fiasco!
Yes, I know the gradient "rule" but sometimes it works... and this ain't one of them.
ColeJ
Yes, I know the gradient "rule" but sometimes it works... and besides, it's cool for non embroidery items and a logo is a non-embroidery item?have you ever seen a hockey jersey?i acutally like the logo, for once, and think it would be a great alternate uniform... but you'd have to kill the gradients, because logos in the NHL are ALWAYS embroidered. STL FANATIC
Actually, the it could work on a logo. It's stitched on, but I could that center circle being of a material where it could handle a gradient. That said, I don't like the gradient. It would look just as good or better if you just made it solid blue and solid orange IMO.I'd like to see you remove black and replace it all with blue. Maybe even use two tones of blue if necessary. Then, while I like the striping on the jersey, see what happens with those newer colors.
P.I.L.L.
at least for presentation purposes... the sky / sea gradient is effective
ColeJ
at least for presentation purposes... the sky / sea gradient is effective it's not really too effective if most of the replies tend to mention it.seems more like it just gets in the way of talking about the concept... i mean, even before you posted the picture, you had to apologize for the gradients... simple fix would be to just not use gradients. slapshot
Lose the gradient. It's unnecessary. The "NY" logo has a weird spiked serif in the middle of it. Put serifs on all the letters, or rework that part so the spike isn't there anymore. You can hardly make out the shape of Long Island anymore, everything overlaps it too much. It just looks like a weird shape with part of a coastline. It works in the original logo because only a small part is hidden, and it's not hidden enough that you can't tell it's Long Island.Black and silver? It even looks like two shades of silver.I like the jersey striping, it works together. Switch to a different jersey template and we can see the shoulder stripes a little better, plus any numbers and lettering you might add to it. FiddySicks
I hear ya... it's just tough w/ a fine arts background ~ can't help it do you ever take critici..................................................... nevermind i dont want to start anything. im dead set against all the mudslinging so im not gonna start. great logo its awesome submit it to the islanders, im done
P.I.L.L.
the "spike" was the remanents of the shark / island that was there before... it may or may not stay, as it may be out of place now. As for LongIsland not being recognizable, I disagree... mostly because this logo is based on the traditional logo, and anyone who's seen that will know it's just covered more (and abstracted a bit) anyway Thanks Buc and Cole. I'll do my best to see it through w/ NO GRADIENTS ofcourse.
andrewharrington
i think this would do well if you lose the black and silver, and maybe even the detail on the stick. people are going to know its a stick (see current logo) if its just a silhouette. i also like the two-tone blue idea, if youre dead set on keeping stick detail, try it in blue tones. P.I.L.L.
thanks for the CC on the colors and such... I'll continue to experiment, as always.
pcgd
anyway Thanks Buc and Cole. I'll do my best to see it through w/ NO GRADIENTS ofcourse. Why do you only thank those who offer positive crit? The best crit is the negative kind. This logo is somewhat working. But it basically looks like you made their current look mate with the mighty ducks look. The "bay" of the island doesn't have the circle continue behind it. If this was intentional, I don't think its working. And dont use CMYK and RGB on your black mixes. That's why there are two tones of black in there. That or you are using the mix for black that is used on billboards, which turns out flatter. Its a decent update, but looking back at previous attempts to update their look (Mrs. Pauls Logo) updates don't go over too well for the isles. P.I.L.L.
This logo was specifically done to answer the failure of the "fisherman" logo ... obviously, the classic logo which they returned to, was much better... BUT it needed updating, and still does... hopefully this will fly w/ the team's ownershipThanks for your critique ... sometimes I get careless w/ the color palettes and my monitor is not the best... but the Ducks? no clue how you'd come up w/ that. and btw, I thank people for negative CC as well, just specifically thanked those 2 that said it should be used by the team... and yeah, it needs some work still, but I WILL get it right. Puckguy14
the logo looks good, im also iffy on the gradient. It's a sharp logo though.
BBTV
I think a solid orange circle w/ blue island or vice versa would look better than the orange / grey/ blue combo you have now. I'm not a fan of the gradient either, I like it more solidified. Also, have you thought about using a different template? There are plenty of good ones floating around out there... Ducks for the blade of the stick and thick outlines that never vary in size. It looks cartoony.

P.I.L.L.
3rd update after CC... the shoulder striping is off, I know. Still undecided there.and I will use a template for this and others sometime soon.
machpost
Have you thought about ditching the outline of Long Island in the background? It just looks like an unidentifiable blob to me. Perhaps you could develop a stylized representation of a real "islander," such as this gentleman from the Soloman Islands:
