they have been working on new helmets for almost a year now. i dont know if youve noticed or not, but the last few years, the helmets have been really dull. so they went to the "drawing board" and came up with this new paint that is really shiny and has a texture. The color is supposed to be almost the same color as the actual dome. These will be the helmets from now on.

They looked really good. It separates them from the other teams who use plain gold helmets (BC, Navy, Army). And it did look like the dome.

Now if only they could get the pants to match. That was the most jarring thing about the helmets. They had these shiny, bright, rich golden helmets and then they wore khaki pants.

As great as these helmets are, they actually make the pants look worse. I know they could match the number outlines because we have seen glitter metallic tackle twill before (the Mariners use a silver on their teal alts). However, pants are notoriously hard to match with helmets to begin with, and it doesn't help that Nike and Adidas are pushing these awful matte pants now. I don't care what new product line Adidas is pushing, ND needs to force them to make shiny pants that match the helmet.

I haven't seen video, but I'll have to check it out. I think they're gorgeous in pictures.

Very cool, nice match for the Dome.

Here's what Notre Dame had to say:

- We have created a new Gold Standard for football helmets with the Notre Dame reflective gold particle helmet

- This new shade of gold makes these helmets closer in color to the Golden Dome than any helmets we have worn at Notre Dame

- Tradition of having 23.9 karat gold flake in the paint on the helmet continues

- Gives us a more consistent look from helmet to helmet and week to week

- After exhausting many options we ultimately were forced to decide between continuing the tradition of managers painting helmets and have a subpar helmet or alter the painting process and get a superior helmet. We felt it was more important to get the color right.

- The new paint process is not in the skill set/capabilities of student managers.

These new lids look absolutely fantastic. SUCH a bummer the managers can't spray them from now on though. That was a huge tradition for Notre Dame football.

Anybody able to do a mockup of what this would look like with matching pants?

And now you know why there's no logo on Notre Dame's helmets. Years ago when he took over the program, Lou Holtz apparently wanted to add the school's ND logo on the helmets. He was told that the helmets are supposed to represent the campus' gold dome, and there's no ND logo on the gold dome.

I'm not a fan of the texture, as it seems inconsistent from helmet to helmet, but without it, the paint would probably look too electroplated. I think I'd rather metallic flakes instead of the texture, but I can live with it.

This was done on purpose, in the video someone posted the EQM said that over the season you can see the chips and scratches that get painted over. They wanted a similar look with the new colour/paint style.
