BigMac12 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I did the calculations of what an average ballpark would look like based on the 30 major league ballparks. Here's what a ballpark would look like:Left: 331Left-Center: 377Center: 405Right-Center: 378Right: 329Maybe an expansion team will follow this guideline if they build a park.

Every expansion team (if any more come) should copy the dimensions of Citizen's Bank Park. That place is PERFECT

DEAD! Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 That almost looks like Rogers Centre's dimensions:328-375-400-375-328 I saw, I came, I left.
pcgd Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 New Bush is a touch bigger in the alleys than that:336-390-400-390-335Centerfield in your figures is probably thrown off by Houston and Florida (both about 435 to center)

It was also cool when Polanco got the GW RBI in the 10th Sunday.

I just think if you threw those two out the centerfield average would be closer to 400 even. How's this sound for some dimentions, without looking up who knows what field they belong to?279-455-257Hint: Its a past stadium no longer standingBonus: What still standing structure (but no longer baseball) had these slightly unusual dimentions?252, 420, 300(all measurements are left field, centerfield, rightfield)

mjrbaseball Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 How's this sound for some dimentions, without looking up who knows what field they belong to?279-455-257 An odd quirk about the Polo Grounds: That 257' for right field was for the Lower Deck only. The Upper Deck hung out over the field, and the front of it was only about 245' from the plate.

That place is PERFECT If you don't mind 135lb no-names hitting opposite field home runs off the end of the bat that would be weak fly-outs in other parks. In fairness, the dimentions aren't the whole problem. They didn't account for the force of the air in such an open stadium, ass opposed to the vet that was enclosed all the way around. jrh31584 Posted April 21, 2005 Posted April 21, 2005 I did something similar, except I took just the classic era parks (1909-1915) and the modern parks (Camden Yards and later). I forget the exact numbers, but I remember that in both groups, the sum of the distance to the foul poles, the power alleys, and to straightaway center averaged out to 1820. I use this figure as a guideline when I sketch out my ideas.
The_Admiral Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Wasn't old Griffith Stadium in Washington like 415 feet down the left field line? ♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
marlinfan Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 Wasn't old Griffith Stadium in Washington like 415 feet down the left field line? Yes.Talk about a bandbox, Lake Front Park 2, home of the NL's Chicago Cubs from 1883-1884 had measurements of 180-280-300-252-196.West Side Grounds (also home to the Cubs) had a measurement of 560 to center.Union Grounds (1871-1875) home of the National Associations NY Mutuals had measurements of 500-500-500-500-350. As for Dolphins Stadium the 434 is not to center field but to a small notch out in extreme left center almost in center. Center field is really 404 ft.The alleys are a big mystery. The distances for the alleys were rechanged this year. Now LC is 361 (385 last year), RC is now 360 (385 last year). All this was done without even moving the fences in. The theory I gave on a Marlins message board was that they changed this numbers to play with the hitters mind. To decrease the probability of a strike out.A study a college student did a few years ago says right field is 347 (marked 345), left is 327 (marked 330) and RC is actually 369 (marked 360). I don't know why they don't just measure them correctly and not pull random numbers out of their asses. 1997 | 2003

Is it possible that home plate was moved toward CF to shorten the distances? This has been done at a few parks in order to add new luxury seating right behind home plate.

I could be worng though (I probably am)
FiddySicks Posted April 25, 2005 Posted April 25, 2005 West Side Grounds (also home to the Cubs) had a measurement of 560 to center. God, could you imagine a guy like Matt Stairs trying to chase one that rolled all the way to the wall?
