MLB Uniform Power Rankings

That's a pretty interesting list, I felt It had a few teams backwards, namely I feel personally that Cincinnati and Houston belong in the top 10 rather than the bottom 10. And as bad as Miami's are, Arizona's still the absolute worst in my opinion and has been for a few years now.

I found that a lot of his commentary, specifically on the 'bad' portion of his rankings as repetitive, and it seemed that many of the qualms he had with the uniforms either had to do with outside factors or personal preferences.

There are a handful of uniform sets that are perfect the way they are, another handful a tweak or two away from perfection and a few that need a total makeover. I'd put Arizona, Colorado and San Diego in that last group.

I think Miami's set fits the city very well, so I find it difficult to bag on them too much. Except the numbers, which just don't work at all.

That's basically what all these "power rankings" list become. Personal preference.

His carnal knowledge of teams' uniforms is better than 98% of the bloggers who write these columns. I didn't see one fact that was incorrect. Usually writers will screw up colors, years, alternate hats, fashion hats, memories, et al.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

These things always boil down to the opinion of one person. That's why I decided to do one myself. It has taken a little while to put together since I am presenting the uniforms with my custom template, and it's a panel of 5 people. But I have 4 of the 5 ready to go. They are:

Phil Hecken of UniWatch

Bill Henderson. Author of the Game Worn Guides

Rob Holecko of the Gridiron Uniform Database and Diamond Uniform Database

Jay Jackson (me) of Diamond Uniforms.

Once I get that 5th person ready to go, a ranking will be finished in a month or two. Hopefully using a panel of knowledgeable baseball uniform aficionados will change the way people look at these lists.

Power Rankings are merely conclusions and speculating based on available facts and a set of criteria. I've found Hecken's rankings do a better job explaining than shown by this author, who gave a report card based on each uniform set and cap in addition to his explanations which seemed a little too homogeneous.

Even so, in a subjective discipline like art, any rankings list is subject to personal preferences. Paul Lukas and Phil Hecken are great resources, but their conviction against all Native American themes as mascots and categorical aversion to the color purple play into their rankings.

Am I the only one who thinks miami's uniform isn't that bad? Tampa bay's and Cincinnati's (they'd be better without black) are way worse than miami.

For me with Miami, isn't not so much the idea overall that's bad. Playing up South Florida is a great route. It's three other things for me that ruin it: 1) insistence of orange as a secondary color when light blue/teal should be, 2) oversized cap logo, and 3) horrible jersey number choice that doesn't match with the rest of the identity at all. If the Marlins address those three things, they jump way up the ladder in my opinion.

Saw that earlier this morning. He did point out that MLB for the most part doesn't have any pure uniform villains. I think he mentioned for Texas at 2nd last only really gets penalized for not having 'Rangers' on any uni, its font is a bit busy, & the colours could be better for the alts.

Which of course took a lot of drama out of the list- even his top 4 he said were all pretty much flawless.

My tastes...

Home Cap - best Dodgers/worst Marlins

Home Jersey - best Athletics/worst Diamondbacks

Road Cap - best Tigers/worst Marlins

Road Jersey - best Pirates/worst Cubs

I find it funny the Brewers home cap is ranked 16th and the road cap is ranked 12th. It's the same hat!!!

That actually makes sense. He ranked all home and all road caps (which are the same for sa me for some teams). This difference indicates that the competition is stiffer for home caps.

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

That just means more teams have one cap, while less have home and road.

Teams with home and road: twins, tigers, orioles, braves, nationals, Indians, Astros, Rockies, reds, athletics, mets, cardinals

Teams with one cap (excluding alternates): Red Sox, yankees, blue jays, rays, white sox, royals, mariners, angels, rangers, phillies, marlins, cubs, pirates, brewers, dodgers, giants, padres, diamondbacks

Sorry, I'm on an iPad
