Jersey life...

Always with the questions, never with the answers...........

How long is the jersey life for the 4 major sports (5 - do we count soccer? Then again, many may not count hockey... but I digress). I would think an NFL lineman couldn't get more than 2 games out of a jersey, whereas an MLB pitcher might wear the same jersey the entire year (okay, 2 jerseys, one at home, one on the road... or 3 with alternates... or 8 if they played for the Mets or Astros....)...

Anyways, as usual, just curious.....

Great question...from what I recall, I believe NFL players usually get two of each jersey per year. Sometimes a game-issued jersey will pop-up on an auction site from time to time, but it's my understanding that each NFL players gets two per season, and obviously more if/when needed.

In the NHL each team usually goes through 3 sets of jerseys per season these days. The game worn jerseys often get lots of repairs and some teams used to get new jerseys for the playoffs, but I feel that wasn't every team.

It is mostly so they can sell more off... otherwise one could last a lot longer.

I was under the impression the AFL and it clubs issues players with a couple of guernseys per game. A sleeveless, a second one in case it gets blood on it and maybe a long sleeve jumper. Some clubs then sell them off or players would keep them i'd assume. Jumpers get ripped often and wouldn't be used again and who can be :censored:ed washing them anyway?

Thats how it is in Rugby as well. Our team, if possible, tries to keep at least two jerseys per player. Barbarians are tough shirts, but Rugby is a tough game.

As I know in the NBA, 1 per game. Not so sure. I always see Arenas having that ritual of giving the jerseys to fans in home games.

Generally it's at the player's discretion - guys like Arenas who throw their jerseys to the crowd will usually pay for them themselves. A lot of players will new jerseys for each game.

My high school basketball team used the same type of jerseys as the main British league did (our coach was one of the BBL's refs), and IIRC it was the same type of mesh used by the NBA at the time.

We were issued with 3 sets per player at the start of our second year, and by the time we'd left the team 2 years later they pretty much destroyed. They'd stretched at the shoulders, the mesh was tearing and the seams were loose. And that was with an average of 8 games per set. We stopped washing them after games midway through our last year just so they'd last until the end of the season.

At my club we're still wearing soccer shirts that have been in use for almost 10 years. Sponsors get good value for their initial investment.

They're not the newer "light" fabrics though.

When we replaced our Premier team's kit with a new lighter design at the start of the year the manufacturer claimed they would last 2 seasons, rather than 3 seasons as for a traditional kit. Of course one was destroyed in the first game of the year after a horse-collar tackle (in soccer!) :D

I do know that Adidas Climacool is very resiliant, washes out great and is very difficult to rip. I know that if you just get cheap kits they get trashed pretty easily, they are almost designed to be ripped.

In the Argentinean soccer, a player usually can keep the same jersey during a season without wearing it away. Same thing with the local rugby and basketball leagues.

But it's customary that the player changes jerseys with rivals so the jersey life is 1 or 2 games.

Ah, with the start of every season, each team always features a new set of jerseys.

I know the Cubs give their players 4 Home Jerseys (Whites), 2 Road (Grays), and 2 Alternatives (Blue tops) at the start of the season, but I'm sure they go through more than that later in the season.

Why 4 homes, but 2 of the others? Do they play harder at home? Is there more of a chance of being attacked by rabid fans after losing? Or is it an auction/charity thing?

Maybe the whites just get dirtier easier...?

being a big sports card collecter i always wanted to know this with so many diffrent card brands giving away game used jersey of players on cards. I thhaught it would be a high number.

You can get a couple thousand cards from just one jersey. I have been involved in the game used baseball jersey market for quite sometime, including deals with major and minor league teams.

I have seen baseball jerseys used for the most 10 years, without repair (that jersey is still in damn good shape too.) But for the most part minor league teams use their jerseys for 1-3 years depending on level. Short Season teams typically uses them for 3 or more years while full season teams it would be 1-2 years.

Unlike MLB minor league teams only have 1 of each style. MLB has the luxury of getting their jerseys from Majestic for free. While MiLB has signed a new agreement with Majestic for the same oppurtunity I have yet to see a team take full advantage of it. In addition there are only 4 MLB licensed companies that put the names and numbers on the jerseys, two of them in the north east.
