Still MIGHTY
Wow, turns out that Thornton/Marleau package deal was a wrong thought, eh? Marleau to the Leafs for 3 years, $6.25M per. That is... bad. | ANA | LAA | LAR | LAL | ASU | CSULB | USMNT | USWNT | LAFC | OCSC | MAN UTD |
Cosmic
I just feel bad that Marleau is going to get a degenerative back condition in two years. Poor guy.

It's just surprising that he chose an eastern team. Though I'm glad he stayed away from LA/Ana and yes, of course, I wanted him to retire a Shark, that's still possible, but at the same time it's a business and he's never been a free agent before, so it was probably exciting. Sad to see him go, but hope he succeeds in Toronto, just no Sharks-Maple Leafs Stanley Cup Finals until he retires, please. (yes, I did just utter that sentence. Yes I know, I laughed too, kind of...) I know it's been reported by multiple sources, but until the Sharks announce it via their website and/or Twitter, I'm still not convinced Thornton has signed and still could decide to go anywhere, say Toronto. I know they were one of many teams inquiring about him. I still believe he wants to play with Marleau, but Thornton was pretty adamant about (more than Patty) not wanting to leave San Jose. Of course, the Sharks could just be waiting for Marleau to decide/sign with Toronto before announcing the return of Thornton, which is reports of Thornton signing in San Jose are true, that this is probably what's happening. FiddySicks
Why in the world would they even try to bring back Thornton? This was the PERFECT opportunity to ditch them both and finally move on. Im not sad Marleau left. He did enough for the Sharks, and the expiration date on that one is WELL since passed. They couldve had a clean break from that era, and instead they're going to bring back a guy who's had a pretty disappointing history with the Sharks, and who's career could potentially already be over due to last seasons injury. This limiting mindset has killed the Montreal Canadiens. And signing any goalie age 27+ to an 8-year contract... you're just asking for something to happen. 2010 Jaroslav Halak, the playoff hero was dealt so quickly for a 2nd liner and an additional box of pucks. They wanted Carey. Carey Price is their hand-picked "chosen one", even if he regularly gets outperformed and never once cranked those gears up to that upper echelon in the playoffs. It's no doubt to me that their affinity for Carey Price has to with more than statistics. Placing him on this high pedastal isn't good for Price because it brings incentive for criticism that shouldn't have to be there. He doesn't deserve to be labeled with the #overrated hashtag. He's capable of doing his part...when he's on his best game. But he gets pummeled quickly enough. I just hate when our players are being presented to us fans beyond or below their actual value for political reasons. These crappy old ways of doing business need to go. Cosmic
I think I almost get it for the Leafs. You can't pay everyone what they're worth; you need people to outperform their contracts, and they have that in spades right now with Matthews/Marner/Nylander. OK, so do what you can to load up quickly. Sounds good, but the third year of the Marleau deal will probably not look too good when they have to re-sign Marner and Matthews that off-season. I guess that's the price of doing business. Maybe they can get him to agree to a trade that year (of course he has a NMC again).

This was the perfect opportunity to reset the franchise, but no. The team screws it up by keeping the one veteran who was hard-headed enough to play with a shredded knee. It's an appropriately stupid move for a stupid franchise. Sometimes, I wish ICS resurfaced to have a freakout about these things. We could finally see what years worth of roadkill meat consumption will do to a (already unstable) human mind. Dumb. I mean, I can see that playoff results haven't been great, but the guy has scored over a point per game for over 900 games in San Jose. Disappointing seems like an overstatement. He's one of the best players of his generation. One year doesn't seem like a big deal. The $ are a bit much but it's not like there's much left on the FA market and the deal doesn't hurt you long term.
The_Admiral
Joe Thornton is a sneaky-dirty player who has particularly had it out for Jonathan Toews over the years, at one point concussing him and making him miss most of 2012, but he's a big gawky oaf on a team whose fans are good at posting, so it pretty much gets overlooked. I hope he gets his headphone cords caught in his skate laces and tries to stand up. Even without such a pratfall, I'll always be happy to watch such a tall man repeatedly come up short. Oh and the Marleau deal's pretty dumb too but there's no ill will to be had for Patrick Marleau. ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Tough spots for Montreal this summer. You can't give Radulov that deal, but there's no way his production will be replaced by Hemsky and Drouin. Same with Price, that's a very long and expensive deal for an already 30 year old goalie who has collected some injuries. But what are you going to do? Someone is going to give him that contract and when you've seen what he means to your team, you gotta do it. Lots st of these contracts including significant 2020-21 signing bonus money. The next stoppage is going to be a strike.
