larrypep
I think the helmets look fantastic both in the light and dark. A little sad the tradition of student-managers painting the helmets had to end, but I love the helmets matching the Golden Dome.
Gothamite
I still haven't seen video, but looking at those photos I think it looks fantastic in the sun and under the lights. John in KY
I should point out that the helmets did look a bit better once we got home on our TV - we have the local HD cable system and the place we were at has Dish Network.I guess I might be in the minority - I think the new gold, while shinier and more textured than the old gold, actually looks closer to the current matte finish adidas tech fit pants than did the old helmet gold. I suspect that ND had their suppliers (Champion and then adidas) try to match the shiny fabric pants to their old helmet gold.
FiddySicks
Personally I don't mind that the helmet and pants aren't a perfect match. It kinda gives the whole set a nice retro feel and makes it somewhat unique. Plus, it's not like Notre Dame has always had their pants match the helmets perfectly. And for further example, just look at some of the combos they used when Joe Montana was there. Not even an attempt at close. Drew22
- The new paint process is not in the skill set/capabilities of student managers.Their students also weren't capable of recording practices in the middle of gigantic storms and they still made them do that, maybe there's hopeI might be going to hell for laughing at that, but that was funny. For example, Notre Dame was damned cheap when it came to uniforms. Check out the shot of Joe Montana above - that was from either January 1, 1978 or January 1, 1979 (whichever Cotton Bowl they played Texas) but Notre Dame is still wearing the same nylon-front pants that they were wearing in the 1964 Sports Illustrated cover shot. southpawstu19
I saw the game in full and in hd. to me the uniforms are starting to look like they are wearing blue jerseys with khaki pants. Now they said in the video about the helmets that they have finally gotten the pants color correct. So, does this mean that ND wants to look like they are wearing a piece of the dome on their helmets and just walking around in blue blazers with khaki pants? I am not sure, but in a way if you look at the uniforms with that type of mentality, they don't really look bad at all. Equate it to the pants the Packers wear during their throwbacks; they are not a team color but just a plain khaki or brownish neutral color. In this sense it appears to fit ND very well... mjrbaseball
I can only hope that Notre Dame's sister school, Division III King's College (my alma mater) continues to copy the Fighting Irish's model and goes to the super-shiny gold. They didn't this year.

Seriously, I guess shouldn't have said "cheap"; frankly college atheletics wasn't the money machine it is now back in the late 1970s. A small school like ND, even with their alumni with deep pockets, likely had to keep things around. Back then even the top schools bought their gear; at best they might have gotten a discount from a specific supplier. Now, like other top-tier schools, Notre Dame not only gets free gear, they get paid millions of dollars per year by the manufacturer who supplies them. andrewharrington
Count me as one of the people who doesn't mind that the pants and helmet don't have the same appearance. 1. I think it potentially could look ridiculous if the pants were as shiny as the helmet, but it could also look great. Imagine the pants, helmet and numeral outlines all in reflective Dome Gold. That actually sound very difficult to achieve, but appealing. 2. Given it's probably tough to achieve, I think attempting to match the color of the pants and numeral outlines closely to the base hue of the helmet is the next best thing, which I think this achieves pretty good. Overall color match from pants to helmet is definitely better than it was before. 3. I also like the idea of looking at it like they are wearing a set of old-school khaki pants.
