The NFL dominance of sports is bad enough, we dont need a team who predates the Browns by like five decades to dress like the baseball Browns. It’s great that it works for Pittsburgh and Seattle to a lesser extent, but it’s not right for every city. These franchises are completely separate businesses from one another and the only thing they share is the city where they play and some fans. I think people would be surprised at how many of a city's baseball fans do not care at all for that city's NFL or other sports teams.

I had this same thought every time someone with no rooting interest in the Twins suggests they should be the ones to ditch navy and red for the Vikings, Wild or North Stars color palettes.

The issue is that the branding opportunities would be extremely limited if they kept a name that they couldn't design an actual logo for. They've played it pretty safe with the Guardians logos, but hopefully once the name change gets more established they can try and stray a little further from the old brand.

I said it when they first came out and will repeat it here: I believe the Guards' CC sets would serve as an excellent basis for an updated brand.

While the whole "CLE" thing can go somewhere, pulling the "C" from that and making it into a standalone cap logo would be sweet...even with the extra detail. Imagine a "CLEVELAND" chest script in this font...I didn't see this the first time, but they already actually have a font for this:

 

 

I'd probably thicken up the horizontal and diagonal strokes a little bit so it isn't too jarring, but that plus an actual script "Guardians" for their home sweaters...maaannn look. I'm telling you, it'd be right up there with Minnesota, San Diego and Toronto as one of the best looks in the bigs.*

Part of the color scheme stuff too is, people like us will look at leagues writ large and from that perspective can reasonably say "Oh, there's too much navy and red in the league, this is boring." But a lot of local fans don't really care about what everyone else is doing, they just care that the team they like is wearing the stuff that feels right.

 

The Utah Jazz want to stop wearing purple to separate themselves from divisional rivals in Sacramento and Phoenix who do? Maybe that makes sense to us and makes for a visually interesting spread, and maybe it makes sense to the marketing team who feel the need to stand out... but turns out Jazz fans like purple and want to keep it, even if they look like a little the Kings from the 40th row. And truthfully, most sports brands are closer to the Utah Jazz than the New York Yankees, so it's probably smarter business in the end to do the boring thing and prioritize your target market instead of hypothetical global distinctiveness.

Maybe they can just get the "-VELAND" part to wrap around to the back.

Shameless self-promotion, but here's a concept I made for a slight revamp of the Guardian's uniforms a while back.

 

 

But my opinion on their current set is that its fine. I do think they should use the winged-G more, as I feel like it fills the void that left when they retired "Chief Wahoo" from the Indians uniforms. I don't know how to say this, but they had had a hat logo that wasn't just a letter for so long, they need something like that to use again. I don't think the G-logo is perfect, but it is passable and serves as their only visual connection to the statues.

Mets just had to F up and wear that awful black jersey, for a home game in the championship series! 

 

Without the white, the script is just so bland.

Guess the white layer made the jersey too heavy for the players to carry around.

But why couldn't they do that?  

They could just have made an updated version, and wiped that stupid grin off Wahoo's face. 

 

Or made a new and classy logo,  in the style of the previous Washington (Commanders) logo or the Chicago Blackhawks logo.

At this point it should be pretty obvious why a team wouldn't come up with a new logo depicting an indigenous/Native American person in 2024. The Blackhawks logo has history, but if they were an expansion team there's no chance that logo would be used.

It's not so much an "unpopular" opinion as it is an opinion coming from someone who doesn't have a stake in it. It might seem perfectly reasonable for someone who doesn't live in Cleveland and hasn't rooted for the team their entire lives to advocate for changing something as foundational as its colors because you're bothered by the league's color imbalance. 

 

But someone who cares about the team is likely going to need a better reason than that.

As a Guards fan, I would be on board with a full set designed around the aesthetic of the City Connect uniforms. Short of that, though, one simple change they could make would be to have  the letters and numbers in the road grays go back to being red with blue trim instead of the inverse. It would make them consistent with the home whites, and the red pops a lot more on gray than the navy numbers currently do.

The Commanders' current set stands as Dan Snyder's last offense against football. I'm still amazed that somebody got paid to produce a uniform set that is in just about every way worse than what it replaced.
