New York Football Giants, Inc. I suppose the NFL is a euro-trash league as well...

I hardly think its going to go away. The "euro-trash" bashers are just going to have to get used to it. MLS is starting to take hold, and a lot of it has to do with a fan base that mimics and borrows european and south american fans. Names are a small part of it, but cant be overlooked. The uproar over "european" nicknames(actually not nicknames)is about as legitimate as calling health reform socialism. Its a myopic, xenophobic view of sports. Wear your New England Teamen shirts with pride, watch indoor soccer and let the MLS fans be.

You realize that the MLS failed miserably when they tried to do soccer "American style" right? They almost went under. Since emulating the way its done in Europe MLS has fended off imminent collapse and successfully carved itself a small but stable niche in the North American market place.

As for your beloved NASL? Well they aren't around anymore are they? That's enough to tell me that their way of doing things wasn't the right way.

Should every team have a European name? No. This Kansas City re-brand is evidence enough of that.

A team having a Euro-style name isn't a bad thing in and of itself, however. In fact it's proven to be successful in many places where it's been tried.

Build your own identity.

I find it funny that you keep telling MLS to build its own identity, yet you clamour for the return of the New York Cosmos. The New York Red Bulls are MLS' New York team. If they're going to build their own identity then it's the Red Bulls brand they have to build. Bringing back the Cosmos wouldn't be be building their own identity, it would be embracing part of the identity of an old, failed league.

I think you might want to look again before you direct this comment at me.

I believe Red Wolf said what your so upset about. I agreed with him, and quite frankly, I don't care if you want to direct the comments you made at me, but I'm not here to fight. I agreed with an opinion and I'm entitled to do so with the information I had.

To boot "in my travels" as they say I've met so many people who are quick to put MLS down because it isn't European football. It pisses me off, A) as a TFC season ticket holder, B) as a person who's played the game since the age of 4 and, C) as someone who watches the EPL/Eredivse/MLS and the local division 3 soccer on a regular basis. They're all different styles. Doesn't make one necessarily better than the other.

But your entitled to your opinion too. Even if you think it's my head up my ass.
