wheateater
Good for him. He has a great hockey mind (though I'm not sure if he knows a thing about defence), so I'm sure he'll do OK given the "talent" of the players on that team.BTW, if 99 can't tell the difference between a bear trap and the neutral zone trap, at least it could make for some more interesting hockey... True--and I'm sure he'll amke sure he has capable assistants to help him out when it comes to the real thing... CaolinaJoe
To me, when you reach the level he did you shouldn't coach. I can't see Cal Ripken, Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Emmitt Smith, or any other great player coaching. It knocks a little of the luster off. Because as a player you can go out on top, but as a coach it's almost always bad when you leave. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. wheateater
...except when you realize that coaches being fired are usually a result of the inability of the players to perform. You can't fire 20 players, so take out the coach. CaolinaJoe
I just don't think "Great" players understand the game well enough to become a "Great" coach, not like the mediocre guys who had to work and learn the small nuances. I think they have a harder time expressing to young players what it takes to do the small things right. It came so easy for them, I don't know if they really understand how to pass that on. It's one thing to pass on knowledge, it's another to try and pass on talent. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. DEAD!
I would say a defenceman who played the game, like Larry Robinson, would be the ideal coach type. Just my 2 cents Canadian.... I saw, I came, I left.

That's why catchers make the best manager. Scioscia, Torre, Showalter and Oates pop right into my head. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress. CaolinaJoe
Caolina Joe, I have one name for you: Bill Russell. Russel took over a team that had won 8 straight Championships. That had the nucleus of those teams still intact when he took over. He had 2 winning seasons without those Celtic teams. "It is the soldier, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of thepress.
