CCSLC Championship Ring Thread

I like the national championship ring, looks to be a pretty good size ring too.

The ACC ring is very similar to the 1993 Orange Bowl ring.

Dralec I think you meant to say 2003 championship ring because the ring picture you posted is not the ring from 1993. That 1993 ring looked very different.

Otherwise, just wanted to say hello to everyone. This is my first post but I have been lurking for several months. Glad to join the group finally. I LOVE championship rings and cannot believe an awesome forum such as this exists!!

Sincerely,

Karl

Feeling a little sheepish.....how do you post pictures on here? Is there a minimum number of posts required? I was going to post some pictures but can't figure it out. Maybe I just need to go to bed!

Goodnight,

Welcome Karlsgems! I'm pretty new here too. This is a great site, I'm so glad I found other ring collectors and ring admirers.

I believe the picture needs to be somewhere already on the internet (not stored on your computer) and when you are posting click on the little image button (2 spots to the right of the link button). clicking on the button will allow you to put the url where the image is.

Keep posting!

Hey, thanks so much. I look forward to discussing these things with you and the others. I was already aware of your presence in the collectors market, so I was surprised and pleased when you joined the forum. I should have contributed to the forum earlier, but at least now I have. In a way, you inspired me to speak up!

As for your question about how to get more attention to this forum and increase members and exposure...I'm not sure. I am not sure everyone shares our passion for the subject at hand. Everyone in my family thinks I'm nuts. And no one else cares even remotely about championship rings. So what are ya gonna do?!

You don't happen to know Scott Welkowski do you? I think he's out here in SoCal like me, but I'm not sure.

Talk to you soon,

Karl

Correct me if I am wrong but since the 1940's major league baseball has controlled and mandated that each team that participates in the world sereis receive a winning world series ring or a league pennant ring. I am unaware of any instance where a team did not receive a ring. Football did not present runner up rings, only NFL Champions or World Champions rings prior to super bowl I. Sometime after super bowl I, the league made guidelines as to what the teams should receive.

I have never seen an NHL or NBA runner up ring, I don't believe they exist.

Mac, would you be ble to detail any other refusals other than the 1968 colts and recent Steelers teams?

thanks

Sports-rings.......In regards to your last question, how about a team that WON a world championship but got watches instead of rings? Can you name the team and the year this happened?

Neither team won a World Championship, however, the 1968 Colts, who lost to the Jets, were so upset that they lost, they did not want a ring that would have said "NFL Champions" (because the leagues had not officially merged yet) so they went with a watch instead. I just purchased an amazing player watch and presentation box and will post pictures and a story soon.

When the Steelers lost to the Packers in superbowl 45, they team captains voted to receive diamond watches (non gold). This was because their superbowl 43 ring was so large, the nfl mandated "AFC Champions" ring would be too small.

You can see pictures of these items on my site, or backtrack here a few pages.

By the way, the Yankees first championship, was 1923. I believe it was the only year they won and did not receive rings. They received solid gold pocket watches. Babe Ruth's just sold at auction for 717,000.

After 1923, all Yankee championships were celebrated with a championship ring.

I knew about the Steelers recent refusal, but not about the Colts. Interesting stuff. I thought the Niners might do the same but they ended up making beautiful NFC championship rings.

The answer to my trivia question is the 1962 Green Bay Packers. The only championship under Lombardi where they did NOT choose rings. But they won the championship (pre-nfl merger of course).

Anybody hear about the Michigan State Rose Bowl rings? Those must be coming out soon, now that Spring Ball is around the corner. I hope they use some color, that usually helps make a ring pop.

The FSU national title rings look awesome. One of their best rings along with their 1999 national title ring. Thanks for posting that up!

Wow, great answer! I forgot that. The NFL was presenting championsip rings back in the 50's so I wonder why the Packers choose watches? I believe the NFL was pooling their money back then so It can't be that Green Bay was a small market.

Any thoughts why this occured?

I can't recall the specifics right now, but it was a choice on their part (the players, that is). They had just gotten rings the year before, so I think there was an appetite for something 'different'.

Ironically there was a ring for sale some tIme back with the year 1962 on it, but it's the 1965 ring with the wrong date. I want to say it was made for the team photographer or something but I can't remember why the date is wrong....I'll have to look up the backstory on that too.

I'm out of town right now and don't have all my links saved on my iPad. So when I get home I'll check on those and get back to you. Frankly, I will send you the link because I think you would enjoy it also. I just don't have it with me and I can't quite remember the address.

Maybe Ridenlow can help us fill in the gaps? I'm sure he knows some of this stuff too......

Worth noting is how the bengals used the same design template for the first ring as the steelers used for their SB XIV ring. The steelers then used the same design template for their AFC ring from SB XXX as the bengals did for their second ring.

Here's another similarity: very few championship rings use this type of styling, yet the Bengals copied the Steelers super bowl IX and X design on the shanks...

and the shanks on the later Bengals ring has that heavy, bold look, similarly seen on the Steelers super bowl XXX ring.

Great job "King of Rings", I didn't notice the sides were so similar on these rings!
