Winter Classic concepts

Well, I saw some Winter Classic 2011 concepts at icethetics.info and did some pics for Toronto-Montreal game.

I saw Ryan Haslett's Leafs vs. Habs, but I didn't want to just copy and stole his idea. Reason why is did it too, was that these proud canadian teams deserve the Winter Classic next-year.

Something about the jerseys; These legendary teams (especially Habs) didn't so many retro sweaters, so the choices are so good. Toronto didn't have many dark jerseys and I didn't to make same as Haslett, so I had to get it just from the 70's, but the 1967 dark jersey was cool, but I didn't find good logo, so that was it. Canadiens so challenging as well, they did have any other dark sweaters and their legendary current pattern and all others have been weared allready and I wanted bring somethinh new. But I found two good jersey so I made two.

Still using GIMP and Paint templates. These are my earliest concept what I've made. Hope you like it.

Mine will probably never happen. but i dream of seeing Kings @ Ducks in Angels Stadium

Ill start with the ducks since they would be the home team

The winter classic is the most widely viewed hockey game you will ever see so I chose to give the ducks the 90s logo because to a common person who is not a serious hockey fan that is still the Ducks identity

I gave the kings a black and silver jersey because that is the era they arfe most remembered for and they are currently trying to push those colors back in

Except that they aren't fauxbacks. They're based on actual Habs sweaters. The barber poles were awful though. I don't mind them because the team is celebrating their 100th anniversary/season/year of existence, but really, after this season, I'll be happy if they never see the light of day again.

As for the Ducks and Kings, it's here that I don't see the point of fauxbacks. Why couldn't they just use the original Ducks uniforms and the Gretzky era uniforms, respectively?

I did not see the link you posted. That's fine then I guess. It's tough for a team like the Habs or Wings where their uniforms haven't really changed that much

Or you could go with two of the worst 3rd jerseys ever.

I'm going to through mine in here. In a fantasy world, Frank Claire Stadium in Ottawa will be finished for their return to the CFL in 2011. After a typical expansion season, they will host a huge Winter Classic party at the stadium to celebrate it's new team and refurbishment. The two teams going at it will be the Ottawa Senators dressed in their 1930's uniforms and their Ontario rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs also dressed in their 1930's uniforms.

P.S: I know how people feel about the barber pole jerseys but let's be honest, the Sens made them popular back in the day lol.

I agree with what was said above. Anaheim and Los Angeles can use their own throwbacks. However, I'd like to see L.A. with their original gold and purple look. Now with Montreal, I would love to see their globe-like logo uniforms used.

A little off topic but i'll ask it none the less....how in the heck will the Kings and Ducks be able to play a winter classic game? Last time I checked you need it to be cold outside for ice to be a possibility!

Well they could set something up similar to what the Rangers and Kings did in Las Vegas those many years ago. It could work, but I don't think it's something the NHL would go for. Part of the Winter Classic image is a snowy backdrop. Not to say that the Kings or Ducks can never be in it, they can. Just on the road, against a northern team.

If they can make ice for an NHL game in 80 degree Vegas than they can make ice for 50-70 degree Anaheim on new years day

If there's gonna be a WINTER Classic between the Ducks and Kings it should at least be somewhere like Big Bear.

Okay fantasy time lol, presenting the 2015 NHL Winter Classic: Florida Panthers vs. Tampa Bay Lightning at Marlins Ballpark

winterclassicmiami.gif

Accuracy may be iffy on the Bolts shorts, it's tough to find a picture of the original ones. I also came up with a logo based on the famous Colony Hotel on South Beach.

I know it's unlikely but I wouldn't be surprised if a game in Miami happened eventually, especially if they decide to start doing more than one outdoor game. If an outdoor game in Buffalo of Chicago gets some interest, and outdoor game in Miami would draw even more. The new ballpark is perfect for it. Close the roof leading up to the game and during practices, get the ice nice and good, and open it up for the game. Temps have been in the 50s/60s this past week down here so why not? It would be awesome!!

Whaaa?

I mean general media interest (although the game would in all likelihood be a sellout). An outdoor hockey game in a northern city is unusual in that the pros don't play outside. But an outdoor game in Miami takes that even further. I'm pretty sure it would be the first outdoor ice hockey game ever, at any level, in the state of Florida. Again, tremendously unlikely, but in theory it could be done. Once they visit all the northern places capable of hosting the game, why not mix it up in a warm weather locale? Of course there is a long list of northern cities with outdoor MLB/MLS facilities that can host the game:

Detroit(Comerica Park)

NYC(Citi Field/Yankee Stadium/Red Bull Arena)

Toronto(Rogers Centre/BMO Field)

Montréal(Stade Saputo/Olympic Stadium sans roof)

Philly(Citizens Bank/Chester Stadium)

Pittsburgh(PNC Park)

Columbus(Crew Stadium)

Minnesota(Target Field)

Ottawa(new CFL stadium?)

Vancouver(potential new MLS venue)

Personally I think it would be neat for every city capable of hosting an outdoor game to have one each year. Also a pretty unlikely idea, but I have no doubt the games would be big ticket events in each city.

I have to say, I HIGHLY doubt the NHL would want to use an MLS park. I get that the sight lines would be slightly better, but the NHL would be making a mistake by trying to market itself in the least popular league in the US. Part of the idea is mixing hockey with the sports that American's find popular, as well as with our cultural history, hence Fenway and Wrigley, which, suffice to say, soccer doesn't cut it. Part of the event is the VENUE, possibly even more than the game itself. Ask any American to name 5, heck I'd even say 2, MLS stadiums. I'd be willing to bet the majority couldn't. MLB or College football stadiums on the other hand, even casual fans can name mre than a handful of.

Probably true, but people in the markets with those MLS stadium would be able to name them, even if they don't like soccer. Concerts and other events are held at MLS stadiums, not just soccer. Also I don't think it's about marketing to specifically MLS fans, rather sports fans in general. In any market with the NHL and a MLS stadium, they'd fill the place up. As far as national media appeal, after maybe Yankee Stadium, they've run out of big time northern stadiums. Is there much of a difference in terms of media sizzle between say, US Cellular Field and Toyota Park? Coors Field or Dick's Sporting Goods Park? I don't think so. In the end MLB stadiums would probably be first choices due to capacity, but MLS stadiums are a possibility.
