DMadSport
Hey, take a look at this morning's Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel article article on the Gold unveiling. Scroll down a little bit and you'll see the new "Gold" mascot. Actually, it's a link to a message board on "Mascot Suggestions." The recommendations range from "Michael Johnson," "SpongeBob SquarePants," and a "Jumpin' Jezzie" (it's a Jesuit school, after all) to an appropriate "huge, gold Chicken" and this comment:A brick of gold with arms sticking out. I guess I can't think of anything without laughingMy thoughts exactly. The nickname is absolutely stupid. As for the MU logo, it does look pretty good... however, the more I look at it, the more I think the university decided on the insignia long before deciding on the nickname. I have the feeling the logo will stay, but the Gold nickname will be dropped because the negative reaction is so deafening.

pastajoe
Maybe the mascot should be that guy from Seinfeld, Kenny Banyon. "That's gold Jerry, GOLD!" They could have gone with The Popes to show everyone, especially Native Americans, that Catholics don't mind using their leaders as mascots. rmackman
The Gold? What the heck? I guess they couldn't be the Golds with an "s" b/c then everyone would think the whole team is iether Jewish or relatives of Tracy Gold from Growing Pains. How about the Marquette Kopp's Custards! They play on the same court as the Bucks, so why not go with a similar theme? The Marquette Road Kill! The article says they asked alumni and that they liked the idea? What'd they do go to a nursing home? OKAY IF YOU LIKE THE NAME GOLD, MAKE YOUR LIFE SUPPORT SYSTEM BEEP TWICE! OKAY THEY LIKE IT! "Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be eaten. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you'd better be running." - Unknown | Check out my articles on jerseys at Bacon Sports
Gothamite
Very rare that the Journal's graphics department scores a hit like this one: Even better, there was a photog on the ball enough to shoot a group of students watching the press conference on television. Students react after Marquette announces it is changing its nickname to Marquette 'Gold.'Ah, look at those kids. My people. The Green Bay Packers Uniform Database! Now in a handy blog. rtrich11
This from the Marquette article:For the board, the new name is being promoted as a blend of the new and old athletic traditions at Marquette. Those traditions include the old Golden Avalanche nickname, the Golden Eagles and the Gold Rush, the name of the student section at the Bradley Center during men's basketball games. What the heck is a Golden Avalanche? Did it happen after Tulsa's Golden Hurricane?Lost Limey, did you have to get that cheesy Spandau Ballet song stuck in my head? cafepress.com/artbyrichards

rockchalk
From the survey: In the survey, the terms respondents most often used to describe the Golden Eagles nickname are boring (57 percent), weak (55 percent) and common (52 percent). What the hell do they think Gold is gonna score on this?!?!?!?!?BTW, that picture is awesome I've decided to give up hope for all sports teams I follow
Sterling84
Ooops. Spelled his name wrong. Billy Wirth is an actor, but in 1989 he appeared on ( I think) the original American Gladiators. Back when it was an actual tournament. He was small but feisty and everyone was rooting for him.Link on IMDb The Official Cheese-Filled Snack of NASCAR

Sounds like an inunnedo gone wrong.Seriously, this is wrong. Gold is a color, not a nickname. Sheesh...Oh, and by the way. I'm new here.
