At the time I understood, if not outright supported the extension simply because "devil you know/devil you don't"-type arguments convinced me in my own mind that you could make it work.  Obviously it was one of a collage of mis-evaluations with Cutler, but personally I feel like the last straw was hiring John Fox over Adam Gase.  I think with Gase you probably could've transformed the culture and made Cutler work for another couple years (or until his body failed, whichever would come first) and had a guy who age-wise and philosophically matched Pace better.  Instead they have this old thorn bush coaching seemingly in spite of his GM at times.

Yeah, it's a whole chain of terrible decisions. Emery shouldn't have given Cutler the extension, but the McCaskeys, who are supposed to be notoriously cheap, should have been cheap and vetoed the extension. Then they fired Emery in large part for giving Cutler that extension, which they technically could have prevented him from doing and even parted ways with him if it had to come to that, but without the giant Cutler money on the books. Then comes the Fox/Pace/Gase stuff you mentioned. It's like every successive decision was the wrong one. It's hard to dig yourself too deep a hole in the NFL because of roster turnover and small sample size and all that, but the Bears are like "dig up, stupid" anyway. I don't know how fans can stick with this team. No NFL team does less with more. A good handful of teams do do less, but they're not the goddamn Chicago Bears. (EDIT: The Redskins come quite close, but they've been a little better than the Bears have, and I think most Redskins agony is signal-boosted by being in the Northeast Corridor and having an ethnic slur for a nickname.)

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I often find myself being simultaneously a fan and an anti-fan, I suppose  I don't think I'll ever walk away from them, like a battered spouse, but to say I support them would be a stretch.  I can't really be a true fan because they get it wrong 80% of the time (in regards to every decision) and over the last 6 years or so have truly become one of the NFL's most banal & incompetent franchises, yet I keep giving them a pretty solid chunk of my autumn/winter.  Ah well.  I guess I chose poorly.

Replace six with seventeen and you have me and the Bills.

And the Patriots have acquired Brandon Cooks and a 4th (118th overall pick) from the Saints in exchange for the Pats first (32nd overall) and third round (103) picks.

Wow. This is a very unorthodox move for the Patriots. Belichick must really see something he likes with Cooks.

Ravens cut Lardarius Webb today thanks to the signing of Tony Jefferson. The Danny Woodhead signing also looks smart now that Kenneth Dixon's been suspended for PEDs...

Also loving the resigning of Brandon Williams! :woot:

Cooks is going to be the next Jerry Rice. I saw the guy play live in college and had pretty high hopes for him with the Saints. He's quick, explosive, has good hands, and is a great route runner. Now that he's been stroked by the hand of God he'll end up being a Hall of Famer.

Not necessarily.

The Patriots have until May 2 to pick up Cook's fifth year option, which they should.

But they picked up the fifth year option on both Chandler Jones and Dont'a Hightower, only to deal Jones before he hit free agency and let Hightower go this week.

Hightower probably has the typical Bill Belichick approach of "go out and see what you can get and then come back to us." It's been done before in New England.

In addition to those I named earlier, for every good decision to not retain cut/trade a player like:

Richard Seymour

Lawyer Malloy

Deion Branch

Drew Bledsoe

Willie McGinest

Wes Welker

NE has mistakes like:

Curtis Martin

Asante Samuel

Adam Vinatieri

Ty Law

Then, there's that whole Aaron Hernandez thing along side the Christian Peter thing.  They still love the open box discount regardless of how the box was damaged. Bill also loves drafting Florida Gators including Chad Jackson

Well, I'm mostly kidding because of the New England diamond in the rough thing, but I do like Cooks a LOT. He was one of those players who really stood out to me after seeing him live. I think that's an amazing pickup, and I'm kinda pissed he's a Pat now.

Next Jerry Rice to mostly kidding.

Which one as you saw Cooks while you were in college?

You broke chairs during that time too.

Jerry Jones' shoddy construction broke chairs. I just provided the foot.

Good. God.

The Patriots are practically sucking the fun out of the AFC and we aren't even to the draft yet.

Seriously, this reminds me of what Lights Out said in the NFL Playoffs Thread:

Quote

the Pats have $67 million in cap space after this season. They're going to roll the Falcons and then go buy themselves a repeat in the offseason.

The Patriots hardly outbid and/or outspend other teams in free agency, though.  Now maybe they'll spend a little more to try and get a ring or two more before Brady retires, but that hasn't been their M.O. since Belichick took the helm.  Their deal is to acquire draft picks, pick out guys that fit their mold after free agency slows down, and get rid of guys a year before their performance dips and/or they become UFA's.

People are seriously pissed at NE? Really? It was the :censored:ing 32nd pick in the draft. That means literally every team besides dummy Minnesota could have had him.

Even a top 2nd rounder may have gotten it done if a few days ago. Quit with this juvenile jealousy over NE. Your team just didn't want him as much.

I wouldn't call those cuts/releases "mistakes." It's not like Ty Law left New England and set the world on fire in New York, Kansas City, and Denver. As for Samuel, sure he was a playmaker with some great hands (Super Bowl notwithstanding) but he wasn't physical nor effective in all areas of the field. He was pretty one dimensional.  Curtis Martin was also released in 1997, well before Bill Belichick really got a hold of the team. As for Vinatieri, he's a kicker. So meh.
