"April 20, 2012 - 100th Birthday of Fenway Park

Will commemorate 100 years of history at Fenway Park with a large-scale pre-game ceremony. The Red Sox will play the New York Yankees, same team (then the New York Highlanders) they played on April 20, 1912. Both teams will wear 1912 throwback uniforms"

This will be a sight to see. Yanks have never once worn a throwback. I'm sort of looking forward to seeing how it looks, but at the same time, I absolutely hate the idea of the Yankees in anything other than their pinstripes or current gray jerseys. At least it's a throwback, so it's something the team has historically worn. Still, this is flying slightly too close to the sun (as in wearing alternates) for me.

EDIT: I'm hearing from some other fans that the Yanks did indeed wear a Negro League throwback in 1996. Never seen pictures of it though.

I love those Highlanders striped socks. It's not something I'd want to be a part of the current Yankee uniform, but they do look awesome.

(Also, in a weird twist of irony, decades before the Yanks would have a predominantly red primary logo, they had red in their uniforms. Of course, for most of the time since 1947 when that logo was introduced, there hasn't been a speck of red anywhere else in the Yanks' identity. One of those odd ironies of that top hat logo.)

Wow, I can't believe there's not more photos of that. I did a Google search this morning for pictures, and could only find a picture from way up the 1st base line that didn't show much of anything. Outside of the cap, those are actually really good looking throwbacks.

(Also, very weird to see the Yankees wear a jersey with piping.)

Considering there's a Detroit Stars cap in the front row to Mel Stottlemyre's left, I'd assume so.

Well even without noticing that you can tell that it is indeed Tiger Stadium.

I am too young to remember much of Tiger Stadium, but I thought the park there looked too rundown to be Yankee Stadium.

"Yankees" and "Throwbacks" should be placed in Jeopardy's "Department of redundancy department."

you're oversimplifying things a tad...the yanks did have a handful of variants up until the 40's much like the majority of the mlb teams did in that early era.

the biggest throwback miss of all time was the giants neglecting to go with the "world's champs" unis for at least a game last year...that would've been epic.

One less game fans have to see the ugly New York road jerseys. Seriously, if the interlocking NY was on the road jersey that Yankees could have the best uniform set in baseball. Classic NY > New York Block.

Also, I would be shocked if the Red Sox went with the pinstripe option. Definitely expecting to see the one with Red Sox across the front.

June 8, 1996. Yankees lost to the Tigers 9-7. Bernie Williams hit 2 HRs, but Kenny Rogers (a Yankee at that point) was shelled.

The Yankees' road uniform that they'd nomrally be wearing in that game only dates back to 1973. While it's certainly older than most uniforms, by no means is it one of the oldest in the game.

Also when you have one of the most recognizable, classic uniforms in all of sports, as the pinstripes are, you tend to stick with it. Why mess with a good thing?

(Frankly, I wish they'd bring back the pre-1973 road uni, but that's neither here nor there.)
