Bernie Brewer now has a namesake beer.

Fans overwhelming voted for “Bernie’s Barrelman Ale,” a name inspired by the Milwaukee Brewers mascot, in an online contest to dub a new beer created in partnership between the baseball club and Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co.

About 55 percent of the 10,000 votes were cast for Bernie’s Barrelman Ale. The other options were “Brew Crew Brew,” which won 35 percent of the vote, and “Brewers All-Star Ale,” which got 10 percent.

The beer will be available exclusively at Miller Park beginning with the May 27 Brewers game.

“With Milwaukee’s heritage of brewing beer, an ale made exclusively for the Brewers was a great opportunity to pursue,” said Brewers chief operating officer Rick Schlesinger. “We appreciate the work that Leinie’s and our partners at MillerCoors put into this initiative, and were thrilled with the response of the fans in naming the new beer.”

The new concoction is an ale, brewed with pale and roasted caramel malts and cascade, nugget and willamette hops.

There probably are many Twin Cities sports fans in their company - Chippewa Falls, the site of their main brewery, is about an hour east.

They also have a brewery in Milwaukee, so it's natural that there's some identification there as well. Not to mention that they're distributed by Miller.

We didn't see any logos for the other two, so we'll never know what that could have looked like, but I flat-out love this logo. The colors on that top one are a little off - too bright and harsh.

And anything that keeps the Beer Barrel Man alive and in the fans' eyes is a good thing.

Now, Bernie is their mustachioed mascot, right? So this is his ale that he is naming after the alternative Brewer's mascot?

It's a good enough name for me, though. And the logo is nice. Cool initiative.

Although I doubt the actual brew will be particularly unique. I could be wrong, though.

I'll be finding a way to try this.

I always giggle at the Leiny commercials they air here in Cinc. In one ad they say "whether you're in Mt Adams or Mt Lookout.....". The distance between Mt Adams and Mt Lookout is about 10 miles. Covering a large part of Cincinnati there, Leinenkugels.

I know I'm definitely going to be having some of this the next time I am out at Miller Park. I hope it catches on big time and they sell it in the stores. As far as Leini's goes, I've had just about all there other brews, and they are pretty much all good, even the shandies. Berry Weisse tastes to much like wine to me, but that's there sole miss to me. If the picture is correct it looks like it's going to be a very good full bodied amber style ale. Also I think the ingredients listed are going to be very local, so that's cool, especially the Willamette hops. My Brewers and beer loving tasted buds are salivating now. Wish I could get that logo as a neon bar sign for my man cave.

I'm guessing it'll taste like crap.

Is Leinenkugel's good for anything besides their Summer Shandy?

I honestly haven't had/heard of anything else they brew down here in SoCal.

They don't distribute everything nationwide. There is a perception that the shandy doesn't overlap with competitors, so that's one of them.

But yes, they make some very good beers. I'm partial to the red and wheat, but as others have said the Berry Weiss is too sweet for my palette.

Aren't the Brewers owned by Miller??

No, but Leinenkugels is.

Part of the reason I drink micro brewed beer is try to put a dent in the stranglehold Bud, Miller and Coors have on the market (I want to say they account for at least 85% of the total beer revenues in the US), so while it does sound appealing just by the name, I'll pass.

Plus I think I've tried Leinenkugels maybe twice and wasn't impressed with either beer, so I really have no incentive to give them a third try.

I've had a handful of different Leinenkugel brews, and I've never been overly impressed. Solid, but not spectacular. I liked Berry Weiss when I was I was a freshman in college and still adapting to beer, but now the fruit taste is too strong for me.

Anyways, I know many do like Leiny, so that's fine, but I've always felt that it doesn't taste much different than the various "craft" initiatives from the major domestic breweries, they just have a better reputation for having started as a craft brew. See also: Adams, Samuel.

But, don't take that to mean I dislike it. Afterall, it was just a couple of months ago I got upset at everyone dissing those domestic beers. I like beer of many kinds, and there's a time and price at which many (if not all) of them are worth drinking.

Funny that the Brewers are just now doing something that their Single-A farm club was doing almost 20 years ago with Titletown Brewery and Timber Rattler Brau.

I might be more interested if I gave a crap about Lineys' but I've never been all that impressed by them and by now they're nothing more than Miller's attempt at funneling money away from the Lakefont's, New Glarus', and MKE's of the world. Slapping a picture of Barrel Man on the label doesn't change that.

I've also never been impressed with Leine's, and I'd certainly not call them a craft brewer. (Their Nut Brown Ale is tasty, however.)

I just saw a commercial for a beer they have out that is a combination of a lager (I think) and lemonade. Yuck.

That's their Summer Shandy. It's weiss beer and lemonade. It tastes kinda like Fruity Pebbles. I like it for its purpose.
