They Took Down the Champ

He had the potential to be a great horse. The efforts to extend his life were extraordinary. His connections had a lot to gain from him being able to sire offspring. Had he been a $7500 claimer his fate would have been sealed. Hopefully his true legacy will be in what was learned from the efforts to keep him alive over the last few months.

Giving money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.

Now, I'm not too sure about animals and such, but why put one to sleep over a broken leg? Why not just let it be a pet or a stud? Too much money, pain, etc?

Pain, unlike humans it's hard for them to keep the weight off the leg since they really don't know any better. Thus the break can't heel.

As for Barbaro let's face it the only reason they kept him alive this long was to for him to be a sire. I would bet they extracted some fluids from him before they put him down that they would be able to sell to some breeder for a pretty penny.

No, they are not allowed to do anything artificial with Thorobreds. They have to breed the old-fashioned way or their offspring can't be raced.

That and a horse cannot survive unless it is standing. I could be wrong, but I think its the same reasons why people die when hung on a cross (Yeah, wierd example, but ill explain). Now if I understand correctly the reason people die o the cross is because they cannot support their own weight and end up suffocating. I believe that its similar for a horse thats laying down, and after enough time it cannot support its own weight and suffocates. Now im not a medical doctor, and I think I heard that from some dude on the street, so take that with a grain of salt.

Did not know that, learn something new every day.

Horses die from injuries because of laminitis, an exceedingly painful condition that can be caused by uneven weight distribution (which, of course, happens when a horse breaks its leg). Essentially, the hoof wall gets pulled away from the bone and the rest of the tissue. Laminitis is currently incurable, although treatments can allow horses with mild cases to live with it for years.

Because of this, horses with leg injuries are usually euthanized immediately. However, Barbaro was kept alive primarily because of his value as a stud. THAT'S the problem I have with this whole ordeal - essentially, this animal was kept in severe pain for months for a small shot at complete recovery so that, if he recovered, people could profit off of him.

Thank god this whole ordeal is over. I feel bad for Barbaro, but at least now he's out of his misery, and after a week or so we won't have to read any more fawning media puff pieces about his courage.

oh ,my god ,i strong recommend you to have a visit on the website ,or if i'm the president ,i would have an barceque with the anthor of the articel .

I knew this was somehow Lee's fault...

Definetely for the better. They tried all they could, it seems, but like the owners said, it became apparent that it was going to be too painful for Barbaro to go on. Too bad. Barbaro had Triple Crown written all over him.

Deadspin is in full mourning... :D

[Croatia National Team Manager Slavan] Bilic then went on to explain how Croatia's success can partially be put down to his progressive man-management techniques. "Sometimes I lie in the bed with my players. I go to the room of Vedran Corluka and Luka Modric when I see they have a problem and I lie in bed with them and we talk for 10 minutes." Maybe Capello could try getting through to his players this way too? Although how far he'd get with Joe Cole jumping up and down on the mattress and Rooney demanding to be read his favourite page from The Very Hungry Caterpillar is open to question. --The Guardian's Fiver, 08 September 2008

Wow, just Wow, ESPN has just gone even more over the top with this. The just had on Sportscenter a full Barbaro retrospective complete with NFL Films music and that sad piano music used in movies for sad moments. Seriously they don't go over the top like that when most human athletes die. That's just sad.

Sad news, but to be honest, I am surprised he made it threw the initial injury. When something like this happens some people get it and are sad for the animal, and others don't care. Thats just the way it is. I wish the outcome would of been a bit different, but if it keeps him from suffering for the rest of his life, then good.

While I am at it.... <Insert witty crazy hilarious glue & dog food joke here>

I'm glad I missed it in favour of reading Deadspin's thread. I'm still wiping tears from my eyes... for other reasons...

From the Barbaro Message Board...

"I can't describe the awesome whirlwind of emotions I've felt over the last eight months--you've given all of us so much strength. I plan to name my first child Barbaro, in hopes that he has half the heart that you did."

You mean there's other material to make glue other than horses?

Figured you'd get around to this thread. :D

Yeah, there's synthetic glue and all, but you can't go wrong with the original.

See? (Hint, look at the first line)
