MLB changing replica's?

So, the phillies jersey's with the world series patch withc hampions under it is out, Ive seen it at modell's and these replica's are differnt as the name and number are actually in the correct font, but its like the swingman jersey's where its only one layer, and the stitching isnt real, the front logo/wordmark is also like this.

Oh well, i'll take that over the generic block font! also it apperas this way on the mlb shop site

Yes, that is what they're doing for all of the teams starting in 2009. You lose the full twill on the front, but gain proper fonts. I don't know if that's good news or bad news, frankly.

Just for me, that's a win-win because you get the actual font without the heaviness of the twill. NFL replica jerseys do the same thing, and I prefer them over the current MLB replicas.

I noticed this with the Rays replicas with the World Series patch on them. I was very surprised, thinking that this had been going on for a few seasons, but good to know it's the procedure from now on. The layers on the old replicas seemed so heavy, this on look good.

For teams like the Phillies that use chain-stiched embroidary on their authentics, the replica twill was really inauthentic anyway, so I don't see this as a big deal.

This leads to three (maybe four) questions for me:

1. Does this mean replica jerseys will now have sleeve patches?

2. Will the Red Sox actually use the correct font for their replicas now?

3. Will there no longer be last names on the Yankees' jerseys?

oh, and 4. How much will they be jacking up the prices for the privilege of buying these cheaper materials?

i actually think this is a great idea.

i'm an authentic jersey guy myself when it comes to the mets. but i'm a big collector and, at times, i'd love to grab another team's replica jersey with a player on the back, but the old one-color, incorrect stock font always deterred me.

i think the swingman/replicathentics have been a saving grace to the replica jersey. it adds authentic feel without the flimsy feeling of old replicas. especially when the nba switched over from the tank tops to the sleeveless shirt models back around '01-'02. i won't go plain replica anymore when it comes to the nba and nfl and now too mlb. good job, MLB!

The Phillies Swingman replicas I've seen do not have sleeve numbers (neither did the non-swingman style) and have the WS patch on the wrong sleeve.

Well, at modell's the jersey is $90, but I would think that its an added $10 cause of the WS Champs patch.

Personally, I think this is a HORRIBLE idea. I was just commenting to a buddy of mine the other day how much I loved the MLB authentics because even though you're lacking the number font and patches, you still get the authentic twill style stitching. You could always send the jersey in to have it customized and still walk away with it being cheaper than an authentic. MLB really messed up on this one.

As I've stated before, I manage a local sports store in Indiana. We were notified of this a while back. We refuse to sell those crappy named jerseys before. Let Finish Line and Foot Locker sell those things.. I think this will be a good thing, however the general public doesnt care that much about authenticity unfourtunately.

Hell when I started in this biz back in high school, they didn't even sell replica MLB jerseys. All you could get was those cheap ass Starter generic jerseys. It wasnt untill the late 90's that Majestic came up with the brilliant idea to make their replicas look like the real things. What a concept. Anyone remember those mesh things they used to sell in all different colors?

The worst thing you can do when buying a jersey and it's quite obvious when you go to an Angel game, is to buy these half-arsed replicas that they put the time in on the jersey, and then half-arse it on the numbers. Part of the uniqueness of the Angels is the font. It's what makes the uniform, unique. A block name and number in red when is should be the unique font with outline in blue, looks lame. Give me something that looks the same as it does on the field. I don't care about double stitching or anything like that, just make it look good. If you want double stitching, then shell out for an authentic.

I'd rather have a three layer stitched jersey, even if the team uses chain stitching, than a crappy screen print on one layer of twill that'll fade away after three washes. Now thats absolute garbage.

No, they don't look like garbage. They just don't look the same. A tackle-twill Phillies jersey looks just as good as the chain-stitch. Chain-stitch isn't better than tackle-twill, it's just different. Swingman-style jersey script next to either real tackle-twill or chain-stitch, that's what looks like absolute garbage.

i have mets replica jerseys that are stiched in layers, i really like it and like the thickness of it. for some reason these replicas i got the name and number on the back are exactly like the authentic ones, the mets replicas just dont have the number on front or arm patches and i could care less for that. does the new jerseys looks like a flat iron on thing now, cuz if they do im definetly not buying mets jerseys anymore...i like the replicas now and i cant afford authentics. i have a black wright jersey, a black piazza jersey (russel), a black nameless jersey, and a pinstripe nameless jersey. i want to get an all white nameless one but if they changed the stiching then im not going to waste money on it.

I like the idea, as I want the real number for a team like the Padres, or the Indians, or most importantly the Nationals. I give the MLB an A for this one.

NFL ones are expensive, but at least you get the whole jersey (albeit screened).

Same with the NHL--a ripoff, but at least you get the whole jersey, even though the numbers and shoulders are screened.

Not much of an NBA fan, but the Swingmans are good, right?

MLB is easy to buy authentic, though. Except the Marlins, dang do I want an Uggla road jersey but not for $290.l

And as we all remember, the NHL replicas used to be very close to authentic and were very good until they started using the edge jerseys. Now they're crap.
