Why are the Mariners............

Thunderstruk

Recommended Posts

The Mariners looked like crap today. If I didn't have a problem in my black White Sox jersey (not coolbase) in the stands, they should have no problem wearing grey. It was hot, but it was nothing that players haven't dealt with for years. If they want to be hot, they should wear wool unis for a day. If not, STFU.

I like them, but only because of the teal panels. I also liked the teal alternates they had a few years back. I have a teal cap with Dave Niehaus' signature on it (the only signature I own or will ever own) from that uni set. But then, I'm one of the few Canucks fans on here that likes the Orca (though by some fans' definition that makes me not a fan, so whatever).

With CoolBase and these BPs, don't you have to figure that the current versions are on their way out?

The classic caps changed this year. Can't imagine the jerseys are untouchable. Seems there'd be more use for CoolBase as "Normal" and teams could break out the "WarmBase" for non-baseball-weather days -- or, more likely, sleeves.

A couple more pics... not great, but you can see the panels:

From ESPN article......"Hot Mariners blank White Sox, continue to lead AL wild card"

? Sunny side: With temperatures predicted in the 90s, the Mariners opted to wear their batting practice uniform.

Seattle players must be dieing in 90+ weather.

Aside from a general dislike for wearing practice jerseys in an actual game, the thing I most hate about them is the number font.

The font itself is just the standard "MLB Block", same as a lot of teams use.

Unless you mean the gray with teal trim, which really just (more or less) matches the front wordmark.

I wonder if Jeff Weaver will want to wear them every start from here on out, since he may think they have given him Super Powers.

This is crap. Players used to play in WOOL. And there's plenty of teams out there who don't even have cool base jerseys at all who don't go around in their BP uniforms. MLB shouldn't allow this.

90 degrees? We're lucky those poor boys didn't melt.

It hit 90 degrees in Seattle this summer for approximately 15 minutes. That's it. I can't blame the players for being sensitive to the humidity -- they're simply not used to it!

I'm being a little facetious here, but given what happened to a few college players who died after practice a couple years back (admittedly, doing far more strenuous work), I think telling Seattle players to man up because they're not aesthetically pleasing to you is a bit much. Health and safety probably should come first. And it seems to have worked too: 6-0.

You're right - I was thinking the awful number font on the blue alts.

The MLB block is actually an improvement. Maybe they should wear their practice jerseys instead of their alts. :D

Okay...but Texas plays in a sauna every home game. Should just suck it up and wear your their normal jersey.

Except that, as has been discussed in this thread, Texas can wear CoolBase uniforms at home, while no such uniform exists in road form. That is, the Rangers can wear lighter jerseys in their sauna, while any road team is forced to wear a BP, CoolBase alt (does that exist?), or the standard polyester road jersey.

Does that sound fair to you?

According to The Weather Channel, the high in Chicago yesterday was 87°. Why don't they throw on some shorts or an alternate cap next time?

I have seen the Astros in a red cool base jersey. The visiting team is not forced to wear a BP because they have a road uniform already. My point is 90 something degrees in Chicago isn't that overwhelming that they need to use a different uni. How useful is it anyway to switch from gray to a darker color, navy blue even if it is cool base.

Really the only reason they keep wearing them probably is luck, after they lose a game in them they will stop wearing them.

The Astros red COOLBASE jersey exists for the road jersey only. The home red, the home pinstripes, the home white, and the road grey are all standard doubleknit jerseys. And they wear the red road jersey exclusively for away games during the second half of the season (as last year too) because they are COOLBASE and the owner likes the red the most of any of the jerseys.

Yes, it's hot, but suck it up. Two years ago, before COOLBASE, everyone wore the old jerseys all the time.

And one last thing: Majestic needs to get off their collective sorry a$$es and make a grey COOLBASE. They've had over a year to get it right, so get it right already.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!

The "it's hot, suck it up, they used to wear wool jerseys, etc" argument doesn't really sway me. If it's hot in your place, you turn on the AC. If you want to see things at night, you turn on lights. There are things we do for ourselves as humans to make our lives easier. Wearing breathable fabrics on hot days is one of those things. Uniform technology has evolved, and there's a good chance the White Sox were wearing CoolBase jerseys. Why should the M's have been at a competitive disadvantage because their uniforms absorbed more heat?

I don't see why everyone hates this so much (And YES I understand this is a place where people freak out over sock stripe width :P). If they have the option to wear a cooler jersey, and it's not against the rules why not go for it? I know that I personally like hot weather but dislike being too hot. If I played baseball I would welcome the opportunity to wear a BP during a game. It's not like it's gonna kill me to wear a regular jersey, but it's uncomfortable. And even so the jersey isnt what scorches you, its the polyester pants IMO, and players still have to wear those (Nothing is worse in terms of comfort than polyester baseball pants on a hot day). Plus, having teams wearing BPs on the field gives us all the chance to talk about it. :P

I agree with everything you said there...

Also, I've been in the heat in Chicago in the summer, and I have to say I'd rather be dead, lol. I mean it's insanely hot and you fan feel the air around you immensely. I couldn't imagine having to play a baseball game in polyester in THAT kind of heat.

Yes, I'm a native of Colorado where himidity doesn't come along very often, so what one is 'used' to makes a huge difference in how they feel in other cities towards the weather. I'm used to the dry heat here, but not the 'thick' heat that is Chicago.

So I'm glad they wore them, for two reasons. One, they won, two, I like the look.

It's not that I disagree with the "technology to make life better" argument. I'm not some reactionary who thinks we should be wearing wool unis and men should wear suits to games. However, the White Sox were manly enough to wear the regular jerseys, so I don't have much sympathy for the Mariners.

That, and I was born and raised in Texas. It was 102 yesterday with stifling humidity. And I did go outside. Yes, it can be brutal on people who aren't used to it, but if it only got up to 90 degrees in Chicago, then I do have zero sympathy. I played out in this heat in doubleknits in the summer when I was younger. If you have no other option, then you should be making due. You go play your games in the uniforms you have, not the ones you want. :D

So, just to be clear, the Mariners SHOULD have legit COOLBASE road jerseys, I think all teams should have a COOLBASE road jersey, but I think it is a cop out to wear the BP jerseys because of the heat. The Yankees don't have any of their jerseys in COOLBASE, and I don't see them complaining or wearing the BP jerseys.

Go Astros!

Go Texans!

Go Rockets!

Go Javelinas!
