  1. Is it really an "MLB-endowed" right when the A's ceded it 30 years ago?
  2. With Oakland, isn't it as much about all the East Bay communities forming the market, with Oakland simply as the hub? It's all technically the SF Bay metro area, but having a team on that side of the bridge makes it easier for people from Berkeley, Fremont, and elsewhere to attend, no?
  3. That's fine for one game every other Sunday - not for 81 games on every day of the week. Pro basketball is probably the easiest sport to start up from the ground up - small roster, relatively-modest arena needs, great TV deal reduces the need for gate revenues, and overall, there's just less required. Pro football is next. You have much larger stadium/infrastructure worries, larger front office, larger... everything. But you are almost guaranteed to sell out (even if visiting fans), and you're making money without even selling tickets due to TV. Expenses are kindasorta capped. Then maybe hockey. Way more niche than basketball, and more gate is needed. Then baseball. Unless you're in a hotbed market - and any of those markets already have teams.
  4. Baseball is by far the hardest sport to start up in a new place. Besides the stadium cost, you need to try and fill it 81 times, and it's a non-capped league. It's not like football where every weekend is an event in most places and you can sell out in spite of yourself (even if just because of visiting team fans). I just don't see how MLB succeeds in Las Vegas or anywhere else. Nashville has a chance, if they build a small stadium like Pittsburgh's and put it somewhere accessible, but places like there that lack the public transportation are at a (self-inflicted) disadvantage. The Montreal A's is just a silly idea, though jerseys that read "Athlétiques" (or whatever the actual translation is) could be neat.
  5. There's a link to a story about the A's "exploring relocation" or getting a new stadium in every season-long mega thread since... well, since the forum started. There's nowhere for them to move to. There's not 26 MLB markets - let alone 27.
  6. After COVID-19, Should Reporters Remain Barred from Locker Rooms? Making the Case for ‘Yes’ https://www.crossingbroad.com/2021/05/after-covid-19-should-reporters-remain-barred-from-locker-rooms-making-the-case-for-yes.html I clicked on the headline expecting to vehemently disagree with the author, but I actually think he may be on to something. It's kinda weird that reporters are in a locker room and talking to dudes who just wrapped a towel around their balls or are seconds removed from some major-emotional moment. I'm not sure I'm down with a full-Zoom world (and that's not what he's suggesting) but I think it's fair to ask if locker-room access is really needed.
  7. And the Phillies just-completed 4-game sweep of the Brewers, which netted them +5, is exactly why. Win by one... lose by a hundred.
  8. The only team in the NL East that has a positive run differential is the last place team.
  9. I've never seen Keith Jones on a national broadcast but if his tv personality is anything like his sports radio one then he'd be a good one to start with.
  10. I'm assuming the ESPN TV deal is why they started including it again on the header bar of their site like a real league and not in the ... menu next to darts and topless bullriding.
  11. If the White Sox put the old sock logo on the sleeve and dropped the white trim, it might be in my top tier of road jerseys.
  12. I did a full erase and factory restore of my phone, so it was basically a brand-new phone. Didn't 'restore from backup' - started out brand new. So no chance of 'viruses' or any bugs or whatever. The first site I came to was this one, and on the very first visit, got hijacked every single time by some site claiming that my phone had a virus and I had to click somewhere to pay them to repair it. Couldn't stay on the site for longer than around 10 seconds before it got redirected to either a virus-scam site or a gambling site. After another restart, I'm not getting hijacked, but I'm dealing with 1" of usable space on the phone because of the pop-up ads and other nonsense - on a brand-new phone. This site (not its content or members) is crap.
  13. Isn't it premature to be talking about a merger? Isn't the XFL just some IP right now? As of this minute, there's no TV exposure for the CFL to benefit from, no other technology for them to benefit from, and nothing to be gained through it. Unless the CFL really wants to merge just so it can acquire the Battle Hawks IP, I'm not sure why it's even worth having that discussion now.
  14. XFL and CFL teams could play an interleague championship game? And interleague games during their season? I would think the necessary schedule shift for one of the leagues would make the idea a non-starter, but at least some people are thinking about it. https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/04/12/xfl-cfl-champions-could-meet/
  15. As a former stadium employee, the idea sucks - both for event-staff management and personnel. I guess if you're traveling, going to have to book until Tuesday unless you know you're going to a total crap game that can't be moved.
  16. I wonder if this means NHL will eventually get moved back to the main header on espn.com instead of in the "other" section near "recruiting", "F1", and "bull roping".
  17. I don't like how they kept that version of the helmet logo either.
  18. They could put mics on a literal chicken and pig and it wouldn't make a difference in Super Bowl ratings. If anything, it could help! While I hate TNF, at least I'll be able to watch it if it's on Amazon and not the dumb af NFLN. I don't really get the ABC thing - aren't they and ESPN under the same umbrella? I wouldn't have thought they'd be bidding separately for various packages.
  19. There shouldn’t be Monday night football. It’s time for that franchise to die.
  20. Dammit. Leave it to a lawyer to bust me on a technicality. Fine. Valparaiso Affiliated Individuals.
  21. Per the release notes for that update, it's only compatible with boards that are configured for 2,500 or fewer ads per page, so a few dozen need to be cut out before it gets applied.
  22. What's the difference between The Citadel, VMI, et al, and the actual academies?
  23. What the hell was that? Even the initial sound didn't sound like a goal horn, but like some kind of feedback or electromagnetic sound like when you're plugging something into an amp but don't push it in all the way.
