NHL 2011-2012: Possible Uniform Changes

Here's what the NHL should announce on Tuesday. Seeing as the NHL is the current owner of the Phoenix Coyotes they have a very rare opertunity to right a wrong and make NHL team history less cloudy and confusing. I can't imaging how hard it would be if you were a Minnesota North Stats fan and continued to be a fan when the moved to Dallas, Then Minnesota gets the Wild. So now what? Who to cheer for? Lets not have this happen again.

So...

2011

The NHL buys the Atlanta Thrashers.

The NHL Sells the Phoenix Coyotes to True North Sports

True North Relocates the Coyotes back to Winnipeg as the Winnipeg Jets

The NHL reloctes the Atlanta Thrashers to Phoenix as the Phoenix Roadrunners

2012

The NHL sells The Phoenix Roadrunners to Mathew Hulsizer.

2013

Phoenix Roadrunners lose 31 Million

2014

Phoenix Roadrunners lose 38 million

2015

Mathew Hulsizer sells Phoenix Roadrunners to Jim Balsillie who relocates to Hamilton as the Hamilton Tigers

First of all, no one in Minnesota continued to root for the team in Dallas. It doesn't work like that.

Secondly, I think that if the Thrashers move to Winnipeg they should not be the Jets. The Jets were the team that's now playing in Phoenix. They should keep Thrashers or come up with something else.

I didn't know you were the spokesperson for the Minnesota hockey fanbase. My bad!

Well I believe a certain percentage of the people of Winnipeg continued to cheer for Phoenix Coyotes after they left. I know they often had travel packages to Phoenix to watch the Coyotes (Jets).

So why is it such a big deal that the Yotes used to be the Jets? They ditched that name over a decade ago for a dirty dog that eats roadkill and other small leashed dogs from unsuspecting 80 year old women out for their evening stroll. Unless I'm wrong, there's not even a single guy who still plays for Phoenix who was once part of the Jets anyway. If anything they should sell the Jets name back to whoever ends up in Winnipeg in order to help circumvent some of the money they've already lost.

Ok my bad, ONE guy who is at the very end of his career played a season for the Jets. It still doesn't answer my question though.

He was drafted by the Jets and his first season was the Jets' last.

BTW, there's retired banners of Jets greats at Jobing.com Arena. If anyone has the right to the Jets, it's the Coyotes. The Jets moved to Phoenix. The players, stats, etc, moved to Phoenix.

I'm sure True North and the league can negotiate some sort of "shared history" if the demand is high enough. If you guys were so eager to crap all over Winnipeg getting a team, you won't miss the banners anyway.

I will. If the Phoenix Coyotes aren't the rightful heir of the Winnipeg Jets history, nobody should.

Oh shut up. Why to you get so upset when anyone says anything about the Coyotes? They :censored: on the city, and :censored: on the Jets history. I'm all for the Thrashers taking the name and history from the Glendale :censored:-ups.

If things were done like the Origanl Browns move to Baltimore, then you have a point, but since the Coyotes reitred the Winnipeg Jets great, you're giving us Coyotes fan an unjust slap in the face. The Genie is out of the bottle, and going back would be disingenous to all sides.

Um no, no it isn't. You didn't watch those Jets greats did you? How many seasons tops did any of them play in Phoenix? A couple perhaps?. How that is a slap in the face to Coyote fans is beyond me, considering the franchise and the Glendale City Council have given fans a slap in the face time and time again. You guys pay taxes to keep a piss poor team that has never really been yours in an arena that shouldn't be built, with a team that is going to move anyway.

Putting Jets history back in the right city, with the fans that actually supported that team is the right thing to do. Were the Coyotes your first love or something, because anytime anyone says anything remotely bad about them, you throw a hissy fit. Its like you are the girl who lost her virginity in the stall of a restroom at jobing.com arena during a Coyotes game to someone on the team, and then you defend them even though they never call you back and don't give a :censored: about you or the city, just the money that the city council give them.

During Dale Hawerchuk's number was retired at Jobing.com Arena, the graphics said that he was the Winnipeg/Phoenix scoring leader. It would be downright deplorable if the NHL took the Jets' history away from the Coyotes.

Should the Indiapolis Colts reitre the numbers of the Baltimore Colts greats? Hmm?

Its entirely different when a franchise doesn't fail in the city that it moved to.

And what about my AZ Cardinals? A bunch of the retired numbers are players and owners that weren't part of the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals during the Phoenix years. If the Cardinals can do that, why can't their next-door neighbor Coyotes can't?

Regardless of "failure" or not, the franchise record of Winnipeg/Phoenix belong in Phoenix. If this Atlanta relocation does come to pass, then those are the new records that would transfer to Winnipeg. imo, it's pretty obvious how the records should keep.

Here's the thing; if the original city stated in clear terms that the new team is not allowed to those numbers (I.E. Sonice to Thunder in NBA and Original Browns to Raves in NFL), I agree with you, the new team cannot use those numbers. However, no such thing was issued during the Winnipeg-Phoenix move, and changing it now would be pretty dispicable.

twi, I'm not saying you're wrong, I just have an exception to your reasoning.

How about we compromise and give Winnipeg the WHA history now and the NHL history when Glendale's city council gets voted out of office.

I know. The Rams honor those players too.

Yes, the Rams do it well. Winnipeg doesn't need to "take" anything from the Coyotes to honor its past. Hang jerseys and retire the same numbers for the new franchise. Heck, even drag it out with a bunch of special nights to draw the old fans back. It's not like it would be disrespecting the Thrashers history. If they had retired numbers, they could honor those, too.

In short, franchises who move should find ways to honor the history of both the city they're in and the franchise itself. Neither should be thrown away (a la Expos-Nationals).
