Holliday an A.

The SI article doesn't discuss who exactly Colorado's getting in return for Holliday, but reports have the Rockies receiving a combination of Carlos Gonzalez, Huston Street, and/or Greg Smith in the deal.

Pretty good haul for the Rockies if those are, in fact, the players dealt.

Not sure what the A's were thinking on this one, unless they're planning on dealing him elsewhere now. This doesn't make them good enough to be a contender and I can't see them paying him after this year. I'm scratching my head on this one.

Holy bejeebus. My distant pipe dream is now a reality.

ESPN is reporting that this trade is still not official -- at least two days away from being a done deal.

There is still time for Oakland or Colorado to screw this one up.

According to the Cardinals website, Ryan Ludwick, Mitchell Boggs and Skip Shumaker were possibilities to go to Colorado. I'd love for them to get him, but Ludwick should be off limits. That might've been what killed the deal.

And yet, Ludwick appears to be the most actively-shopped player on the Cards' roster. Two days before the Holliday rumors sprouted, there was talk of him going to the Braves for... Kelly Johnson?!? Makes you wonder what Cards' management knows that we don't.

Well, theres a few reasons A's fans should love this trade.

1) Carlos Gonzalez is gonna be missed, he has the potential to be a really big star, and in the least he has the tools to be one of Colorado's best players. BUT, its Matt Freaking Holliday. Dude is easily one of the best players in the game today. He's the proven star who can step into the coliseum and lead a young and talented group of players like A's have. Sure theres some doubt on how he'll perform outside of Coors Field, but with his combined skill at the plate and on the field its really has to excite fans.

2) As much as I've been up on Houston Street, truth of the matter is he hasn't performed in quite some time and was probably going to be dealt anyway. I'm glad to see instead of ditching him for a group of prospects they packaged him into a deal for one of the best players in the game.

3) Theres been some rumbling that the A's have been ditching salaries almost needlessly for a reason. I've got a feeling that a big part of that was so they could afford to offer a deal long term to a big name player.

4) Sure theres some (and I use some loosely) concern about the A's pitching, but you have to remember that this is the team that has been trading their stars for prospects seemingly non-stop for years. They've traded for so many high level prospects that they're to the point that they have multiple minor league titles, including back-to-back PCL and AAA championships. That in the very least shows that not only do the A's have a lot of young talent in the bigs, but as well have a lot of young talent soon to emerge.

5) But most importantly, it's a morale boost. It shows everyone that with all of the downsizing they have made over the years they're still willing do do what they can to be competitive. That right there is the biggest reason this trade is great. It gives everyone the hope that the A's could once again regain their small market powerhouse status.

I don't think it's what they know, I think it's what they fear.

I think they fear he's a 30-year old one year wonder.

But I disagree. He'd have put up these numbers a long time ago without injuries and with some better opportunity.

The Cards do need to move at least one OFer, but Ludwick shouldn't be the guy. (It should be noted that two OFers would have left the Cards, so even getting Holliday they would slightly accomplish that goal.

Holliday's home/road splits make him a bit of an unknown himself.

So basically, acquiring Holliday for Ludwick would have done two things for the Cardinals.

Given Albert Pujols marginally more protection due to reputation and cost them about 13-15 million more per year (assuming they'd have re-signed him).

I'm glad it didn't work out.

Well, this means that the A's have become the Rangers. Help the offense as much as you want... not going to help your pitching any.

Maybe they thought they were trading for Roy Halladay.

How's that Fremont park going, by the by? Have they even stuck a shovel in the ground yet? Have they even been allowed to consider doing so? Maybe this Holliday move is a concession that the Athletics need to get the turnstiles moving at the Oakland Coliseum, since they're not going anywhere. I was under the impression that they were just punting the remainder of the Coliseum lease and waiting till they moved to contend again.

I actually like the trade from the A's perspective:

They have pitching down below in Cahill and Anderson and addressed their biggest need for offense. Street and Smith were useless to them so its Gonzalez for Holliday a no brainer. Now you just have to sign him.

Can probably swap him later on in teh season for a decent package too.

Sure seems to be languishing. Not dead, but not really going anywhere. Still waiting on the environmental reports.

A's owner still hopeful of getting new ballpark

This article comes after the owner said in August that he wasn't sure if Cisco Field would ever be built. Now we've gone from "we're not sure" to "we think it can happen." Small progress.

The Mayor of Oakland is seeing that lack of progress as increasing the odds that he can get them to stay there:

I heard the A's look at it with three scenarios in mind:

1.) They contend, he likes it there and takes a discount to stay.

2.) They don't contend and they trade him to a contender for a good package of players.

3.) They don't trade him, he leaves in free agency and the A's get two first round draft picks as compensation.
