Random NWSL questions brought up by a friend earlier today. Once NYCFC's new stadium is built, what is the likelihood of Gotham FC moving in with them? And how soon would Gotham leave Red Bull Arena after the new stadium opens?

Gotham would probably stay unless NYCFC give them a better deal. They are NJ/NY Gotham.

They're also still co-owned by the governor of New Jersey, no? That would be fun optics. I'd imagine that + the team's lineage as decidedly New Jersey + the fact that rent will certainly be insane at the new place are all good reasons to stick it out at RBA. Unless CFG themselves want to get into the women's game here.

Unless City Football Group buys Gotham, then they will probably stay put in New Jersey. City already operates womens teams in Manchester and Melbourne, so once the stadium at Willets Point is ready, then they could focus on starting up a womens team in New York.

Do they start in USL W-League, or just strongarm themselves into NWSL?

I don’t imagine CFG acquiescing to a second division anything in America, but I also don’t imagine NWSL being ready for two teams in the same market even five years from now, but I also don’t imagine they’d turn down CFG’s monopoly money. Anyway, who knows what any of these will look like that many years from now. To my knowledge we haven’t had any rumors about CFG wanting into NWSL this far, so…

The saga of the Oakland Roots venue continues.  The Roots home opener had to be postponed and subsequent home games at Laney College were moved to Cal State East Bay in Hayward, due to Laney College laying new turf at their stadium. The Roots play on their own turf which sits on top of the Laney College field and track. When Laney College laid new turf it caused the Roots turf to not sit properly on the new turf. Now the club has announced that the entire home slate has been moved to Cal State East Bay as they have found that their turf and Laneys turf are incompatible and thus not meet USSF standards. The Roots have recently submitted a bid to build a temporary stadium in the Malibu lot at the Oakland Coliseum complex, to serve them for the next decade.

So City Group buying Gotham is the most probable scenario in which an NWSL club comes to NYC?

I mean, this is all just speculation here, I don't think any of us have inside info.

FC Cincinnati remain perfect at home with a 2-1 win over DC United. Guido Gonzales Jr showed flashbacks of when he officiated an FCC game in 2017 in which he was handing out yellow cards like Oprah. My other gripe about tonight is we missed seeing Acostas goal from the corner flag because Apple TV was showing an unimportant replay.

What a wild weekend hours for MLS. San Jose gave LAFC their first loss of the year in a game played at Levis Stadium. League doormat, Sporting Kansas City, somehow managed to find the back of the net twice, to upset the Western Conference leading Seattle Sounders at Seattle to get their first win of  the season. Then this morning Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls both parted ways with their coaches.

So he's going to get a team from scratch and not buying the USL's San Diego Loyal?

At this point Loyal arent involved but could be if both ownership groups get together.

Comparing with Nashville, Cincinnati, St Louis and Charlotte. Nashville and Cincinnati had USL clubs. The ownership were involved with their MLS bids and were moved to MLS. St Louis had a USL club. Separate ownership secured an MLS franchise. The USL owners folded their club as to not compete against the MLS club. Charlotte had a USL club. A separate ownership was granted an MLS club.  The USL club dropped down from USL Championship to USL League One and now competes against the MLS and MLS Next Pro in the Charlotte market.

It'd feel like a massive mistake for MLS to not have Landon Donavon be part of the ownership group.

However, I think the Loyal name is pretty bad and hope it doesn't make it to MLS. The colors are fantastic though.

As much as Landon means to the league, him not being involved with San Diego doesn't seem to be that big of a deal. He wasn't promised a team like Beckham was, and he still splits opinions in US Soccer circles based on some of the issues he had towards the end of his career. I would like to see him involved. And I really would love to see San Diego Loyal's colors involved even if the team had a different name.

Or they could bid for a new team. NWSL is looking for 16 teams by 2026 and that would obviously be an immediate rivalry between both teams for both leagues.

Last night was a fun night of US Open Cup matches. Both the defending champs, Orlando, and  the runners up, Sacramento were both eliminated. Pittsburgh cupset New England. Chicago beat St Louis, Minnesota knocks out Philadelphia on penalties. LAFC (although it was mostly their LAFC2 side) took it to penalties with Monterey Bay, barely sneaking by. Those boys will be tired as LAFC2 have a game tonight in MLS Next Pro. More Open Cup action tonight as we whittle down to 16.

Lol, this is almost exactly what happened to the Sacramento MLS bid, and we all know how that turned out. Two Warren Smith teams snubbed for a spot that doesn’t really exist. Unbelievable.
