Another one bites the dust

last mlb game to use astroturf was oct 3rd 2004 - yankees at jays... i've noticed the field at the rogers centre has a field turf warning track, all they did was recolour the turf reddish-brown and add lava rocks (yes lava) to create a warning track feeling

what?

That sounds...ummm...dangerous.

The players have complained about it -- perhaps they'll try to change it for next season. I'm guessing without the rocks it would just feel like normal turf.

Interestingly enough, the Ed Jones Dome is leasing the FieldTurf surface for only one season. Presently, FieldTurf is not "portable." It cannot be rolled up after a game and stored. The company that manufactures the surface is presently working on the development of a portable system, however they're about a year away from having a finished product. Therefore, because the owner-operator of the Ed Jones Dome is contractually obligated to provide the Rams with a playing facility within the top 25% of those in use in the NFL, they were able to come to an agreement with the manufacturer to "borrow" a permanent surface until next year when the portable system will be available for installation. Because this is a temporary, borrowed surface which will be returned to the manufacturer, I do not know whether it will be able to be painted or otherwise customized with the Rams' traditional field markings.

I understand how rough astroturf is on the players, I am from Philly , but fieldturf can look weird on tv. I thought the Superdome's turf especially looked awful. I remember when the vet switched to fieldturf for the last year or two and for whatever reason it just looked kinda odd.

Actually, the Vet switched to NexTurf, which while similiar to field turf is a different product (by a different manufacturer) and judged to be inferior. U of Oregon had it installed, then ripped up one year later.

If you remember, there was a lot of controversy over the field, since everyone assumed they would go to FieldTurf, but there wasn't even a bidding / proposal war - they just "chose" NexTurf, and there was some connection between the NexTurf people and some people in city gov't, I just can't remember what it was now.

NexTurf was made by SRI Sports, the same people who made AstroTurf and AstroPlay. I think that stuff was a hybrid turf, which, if I recall correctly, was supposed to be a mix between AstroTurf and AstroPlay. I don't know for sure since it has been a while since I have read up on it.

Also, I recall SRI having a product where it was part natural grass and artificial turf, but I don't think that that was NexTurf.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this mean that every NFL stadium currently in use either has natural grass or a Fieldturf surface and that none of them have astroturf?

Indianapolis switched to Fieldturf after they hosted this years NFL combine.

You would be correct the green concrete carpet has vanished from the NFL and Boise State did switch to FieldTurf although I'm not sure how they dyed it

Actually, Boise State went to AstroPlay before SRI went bust. I have been on both an AstroPlay field and a FieldTurf field, and I honestly could not tell the difference between the two. Both felt pretty much the same to me.

Also, all of the synthetic grass companies have the ability to make the turf many different colors. This is mainly done for putting in endzones, field emblems, and different colored lines on the field, since synthetic grass feels terrible with field paint. However, this also leaves open the option of making the entire field a different color, as in the case of Boise State. Just wanted to throw that out there.

One of the high schools i i play in football just got FieldTurf and it is damn nice. We played on it last August. It does have two problems though, it is damn hot to play on, it doesnt get cool like grass does, and instead of using dirt like with grass, they pour little tiny pieces of pulverized rubber all over the field to support you when you fall and im still finding little pieces old tire in my game uniform.

They will never leave your socks. Trust me. After 4 years of washes there are still little pieces of rubber in my old game socks.

It gets hot, but not as hot as regular turf gets. Its noticable, but for football, kinda a non-issue except in early games and practices.

Ah yes, the infamously infinitely corrupt Philadelphia political system.

One of the true high marks of our American Democracy.

I found out that here in Prattville that they are about to select the bids for who will install artificial grass here at the local football stadium. They are going with ProGrass. My high school alma mater's football team is also getting ProGrass installed in the new indoor facility whenever it is completed. I was in there last week, and it is fairly big for a high school indoor facility.

A guess is that they will just do a painted look for lines, markings, and logos. My guess is that it will be like the turf installed at the Meadowlands (Giants Stadium) where its multi use and has no permanent lines unlike most stadiums.

2 Questions:

1) I thought Martz wanted the Astroturf since he had the speed of the "Greatest Show on Turf"?

2) With the Indy Astroturf gone, could this mean that the combine move to other domed stadiums, especially if Indy will get a new stadium?
