Best/Worst Uniforms

On the worst logo in sports thread, there were some teams with good uniforms and bad logos that I could not do. Therefore, I start this unform thread.

Again I steal Brian in Boston'ss format.

First, I'll say that I am leaving out all Native American logos such as Chief Wahoo because I am one of those wacky people that finds them degrading. I would have them last place in all cases, but I'd like to criticize other logos instead.

Second, I am using best/worst uniforms since 1980 (about my sports-watching memory), so many are no longer used.

MLB Top Three

1) Yankees - Hate the team, love the uni.

2) Red Sox - Classic home jersey and cap

3) Cubs - Classic home jersey and capp.

MLB Bottom Three (excluding Atlanta and Cleveland)

3rdWorst) MOntreal Expos (1980s) - I liked some powder blue, but I had to include one. So I chose the one with the silly three-colored cap.

2nd Worst) Original D'Rays - How many colors did they have?

Worst) Current Padres Road - I cannot even look at it.

NBATop Three (there were four I wanted to include here)

1) Miami Heat (orignial)- I love the colors, the flame on the "T" and the logo. I don't like the updated uniform quite as much as the original.

2) San Antonio Spurs- Simple word "Spurs" with the spur "U". Love it.

3) Minnesota Timberwolves (original) - I like the current logo, but not the font on the uni. The old uni had the great blue and green color and original logo on the shorts. Simple, but I liked it.

4) Milwaukee Bucks (1980s) - Multiple shades of green. Lovely

NBA Bottom Three

3rdWorst) Cleveland (before current) - I think they made a modification, but this uni originally had a blue streak going across. Yuck.

2ndWorst) Houston Rockets (late 90s/early 2000s) Logos on the front of jerseys. Yuck. Those were just tacky.

Worst) Toronto Raptors (original) - A big dinosaur on the front. Nuff said.

NFL Top Three

1) Cincy Bengals (orignial tiger-stripes) - Unique, great helmet (glad they are keepting), and tremendous jersey. Love the orange and black.

2) Colts - Blue and White. I love the jerseys. Helmets are solid too.

3) Tampa Bay Bucs (old School) - I know I am in the minority, but I loved these. Particularly the helmet, but also the jersey. They did well with their overhall, but I miss the old orange uniforms.

NFL Bottom Three (excluding Washington and KC)

3rd Last) Buffalo Bills - They were doing fine with what they had. Now have too many colors and those blue shoulders on the whites.

2nd Last) Atlanta Falcons (current) - Three toned sleeves and that stupid revamped helmet logo. Yuck.

Last) Cincy Bengals (current)- Traded in some of the league's best uniforms for uniforms that were likely designed by the University of Oregon.

NHL Top Three

1) Devils Green and Red - Why, oh why, did they ditch such unique unis in favor of such overused colors?

2) MN North Stars (N/Star logo) - I loved the North Stars and I loved these uniforms.

3) Toronto Maple Leafs-Simple but great.

NHL Bottom Three (excluding Chicago and third jerseys)

third worst) Anaheim Mighty Ducks (past and present)-Hate the colors and the striping. Decent logo, but all down hill from there.

Next worst) Atlanta Thrashers - I hate both logos.

Worst) Phoenix old Unis - Too many colors for an identity. Much improved now.

NHL Best 3:

1.Chicago. No one is even close.

2.Montreal. From Morenz, to Richard, to Beliveau, to Lafleur, to Carbonneau, to now.

3.Minnesota. Everything except the third. The best of modern uniform design.

Honourable mentions: Philly, Detroit and the Vancouver "Spaghetti plate skate"

NHL Worst 3:

28. Tampa. Not traditional enough to be boring, not new enough to be exciting.

29. Hartford. Everybody gets all pissy about dissing the former WHA teams, but the green ones SUCKED HARD.

30.Atlanta. Ick. Two ugly ones, one that's not as ugly, but looks like a different jersey half the time on TV. And it has a TIE UP!

Dishonourable mentions: San Jose, New York Rangers, Anahiem

MLB Best 3:

1. Boston. Especially without the names.

2.St. Louis. Just beautiful.

3.Minnesota. Nice and simple, with the TC thing on the sleeve.

MLB Worst 3:

28.Pittsburgh. Not a fan of the sleeveless

29.Arizona. Horrible colours.

30.Oakland. Yellow and green. Yuck.

CFL Best 3:

1.Ottawa. Cool numbers.

2.Montreal. Unique

3.Calgary. Red and white works with black......

CFL Worst 3:

7.Saskatchewan. .....But not so well with green and silver.

8.Edmonton. Yellow pants. Enough said.

9.Hamilton. Horrible numbers and pants.

NFL Best 3:

1.Denver. Sweetness.

2.Oakland. <Fiddler on the roof>TRADITION!</Fiddler on the roof>

3.Seattle. Brave, daring, and really cool looking.

NFL Worst 3:

30.Cleveland. I never liked the helmets....

31. San Diego. It's really sad to say powder blue makes it look better.

32. Jacksonville. A big black/teal/gold mess.

NHL Best: Atlanta. Awesome Secondary logo and jersey, killer third jersey, especially the color.

MLB Best - Braves - terriffic mascot, the most honorable think a Native American could be right after chief. A brave was their best warrior, their most honored members. A wonderful way for the sporting world to honor the ones who were in this land before us. And Terriffic jerseys. I love the classic, simple design. I'd like to see the navy batting jerseys replace the greys, but overall a terriffci package.

NFL Best - I don't care for the team, but the 49ers have a great look. I generally dont like red, but their slightly scarlet color looks great witht he gold.. very simple clean unis, and a gold helmet is always my favorite.

NHL Worst - Holy cow the old Columbus BlowJackets looked terrible. The new logo helps, and fixes their terrible Fisher-Price look logo, and awful primary school colors. So, mow the worst goes to the Florida Panthers. Awful. Red, Yellow, and Blue are a terrible color combo. Change to maroon, navy, and gold, and you've got a winner, but primary colors should be used one at a time.

MLB Worst - The devil rays look pretty bad, but the Marlin's teal is gawd awful too. Hmm.. the vest look is my least favorite trend, and I always despise anything about the Yankees..... but, i think I have to go with the Diamondbacks. A newer team with pinstripes? Bad idea... and the colors? -shiver- Two colors that should not be used in (mens) sports, teal and purple. Hey! Lets use them both. Awful, just awful.

NFL Worst - They used to be bad boys, but now they are just bad. Maybe makign their uniforms less than the single most boring unis in all of sports could help. The Radiers need SOMETHING done to their unis. The shield emblem is kinda cool, but as a second logo, not ont he helmet. Black jersey, silver numbers. Are you DONE? do SOMETHING else!

MLB Top Three Unis

1. New York Yankees-The Pinstripes Need I say more

2. St. Louis Cardinals-Classic birds on a bat, too bad the road uni dose not say St> Louis if it did it wuld be #1

3. Atlanta Braves-The tomahawk look is a true clasic as the Braves uniforms since 1987 hit perfection and should be untouchable like other classic unis.

MLB Bottom Three Unis

28. Arizona Diamonbacks-Som many unis none of them are good.

29. Toronto Blue Jays-Their old uniforms were perfect these just fail on so many levels.

30. San Diego Padres-The font on the road uni looks terrible and the color is terrible.

NBA Top Three Unis

1. Boston Celtics-A true classic simple and dignified

2. New York Knicks-Another classic and simple look

3. San Antonio Spurs-Clean looks work in basketball and teh Spurs is another example

NBA Bottom Three Unis

28. Denver Nuggets- They look like silk pajamas.

29. Phoenix Suns-The grey looks terrible on the uni and the font has no style

30. Toronto Raptors-Two tone unis

NFL Top Three Unis

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Great colors that blend well together

2. New York Jets-A great look and brings images of Broadway Joe

3. Kansas City Chiefs-Another classic look

NFL Bottom Three unis

30. Detroit Lions-The Black has really made these unis look ugly.

31. New England Patriots-Suilver jerseys must go all of them.

32. Buffalo Bills-The home jersey is just a complete eyesore

NHL Top Three Unis

1. New Jersey Devils-A great logo and a simple uniform with colors taht belnd well

2. Detroit Red Wings-SImple and dignified the same one worn by Gordie Howe.

3. Colorado Avalanche-A good color scheme and striping that fits the logo well.

NHL Bottom Three Unis

28. Atlanta Thrashers- All 3 unis are bqad with each oen getting worse

29. Nashville Predators- Ugly does notr begin to describe these wretched looking unis

1) Cubs - Classic. Blue, Red and White.

2) Mets - My fave Team. Blue and Orange.

1) Royals - why add black???? How bout some blue roadies?

2) Athletics - Yellow and Green. YUCK.

3) DBacks - A Mess. Remeber when they had like 14 diffrent combos.

NBA Best:

1) Bulls - Perfection on the hardwood.

2) Pistons - Classic colors with modern cut.

3) Sixers - Love the black. They need to have a red alternate.

NBA Worst:

1) Bucks - remember the deer head alternate? Too much purple on those unis.

2) Jazz - Rocky Mountain Sick.

3) Orlando - too plain. They need to go back to the original uni's.

NFL Best:

1) Jets - Retro look that looks good on the present.

2) Colts - Blue and White. nothing more nothing less.

3) Raiders - Just look good baby.

NFL Worst:

1) Bills - NFL Europe worthy.

2) Seahawks - is it green or is it blue? please white pants on home games.

3) Lions - why black???? why couldn't you dress down and used the retro unis?

NHL Best:

1) Red Wings - Red and White. Love the logo.

2) Rangers - Classy. Simple. and love the alts.

3) Flames - love the flaming horse unis. actually all of them.

NHL Worst:

1) Stars - MOOterus anyone?

2) Coyotes - 0 for 2 on their unis history.

3) Capitals - can u at least have the road and home unis match?

NBA Top 3:

1. New York Knicks - I'm a bigger fan of the uniforms of the mid-late 90s (home being the white/blue/orange with the stripe down the shorts only, and the road as the blue with black/orange sides), but it's still a classic... and the overall look hasn't changed much.

2. Cleveland Cavaliers - Just a sick upgrade

3. Indiana Pacers (minus the alt) - As much as I hate them, the Pacers have one of the best and classiest looks in basketball.

Honorable mentions - Denver Nuggets, Dallas Mavericks, Detroit Pistons

NBA Bottom 3:

28. Milwaukee Bucks - Green, purple, deer in headlights. Crap.

29. Toronto Raptors - Just wrong. Their red/black uniforms are excellent, but their 2 primaries are just horrible. I personally liked their cartoon raptor jerseys better than their current crapola.

30. New Orleans Hornets - Their look in Charlotte was fine, the move to teal/purple/yellow as well as keeping their jersey collar thick and eliminating the shoulders is just... disgusting. Atrocious.

1) Jazz - designed by 8th graders.

2) Timberwolves - created by 8th graders, but then designed by professionals

3) TIE Pacers - previous look was miles better. pinstripes don't work in basketball.

3) TIE Nets - silly, cartoonish.

3) TIE Wizards - their whole identity is a joke. bullets was such a cool name.

NFL Best:

1) 49ers - the best modernizing update ever.

2) Steelers -timeless classics. the look of a champion, and I'm no Steelers fan

3) (recently vacated by Bengals), so I'll go with Texans - it's so rare for an expansion team to get it completely right on the first try.

NFL Worst:

1) Bills - possibly the worst in all of sports

2) Titans - "hey, look, they're superheroes!"

3) Ravens - I hate everything about these

4) Jaguars - these aren't aging well. They say "hi, we started in 1995".

NHL Best:

1) Blackhawks - great logo, great uni's

2) Red Wings - simple and beautiful.

3) Flyers (orange) - I don't know why, but I've always loved these.

NHL Worst:

1) Mighty Ducks - until they get rid of that ridiculous logo, they are the worst.

2) Lightning - bad logo, boring colors.

3) Canucks - there's a reason this board sees so many Canucks concepts.

NHL BEST:

1) Blues - it's somewhere between classic and modern. A great look.

2) Wild - Dumb name; great uniform.

3) Flames - Even with the black C on the home sweaters and Flaming Snot, these have been great to watch in action.

NHL WORST:

1) The hodge-podge crap-o-rama that is the Thrashers' 3rd.

2) Tie: The Isles' and the Flyers' 3rds.

3) Tie: The Senators and the Capitals -- inconsistency doesn't work in hockey.

NFL BEST:

1) Bears - Classic.

2) Chiefs - They haven't changed in years, and they don't need to.

3) Texans - Amazing... an expansion team with a decent uni.

NFL WORST:

1) Bills white jerseys. Ditch the blue shoulders, and you might just have something.

2) Jaguars. Five different kinds of crap.

3) Seahawks all-blue ensemble - manages to look gray AND blend in with the field at the same time.

MLB BEST:

1) Yankees. Love 'em or loathe 'em, these pinstripes rule.

2) Dodgers. The anti-pinstripe club.

3) Pirates. The only team that really makes the vest look work.

MLB WORST:

1) Padres road unis. What more can be said?

2) The not-so-blue-Jays. I really don't like the graphite. They look so plain now. The old hats were at least distinctive, in a way.

3) Mets in black. They might be okay if they didn't wear them ALL THE FRICKIN' TIME. Give it up already.

NBA BEST: (Slim pickins' here--the NBA is full of bad unis)

1) Celtics. Clean, bold, classic.

2) Pistons. Combining old-school with new-school and doin' it right.

3) Cavaliers. A welcome turnaround from the goofy stuff they had before.

NBA WORST: (so hard to narrow it down)

1) Rockets. Have the Rockets ever had good unis? I don't think they have...

2) Raptors. The name is bad enough, but what is up with that two-tone look?

3) Lakers white jersey. Totally unnecessary.

And, as a treat---

MLS BEST:

1) United. It'll be a shame if adidas ever stops making their shirts.

2) LA Galaxy. I like the green and gold sash... It establishes an individual look for them. Gets away from the Team Nike look.

3) MetroStars. They look a little like AC Milan now. It's kinda cool, actually.

MLS WORST:

1) The Columbus Crew. The dumbest name in MLS, and it's plastered right on the front of their shirts.

2) Earthquakes: bland. Much better than the first Clash shirts, though...

3) KC Wizards. meh.

NBA Worst:

1) Bucks - remember the deer head alternate? Too much purple on those unis.

The alternate you're referring to was green and IMO, it was a whole lot better than their regular roadies. Of course that's in the same sense as the Kentucky Colonels logo being a whole lot better than the rest of the ABA.

But at least they looked like the Bucks in those alts. Not some D-League team owned by Barney & Friends...

In no real order, only current uniforms.

NHL Best:

Saint Louis(Home) The road is nice, but on that one the shoulders are light blue with dark blue sleeve ends and hem. Make the shoulders dark blue to match the pattern on the sleeves/hem and you've got a great set. Or you could make everything light blue to match the sleeves/hem which would make sense considering the predominant color of the home is light blue and, IMO, the amount of one color should be directly proportional to the main color of the dark uni.

Minnesota(Road) The home has too much green but there is nothing they could do that would improve it. The road, however, is great. Dumb name, nice logo, great unis.

Chicago(Road) Again, I don't really like the home(namely because of the sleeves), but the road is fantastic.

NHL Worst:

Montreal(Road) Usually the white jersey looks better than the colored one, but this white jersey is crap. Why don't they use this years "Heritage/Vintage" white jersey? Then the home and road would match. As it is, the road jersey looks like it could be accompanied by the phrase "My first concept". This jersey gets the nod for worst over other craptacular designs like Nashville because of it's extreme inconsistancy with the home jersey. Washington and Ottawa, too, have this problem, but Montreal's road is worse(by far) than either of the Washington or Ottawa's unis. This uniform is also the worst because it's for such a classic club like the Canadiens, yet it looks like a mens league team with no budget.

Nashville(all three) What's there to say about Nashville's uniforms. All three are terrible. Overall, worst set in the league. I've still gotta give Montreal's road the worst single uniform, though.

Atlanta(alternate) I really like the road jersey, but the home isn't so good and the third is cornea burning quality bad. First, you've got the whole one sleeve thing. If it were on both, but wouldn't look so bad. Second, there's a dropshadow on the 'ATLANTA' text. Third, holes on the jersey are HUGE. Usually they look like little pinpricks in the material, but these look like football practice jersey holes. Fourth, it's got contrasting color side vents. Fifth, it looks like it's made of denim . A color not meant for, well, anything. Sixth, it's got a tie up. What's with tie ups on non classical designs like NYI's 3rd and this one. This jersey barely beat out Mooterus and Vancouver's alt for this list.

I know the NHL the best, so I'll leave the other three outta this. Though the Braves and Brewers have amazing sets so they would get top nods from me.

Wow Sabres--the Habs' white jersey is a classic I love it and the red one too--

who cares if the shoulders are different--it's been that way for a long time--and white shoulders on the red jersey look horrible so do no red shoulders on the white--and I've seen both--

Note: This does violate the porportional color thing I mentioned earlier, but because the logo is mostly red, putting it on a red stripe would look wierd. The Canadiens wore this decades ago, why did they ever switch?

yeah, that is a problem. The numbers would be more legible I think if they were red trimmed in white, trimmed in blue. Double outline. Then you might do something similar for the homes like white trimmed in red trimmed in blue, but that might make it less legible.
