Well, the bones of the bad idea say 1997-1998, but the bad logo says "last week on Fiverr."

NBA expansion is going to be very boring because we all know who's going to be the next two expansion teams: Seattle and Las Vegas.  I don't get why other teams believe that they are in the running for NBA expansion.

Also, New England already has an NBA team, they are called the Boston Celtics.

Came across this yesterday, a marketer from CT made a proposal for the NBA to put an expansion team in the Hartford-Springfield region called the New England Founders. If they were created, he would say both cities would host the team before an arena gets built smack dab between the two cities

They do know that the Boston Celtics exist right?   Right?

Hartford and Springfield should be a CSA, and I don't know why it's not. I agree with keeping them separate metro areas, but plenty of people live in one city and commute to the other for work.

If you combined the two metros into one CSA, you would get something comparable to Vegas, Milwaukee, Cincinnati, and Nashville in terms of population. Hartford does punch a little above its weight class when it comes to economic performance relative to most other cities in the United States. But Springfield does not, and for the life of me, I don't understand why you would want to build an arena between the two cities, and not just in downtown Hartford. Not only is Hartford the more economically viable option, but it's not even up for debate. This sounds like the Richfield Coliseum plan, only worse.

You also have one of the most elite college basketball programs in the country playing there, along with the Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, so it's not like the area is underserved for basketball.

I'm not saying a team in Hartford couldn't work. But this layout, with the teams splitting time between the two cities and building a 17,000+ seat arena in the middle of nowhere, sounds like a very pie-in-the-sky idea.

If you want to bring a team to the Hartford/Springfield area, go with an NHL team because that area is more into hockey than basketball. There's a reason why six out of 64 D1 hockey programs are in Connecticut and Western Mass in addition to three AHL clubs.

If the Celtics wanted to return to playing a handful of regular season games a year in Hartford, I think that would be enough.

I'm not even going to address that "logo"...

...But did these people not learn from the last New England sports team to build a stadium "smack-dab between" two cities? If not for the Patriots having been to 6000 Super Bowls, I don't even know how well-attended those games would be! Now sure, Patriot Place is undergoing (or was, as of the last time I was there a year or two ago) a lot of renovation, adding stores and some shopping. But it's still on a back route between Providence and Boston, with (as far as I know) next to no public transportation access, and...and these people wanna build an arena between Hartford and Springfield?? I-91 is already enough of a death trap as it is as soon as you cross the Mass state line! (And it really ain't much better closer to/through Hartford). That's just gonna be even more of a traffic hell than it already is. Unless they plan (pie in the sky as that is) on building out by Bradley somewhere, I see no way in which the logistics of such an endeavour would even begin to work out...

If the Celtics ever want to move their G-League team from Maine, they could consider Hartford.

It did make for a great laugh though and let's not get started on the logo lol

Even if the NBA decided to expand beyond 32 (and I somehow doubt that they will) Hartford and Springfield would not be anywhere on the list.

If they do, these cities would have a better chance than Hartford IMO:

  • Kansas City
  • Louisville
  • Mexico City
  • Nashville
  • Pittsburgh
  • St. Louis
  • San Diego
  • Vancouver

Yeah, it seems like the genesis of this was "hey, remember how the Celtics took their four or five Hartford games away when the new Garden opened? That sucked." And I'm sure it did, but Hartford essentially got a top-flight NCAA program--men's and women's--to more than fill the gap. If there's no hope for the Whalers, then there's less than zero for the Fightin' Fents of Springfield Mass.

The Field of Expansion is wide open should the NBA want to expand beyond 32.  There doesn't seem to be any teams right now that would relocate.  The Thunder are getting a new publicly funded arena and the Grizzlies are getting major renovations to their current arena.  Maybe the Pelicans?  But even then, the arena isn't in too bad of a shape to where they are in desperate need of a new arena.  The Spurs are looking for a new arena, but I don't know if that's going to be publicly funded.

An arena built smack-dab in the middle of Springfield and Hartford? Pardon me? I live smack-dab in the middle of Springfield and Hartford and there wasn't enough suitable infrastructure to handle a VERY SMALL CASINO (which had to move to Springfield, by the way) never mind an NBA-sized arena. Where the hell are they putting this thing? An industrial park in Suffield? Good luck with that.

The only place you're building a new arena in Hartford is the north end near Dunkin' Park or something. They are doing a great job of rebuilding the north end and chasing out the trouble, but a new arena? No. Hartford is a minor league town and it is currently doing a good job at that.

I'd just assume tear down the XL Center and build a new arena in the same spot because, as you said, there's nowhere else to go, and I doubt you're beating the XL Center's location even if there was.

I know they've slapped a few band-aids on it over the years, but the design of the arena itself has been outdated for decades, which is why I wouldn't favor another renovation. There's no need for an indoor shopping mall in conjunction with an arena in 2024, which is now a giant atrium of mostly wasted space.

In the interim, the Wolf Pack could play in either Springfield or Bridgeport, maybe even splitting some time between both. And after 3-4 years, Hartford would have a new state-of-the-art arena to attract concerts, special events, and potentially an NHL team.

Regardless of what happens with the NHL, they're going to have to do something because that arena is about to turn 50, and it looks like it.
