Why does the NBA even have white uniforms?

My brother and I were watching the Rockets play the Heat on Sunday and started talking about why both teams couldn't wear colored uniforms with the Rockets in Red and the Heat in their black ones. That led me to speculate why the NBA has required white uniforms to begin with. With all the alternates available, there is no reason that teams couldn't wear colors as long as they don't clash. Also, they could change the alternate every year or go with a throwback for a little while.

Team - Primary/Change

Nets - Navy/Gray

Sixers - Black/Blue

Celtics - Green/White

Raptors - Red/Purple and Black

Knicks - Blue/White

Pistons - Blue/Red

Cavaliers - Champagne/Yellow Throwback (I don't like the blue)

Bucks - Purple/Green

Pacers - Blue/Yellow

Bulls - Red/Black

Heat - Red/Black

Wizards - Blue/White

Magic - Blue/Black

Hawks - Red/Yellow

Bobcats - Orange/Blue

Nuggets - Powder Blue/White (Skyline Throwback)

Timberwolves - Teal/Black

Jazz - Navy/Green Throwback

Sonics - Green/Yellow (the one with Sonics in cursive)

Blazers - Black/Red

Suns - Purple/Orange

Clippers - Blue/Red

Lakers - Yellow/Purple

Warriors - Blue/Orange

Kings - Purple/Gold

Spurs - Black/Silver

Mavs - Navy/Green

Grizzlies - Navy/White

Hornets - Teal/Yellow

Rockets - Red/White

I like white jerseys at home, unfortunately there are so many alternates that teams have to choose from sometimes they wear the road ones at home. I don't mind that for special occassions, but to do it just because is something I disapprove of. But then again, who the hell am I.

With all the alternates available, there is no reason that teams couldn't wear colors as long as they don't clash.

The reason is 1/2 tradition, and 1/2 not wanting to risk that equipment managers would lose their minds and go on a maniacal killing spree. Simplicity rules, even in the NBA...

This jersey is leaps and bounds ahead of that nasty yellow throwback

Snap's on target. A LOT of the reasons for white jerseys in basketball or any sport for that matter is television. Prior to mass televising, I'd say it wasn't terribly unusual for teams to wear non-white. I've seen photos of the 1950 Sugar Bowl, for instance, and LSU wore purple jerseys while Oklahoma wore red.

In the 1950s there was a rise in television ownership and a concurrent increase in televising games. These games were, of course, televised in black and white as most TVs and broadcast equipment were in such mode. Under such conditions, a white and dark jersey was essentially required for the viewers at home to differentiate between the teams.....

Nowadays, black and white TV is an anomaly, but we still have that TV tradition.

It is what it is.

I believe the jersey you are calling "champagne" is actually their wine (red) colored jersey. Champagne is more of a gold color just to let you know

My bad. I knew that was wrong the second i hit post, but for some reason couldn't remember the name of the actual color (I had the right idea though :D )

I agree that gold Kings jersey is awful, and i would prefer the sky blue throwback as a change. I actually dig the Cavaliers gold throwback.

Even in the days of black-and-white TV, lots of teams struck to one color:

College football comes to mind -- even as late as the late '60's Tennessee and UCLA did not have white jerseys, as the (respectively) orange and light blue worked equally well at home as on the road.

I remember a 1966 classic at Neyland Stadium when Alabama beat Tennessee in a driving rain and both teams had their traditional jerseys -- crimson vs. orange (or brown vs. brown by the 4th quarter!) ;)

its about time the nba goes to dark home unis. that way they can wear their alts at home without having special dates for it. home fans should root for their home teams color, not white. the nhl got it right with the home/road designation. and another thing, couldnt the lakers concievably wear their yellows on the road?

I dont think its as much of a hassle for the NBA to bring both sets of uniforms as it is with hockey, because you dont have to worry about all the different goalie gear, helmets, and such.

The World Basketball Championship, the Davis Cup, Ryder Cup, Iraq: Every day there's further proof that we, as a nation, are not very good at international competition.

well they could make it like soccer where a team will always wear their primary kit unless their is a clash with the home teams colors then they must wear a secondary. note that none of the uniform can clash (shirts, shorts, socks) so if everything is different but the socks are the same color, the away team must wear different colored socks.

It's all about contrast, and if you have 2 teams, having one in white makes it really clear.

Having 2 coloured team uniforms is super-garish even though they're in different colours.

The Lakers are the only team that could pull it off cause yellow is almost as bright as white.
