Cardinals to wear World Series patch for home games

from the St. Louis Post Dispatch:

In homes games throughout the season, the uniform will sport a World Series champions patch on the left sleeve. The image is the logo that the team has been using since the Game 5 clincher ? the Bird on the Bat over a sort of red-techno globe. (DG note: It?s the official World Series championship logo from MLB.)

reminds me of this sorta:

this will be probably be the patch:

Horrible. I thought the Cardinals had more class than this.

WS patches usually dont bother me too much. Ill admit its better than the Giants wearing the NL Champs patch in 03. A celebration of coming THIS close.

Plus, its better than the Red Sox wearing gold trimmed jerseys. That was the most rediculous thing ive ever seen, even if it was only for pre game.

J.J. Redick has nothing to do with the 2004 Sawx.

I don't think it's necessary. It's a new year. Sure, you're the defending champions, but it's time to focus on repeating. Don't live in the past. Oh, and of course I wouldn't even want the Cubs to wear a patch when they become the world champions. Commemorative patches should really be avoided at all costs. Memorial is different, that's fine, but celebrating the World Series from last year isn't needed, and the 40th anniversary of winning a pennant like the Twins did was just weird.

I dont get it. We know they won the world series. But do they have to brag about it ? It would of been better just for their opening home game, but doing this like TCR said, they just have no class.

Now, I can certainly understand TCR's argument that wearing a WS patch NEXT year is unnecessary, but why does that mean a team has no class? Its not like they're putting WORLD CHAMPIONS YOU MOTHERFUC*KERS!!!!!!! across the front of the jersey. Its a celebration of a past accomplishment that is somewhat understated unlike a lot ive seen. Hell, even my Bucs did something that I thought was quite rediculous when they slapped WORLD CHAMPIONS above the wordmark in their endzone the season after 37. Now while patches are a bit more rare in the NFL, I think that wouldve been much less in your face, and wouldve been much less noticeable. And its even less so in baseball because for the most part patches are quite an overlooked part of a teams uniform.

So really, are the patches necessary? No, not at all.

But is it classless to celebrate a title in an understated fashion? I really dont think so.

Plus, we all know this is more for merchandising than anything else.

I think we should celebrate and live baseball's past without Miami in the National League.

As a fan of the team they beat, I'm definitely cool with it. I think its a nice little logo. They have earned the right to get a year of gloating. It doesn't really bother me. Now, if it were a huge overstated logo I might, but its not.

I don't mind having a World Series patch, but why do the Cardinals have to have such a "I'm trying to be futuristic but I really just suck" World Series champions patch on one of the most classic jerseys in sports?

That's a big part of my objection, too. It's just slapped on.

Although this idea holds water, its MLB's logo it seems. Not theirs. Its quite clearly a slight mod of the 2006 WS logo.

Atleast the board doesn't celebrate how asinine most of your posts are.

i don't know...i kind of think it's a good idea. i loved when the marlins wore their championship patch throughout 2004 to commemorate their '03 title. i think the world championship is a big accomplishment and, as defending champions, you should be able to celebrate throughout the following year considering how hard it is to repeat nowadays. and this is a mets fan endorsing a cardinals' world championship commemoration, so you know i'm being impartial.

Yes they do. When you do what everyone else failed to do, you can celebrate it by wearing a patch. I see nothing wrong with it. If you don't like it, go out and beat them and win your own championship so you can celebrate it with no patch! So if a team wears a World Series patch from 25 years ago, is that bragging or celebrating? Where do you cross that line?

Part of me has always wondered if MLB quickly threw it together because they really didn't expect the Cardinals to win either, then they do, and it's "Oh crap" in the marketing department.

I figure hey, its for the home crowd, and it will remind them that they did win the World Series last season when they're losing horribly this year.

(Although maybe they could doctor it into a "25th Anniversary Patch" for the 1982 team)

Of course, I can't make a claim to being an unbiased bystander either...

marlinfan, my posts are fine!

Anyway, if they want to put stuff up in the stadium, that's one thing, but leave the uniforms alone.

As a Cardinal fan, I'm not really bothered one way or the other.

However, if they use it as an excuse to relax, not work as hard, and then have a mediocre season, well, then I'll hate it.

But if they look at and say "well, we won this last year, so I better make sure I keep up to that standard", then maybe it's a good thing.
