Chief Wahoo Anti-Semetic?

Recommended Posts

I was taking a Race and Ethnicity course the other day, and we were talking about Jewish stereotypes. My professor had old newspaper caricatures of Jews on the projector to illustrate some of the Anti-Semetism in the U.S., and one of them was a template of Chief Wahoo, only with stereotypically Jewish features.

I wish I had a picture, but I don't. My question is, what does it say about the Chief Wahoo logo that the same template for it was used previously for other racist purposes?

chief wahoo gets a twofer its offensive to jews and american indians. its safe to say that chief wahoo and the indians are on the way out the door and in its place is the cleveland wildcats.

I'd rather the team have a genaric name then a racist/anti-Semetic name.

That said, as a Jew, I have never found Chief Wahoo to be anti-Semetic.

If it was something that kind of looked like the Chief Wahoo logo, but wasn't actually the Chief Wahoo logo, then guess what.....YOU WEREN'T LOOKING AT THE CHIEF WAHOO LOGO! Anybody can take ANY LOGO in ANY LEAGUE and make it appear to be insensitive to any race or minorities. The only way in can be perceived as offensive is if you can see these insensitivities in it's original unaltered form. If someone edits it, you're not looking at the original logo.

I'd rather they keep the Indians name, and just bag Wahoo. Not just because it's racist, but because it's time has passed. The cartoon logo era is over.

If they can design a Cleveland Indians logo that's as iconic and internationally recognized as Chief Wahoo, let's see it. A cursive capital "I" sure isn't.

Internationally recognized huh. You really think they know what chief wahoo is in Nigeria, Belgium, and Ecuador. Don't think so. There is only one logo that is internationally recognized, and that is the yankee logo.

They have only really started using chief wahoo in like 1986, so how iconic can it be.

Yes, in that country it is the logo of the 1995 and 1997 World Champions.

I think the Chief Wahoo that has Jewish features came from either SI or Sporting News. They had a page showing diffrent Wahoo like characters featuring diffrent races. If I recall right it came out sometime in the 1990's. I hope that can be of help.

It was exactly the same as Chief Wahoo, with the only differences being the stereotypically Jewish features added. And, these drawings came from several decades ago I'm pretty sure. Though I could be wrong about the time.

As for "international" I'm sure it's recognized in Canada, Mexico, and Caribbean nations. Also helps that it was in the Major League films, which are some of those that pretty much everyone has seen at one point.

Oh, and it's been used in some form since the mid '40s.

If there were any differences then you weren't looking at the Cheif Wahoo logo. Something simular but not the same. The real chief wahoo logo doesn't have those features. I'm not nor do I think RC is saying it isn't offensive to some Native Americans. It is not anti-semetic the simular logo you saw might have been but not the actual one.

It's only been on the cap since 1986, and for one year in 1954. That hardly makes it "iconic". For that matter, the cincinnati reds "C" type logo they used, was much more iconic because it was used for much longer.

Let me position myself, by saying that I am an anti-fossil fuel, vegetarian liberal.

BUT THE CRY BABIES WHO WHINE ABOUT RACISM IN LOGOS AND MASCOTS MAKE ME SICK!

1) The Cleveland Indians were named to honor a player on the team who was an Native American.

2) People who find racism in these logos are only being racist themselves. They are stereotyping their own people.

3) Everything is a mascot. People, animals, colors and verbs. I don't whine that every "Irish" mascot looks drunk and happens to be smoking a pipe.

My only mascot problem is with the "Redskins". Yikes. Now that is racist.

If they had to change the name from "Indians" I can think of two nicknames for replacemets. Either the "Tribe" since alot of people already call the team that anyway, or the "Spiders" since that was the name before they changed it to "Indians" to begin with.

We all have our little faults. Mine's in California.

That Chief Wahoo has only been on the caps since 1986 is irrelevant. The Chief Wahoo imagery dates back to the end of World War II. The team has used Indian head imagery since before the Depression. Where they used it is a secondary issue. The fact that Chief Wahoo - right or wrong - has been the de facto "face" of the ballclub for 60 years seems sufficient enough to say it is an icon of the team. By your logic, the Yankees' top hat logo isn't iconic because, by my recollection, it has NEVER appeared on the caps or game jerseys of the New York Yankees.

I'm not wading into the morality or appropriateness of Chief Wahoo being used as a logo. But it is an iconic emblem of the team, one of many MLB logos not used by the Yankees that befit the label of "icon" (Cardinals' birds on bats, Cubs' "C-UBS" logo, Reds' "C-wishbone, and on and on and on...)

"Start spreading the news... They're leavin' today... Won't get to be a part of it... In old New York..."

In order for the Mets' run of 12 losses in 17 games to mean something, the Phillies still had to win 13 of 17.

I think that the Indian logo is offensive to left handers. I dont say ditch the logo, but at least make it less offensive to those of us who use the south paw.
