Wandell
Those were some of the ugliest facemask ever! I remember Greg Lloyd used one forever.
Wandell
But I still like it better than linemen wearing smaller, "skill position" facemasks.

I remember some NFL players using this one, but I wonder why this mask was used primarily in the World League? I had a middle bar when I started playing football in midgets. I thought someone from the Patriots also wore this plastic mask at one time. I was always a fan of the "bull ring" and covered neck pads. I always thought that was a great linebacker look. B. And 6 in Little League. Six is also my lucky number. But as a short lived right guard and long time DE, l always had the vertical bar and never noticed it. Mingjai
There's also the QB version of the single verticle bar going well below the chin that disappeared in the 1990s (warning: lots of pictures): Jim McMahon (as far as I can tell, he only wore a different variant with the Eagles) Dan Marino (he also wore at least two variants of this style): Steve Young (who switched to the more standard QB mask in the mid 90s): Visit my store on REDBUBBLE

joey joe joe jr. shabadoo
Back when it was more open season on QB's and they really took hits, you'd see these facemasks since the jaw was a target. Once the league started coddling QB's they felt more comfortable going to the smaller facemasks
joey joe joe jr. shabadoo
Always like the old Mark Duper facemask. He was the last player (that wasn't a K or P) to wear this styler
Kenmtb
Glad to run into this thread!!! I have been cringing at the new wave of conformity that grips the NFL. Yes those STUPID skill position masks. I reckon that peer pressure and the trend to go with less equipment drives men away from proper protection. Now every linebacker and every tight end looks as menacing a QB This is how a real LB looks!................................................................UM not! Lenny Dykstra
Can't find a photo, but Michigan's center wore the Lawrence Taylor style bird-cage with the vertical bar. Hadn't seen that in a while. It was in the Penn State game

I can't find anything about the nfl explicitly banning them like the single bars
Kenmtb
Most likely no manufacturer makes that kind of mask anymore so they are technically "extinct"

Wandell
Namath was the first quarterback to use this style mask, due to an injury. I read he later switched to the old version of it so he could move his head side to side easier.

I now return y'all to your current discussion on facemasks... *Disclaimer: I am not an authoritative expert on stuff...I just do a lot of reading and research and keep in close connect with a bunch of people who are authoritative experts on stuff. || dribbble || Behance ||
