  1. Good idea. Now here are some rough diagrams for the goal setups... Outdoor... Indoor...
  2. Once we get everything else figured out, next to decide would be what year and how many teams to begin with for both the outdoor and indoor versions of the game. For the indoor game, should the bench areas be inside the dasher boards... Or outside the dasher boards?
  3. Possible terms for positions once we agree on how many to a side for indoor and outdoor.... Center Ruckman Midfielder Wing Quarter/Half/Full/Nickel/Dime Back Forward Defenseman/Defenceman Guard Tackle Split/Tight/Loose End Flanker Striker Safety Rover Jammer Blocker Pivot Goalie (if necessary) Possible terms for officials... Referee Umpire Linesman Scoring Judge Replay Judge Field Judge Timekeeper Scorekeeper
  4. Maybe that could work in the indoor version of the game. But would these targets be hoisted from the rafters, or could they be attatched somehow to the plexiglass the arena would keep up for box lacrosse and indoor soccer? Or something similar to the Arena football screens? If you're thinking of outdoor, maybe they could be like backstops in baseball? Here are some fields for comparison to try to get the right mix, and also designate places where team logos can go... American... Gaelic... Aussie Rules... Rugby Union Rugby League
  5. Next we'll need... - Playing field. - Number of players on the field for each team - Roster size - Advancing the ball. - Time of play: (quarters or halves?)
  6. That's it! Thanks. And I'm guessing the rebound nets can be put in the "wide" areas. Maybe in a condensed/indoor version of the game?
  7. And for this Aussie/US hybrid, whatever we end up calling it... Which ball would we use? The giant ones used down under... Or the pebble grained leather more common in the States?
  8. Cool. Kinda like a revival of this, right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austus What I want to do is a game that combines maybe those two with probably one other minus all the play stoppages for huddles to make for a faster pace of play. As for equipment, I would like helmets that could be something like these... Unless of course, it is preferable to stick to the classics... Besides headgear, maybe the Aussie jumpers with a shoulder pad vest that can be worn on top? As for scoring, I want to be able to amalgamate the Gaelic, Arena and Aussie rules goalposts. How many points could each spot be worth?... Still not sure if I want a rectangular or oval field. As for a storyline, maybe regular American ball falls by the wayside in favor of whatever becomes of this brainstorming session.
  9. Hmm... Which other games can American football be combined with to make a fictional sport?
  10. Sorry to dig this back up... Trying to think of a way to combine American football with Gaelic football, handball, and a little bit of Arena football into a fictional game. The backstory I want to create is one where whatever this fictional game ends up being called supplants American football early in the twentieth century. From American, I want to bring in helmets, uniforms, the forward pass, the touchdown and the field goal. From Gaelic I want to bring in that cool looking goal/net apparatus, the longer field and the different scoring methods. From Arena I want to bring in those rebound nets with the scoring area in the middle. From Handball and Gaelic, I want to bring in the rounder ball and the faster, continuous action without all the starts and stops of American football. Just a rough idea, though I will incorporate any suggestions you guys might have.
  11. What would be the optimal number of teams to start with when starting a fictional series? 6 teams, 8 teams or 10 teams? And also, is there a database of cities and nicknames we can all refer to when coming up with team names?
  12. Where exactly in Tampa proper could the Rays build a new park?
  13. What's going on with the Diamondbacks' lease with Chase Field?
  14. So I take it the Packers don't color in the green part of the midfield logo since the grass is already green? Makes sense I guess. I believe the San Diego text had been gold in the years leading up to the 1987 field you just posted. Also, there had been a time, in home games after baseball season, when they would have bolts pointing towards the kickoff lines instead of a regular X right on the lines.
  15. Is the cap on your avatar a real team or a fantasy team? That logo looks pretty cool.

I designed the cap, part of the Clink Club program that Brandiose used to run. Unfortunately, they selected my cap for production only a month before they shut the program down altogether. No one ever bought any--I would have received a commission if they had--so I own the only four in existence, as part of their purchase of my design.

      I'm very sorry.

It was a raw deal, I suppose, but I did get paid a modest amount, and I really needed the money at the time, so it worked out in the short term. It's just a shame I don't own the rights to it anymore so I can't do anything with it.

  16. Pretty sad to see the Aces up and leave. Especially since they and the old Gulls used to have a little bit of a rivalry in the WCHL and later the ECHL.
  17. Also in those earlier Blitz games, I'm pretty sure the Chargers' road uniform had solid blue socks instead of the white socks with the thin blue stripes. The N64 version I think had the Jets in the early-mid 90's uniforms even though they already went back to the Broadway Joe look by the time the console versions came out.
  18. Pretty good concept for the Panthers. I'd like to see how the white jersey would look with blue pants and black socks.
  19. Yeah, that would work, since the Pads' unis have been getting blander and blander since the retired the navy blue and orange scheme.
  20. Something has been on my mind lately...

What do you think should be done to address player safety in football?

Sorry to wait so long to reply to this.  I was busy when I saw it the first time and forgot to come back to it, but it's an interesting question.  I love football, but I just had a son, and I honestly hope that he never plays, for exactly this reason.

But I don't have an answer.  I'm not an expert on the physics of football or sports medicine, but something has to happen, and it may be dramatic, more than just better helmets or stricter rules about defensive backs hitting high.  It could be something that totally revolutionizes the game, to the point that it's unrecognizable.  I'm sure that a lot of people would respond to any such change by saying that the game had been ruined.  I don't know, but don't forget, the forward pass was developed to enhance player safety, and ended up making the game much better.

  21. I guess you're right. Where would you suggest I expand in Canada? The Maritimes perhaps?
  22. On Earth-66, the AFL and NFL merge, but both leagues remain separate under the Major League Football umbrella and compete for the Super Bowl. In the wake, there are FOUR viable leagues... NFL Capitol: Baltimore Ravens, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Natives (formerly Redskins) Century: Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers Central: Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings Coastal: Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, Phoenix Cardinals AFL Atlantic: New England Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Gladiators, New York Jets Southern: Carolina Panthers, Miami Dolphins, Nashville Kats, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Midwest: Denver Broncos, Houston Oilers, Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints Pacific: Oakland Raiders, Portland Lumberjacks, San Diego Chargers, Seattle Seahawks CFL Eastern: Hamilton Tiger Cats, Montreal Alouettes, Ottawa Renegades, Quebec Souvrains, Toronto Argonauts Western: BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Eskimos, Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers WLAF Europe: Amsterdam Admirals, Barcelona Dragons, Frankfurt Galaxy, London Monarchs, Rhein Fire Atlantic: NY/NJ Knights, Norfolk Neptunes, Orlando Thunder, Ohio Glory, Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks Central: Birmingham Stallions, Memphis Showboats, Mexico City Aztecs, Oklahoma Outlaws, San Antonio Riders Pacific: Las Vegas Cobras, Los Angeles Express, New Mexico Roadrunners, Sacramento Surge, Utah Pioneers
