MLB 2024 Uniform/Logo Changes

I'm normally deeply against superfluous outlines and needless inclusion of white but yeah, the Mets need it there. (Funnily I noticed someone in the dugout wearing a black turtleneck with the white-trimmed logo, can't remember who.) They just don't look like the Mets otherwise, which is a problem in playoff baseball I'd say. And even a mid-level designer should have been able to step in with some color perception knowledge to say "that's gonna look purple". Actually, they probably did but got ignored.

It's not so much an "unpopular" opinion as it is an opinion coming from someone who doesn't have a stake in it. It might seem perfectly reasonable for someone who doesn't live in Cleveland and hasn't rooted for the team their entire lives to advocate for changing something as foundational as its colors because you're bothered by the league's color imbalance.

But someone who cares about the team is likely going to need a better reason than that.

I mean, especially so when something else that’s just as foundational, the nickname, recently changed. Either way, it’s a big pivot that’s going to take some getting used to for a lot of fans. I respect your opinion on that, but I think I’m personally just more in favor of making wholesale separation if you have to make that change anyway. If it was my team, I think I would want a full fresh start rather than being sort of an apparition of what you decided to change away from. At first glance at their new home jersey script, I always see Indians for a split second. I guess I get the nostalgia, but I think I would also be kind of annoying.

But again, different strokes…

This series, if it has taught me anything, is that Cleveland's identity looks beautiful and I never want it to change.  The outline on the C was so key.  It looks great.

They probably could have waited it out until the vibe shift and been fine

Just look at next year's All-Star Game.

I like the Yankees road jerseys, but my only gripe is that 10 other teams could easily make a very similar road jersey. The Red Sox had a similar one, and by my count 5-6 other historic teams could use this same basic retro design with dark blue and look nearly identical.  I prefer it for the Yanks, because I have always associated the white trim (even though the Yanks had it first) on the White Sox.

I was watching UrinatingTree's video on the White Sox season and seeing a clip with the first championship anniversary logo next to their current road logo on the wall at Target Field made me realize something.  It seems obvious and I may be super late to the party on this, but I never noticed before and don't think I've heard anyone specifically say it out loud.

The Twins' new M logo is the Senators W upside-down.

It's so obvious.  This year has been nuts for me, so... I had to miss this discussion, right?

It's not, the Twins M has flare serifs, while the cap W used by the first Senators franchise was sans serif. Here are the two side by side and with the Sens W turned 180

I doubt that the M for the Twins was modelled after the Senators W.

I don't think that is an assumption that can be easily made.  The new identity weaves a number of old pieces together and then goes for an M that doesn't match any previously used but is white on navy and angled like an upside-down W?  Of course the serifs are different, but it looks similar enough to be a nice homage, especially with them likely having preliminary thoughts for this celebration in mind.

Of course, it’s clearly not the exact  Senators W, but the inspiration definitely seems to be there. I don’t know if I’ve ever explicitly stated it, though.

The serifs are meant to help it cohere with the TC logo (and the custom font).

As the M looks very different to the Senators W, I think it can. Unless Matt Wolff says otherwise, there probably wasn't any inspiration on the new M logo, rather the angles are most likely due to the matching of the M with the first letter of the road script.

This is an interesting tidbit: the 2024 Yankees are wearing turtlenecks from the 90s that apparently have been sitting in storage for years!

Apparently the players “prefer the cotton material”

I supported the black jersey coming back at first, because enough time has passed to now be nostalgic for that era. However, with the continual downgrades they’ve made to it, I’m not sure whether it was worth it.

A couple of things...
1) Orange is a difficult color to get right in photographs. In both of the images above, the orange isn't right. (It reads as yellow in the top image and almost pink in the second. This could vary based on how out-of-calibration your monitor is.)
2) If you read my posts, you may have noticed that I'm not a fan of drop shadows, and definitely a fan (in certain circumstances) of three-color numbers and letters. The current Mets black alternate, IMO, would definitely benefit from a white trim layer. (Just not a drop shadow.)

We have very different definitions of the word "very".  🤣

And I feel like when designing it would go the opposite of that.

Meanwhile, this is the first year the new and severely downgraded Harridge and Giles trophies are in the LCS logos.

ALCS Logo Primary Dark Logo (2024) - The 2024 American League Championship Series logo shows ALCS in navy blue lettering with 2024 above in gold along with a gold horizontal line. The William Harridge Trophy, presented to the winner of the ALCS, is shown behind in silver. SportsLogos.Net

I'd thought perhaps that they'd changed the material they're made of, as past video of it being presented and celebrated with gave me the impression from the start that it was of a pale gold hue rather than silver.  But now I'm looking at old pictures and... it's tough.  They're so incredibly reflective that it seems that the color I thought was present was just a reflection of incandescent light or field dirt, but it just seems to throw a beige glow at times.  The flag on the MVP throphy very obviously being a pale gold doesn't help any.

League Championship Series - Boston Red Sox v Houston Astros - Game Five

League Championship - Houston Astros v Tampa Bay Rays - Game Seven

Championship Series - Boston Red Sox v Houston Astros - Game Six

Even last night the ball seemed to have a golden glow, but... I guess it's all just reflections, with parts reflecting the small parts of gold on the trophy or catching warm glow from its surroundings?

Championship Series - New York Yankees v. Cleveland Guardians - Game Five

Well they are very different - one is flare serif, the other is sans, the height of the font and other technical details like the crotch and the legs. I am certain that the new Minnesota M has nothing to do with the Senators W, and given just how much the Senators, to put it bluntly, stank the :censored:ing joint out for much of their existence in DC, that there was any intention of recalling the old cap logo or effort made to.
