Charlotte Bobcats New Uniforms (anyone have any inside info?)

Did it really? Does it have any historical significance? Or is it just a jab at how the previous franchise skipped town?

In a Utopian NBA, Utah would relinquish their team name to New Orleans, who would relinquish theirs to Charlotte. Charlotte Hornets, New Orleans Jazz, and Utah whatever. Ah how sweet that would be.

In any event, and off-topic, I know, but I'm new here. Can anyone tell me what I need to do or who I need to contact to be able to start a thread?

If the above is an example of your "wit", there is no need for you to start a thread around here, you bring nothing new or constructive to the table.

I've just seen too many of those DURR..."H0rn3ts should be Char10tt3 0r Ut4h, J4zz sh0uld b3 N3W 0rl34n$" posts to handle them seriously or cordially.

Also, if you lack the common sense to check the FAQ thread, chances are there isn't much hope for you.

I saw no "DURR", numbers or dollar signs in his post. I enjoyed his input much more than your bashing. He acknowledged the fact that he is new, so I doubt he has read through all the post you have. I don't mind seeing things brought back up occasionally. I think if you asked the average person what came to mind if you put "flight" and Charlotte basketball together, many would see a connection to their last team. And, I agree with the Utah - New Orleans - Charlotte name swap!

The only problem with "Flight" is Charlotte, NC is roughly 300 miles from Kitty Hawk. New York City is also roughly 300 miles from Kitty Hawk.

"Flight" would be great if the team was based in Raleigh instead of Charlotte, but about the only similarities they share is that they're in the same state.

I was on board for the Charlotte Cougars or Carolina Cougars. However, Bobcats has grown on me.

Yeah, me too. I never understood why everyone is so against the name. I mean, have you seen a bobcat? I would want to be represented by one

And yet it happened in your state, and this team is your state's team.

/If Chicago must automatically equate to Illinois, I'm not quite sure what the problem is here.

As for the name swap and my reaction to it...it's because so many new posters have this idea and act like it is a brilliant plan that they personally thought up when in reality it reflects no thought whatsoever. Hence the 1337 speak out of me.

I know this whole Jazz = New Orleans debate is beating a dead horse, but don't you feel that the Jazz have established such a strong history in Utah that returning the name to New Orleans would be even worse? What if the Lakers were to relinquish their name to Minneapolis? Do you really think that anyone would be in favor of that?

So, by your definition, the Los Angeles 49ers, Pittsburgh 76ers, and Dallas Astros make sense?

Those teams aren't marketed as "regional" teams though. The Billcats are.

Point taken. However, apart from every Charlottean bearing a license plate that reads "First In Flight," there really isn't much of a connection to the Wright Brothers other than that the event occurred within the state boundary. "Charlotte Flight" just plain doesn't make sense.

I was never a fan of Charlotte Flight and I didn't really like Charlotte Bobcats either (I thought it sounded middleschool-ish and unprofessional but it has grown on me). Charlotte Dragons sounded cool but most mocked it. The best option would of been Charlotte Knights but sadly that is already taken by the minor league baseball team.

The only problem with the name Bobcats staying now is that fans will always associate Bob-cats to our terrible owner. So even when he sells and is gone, his name will still remain imprinted on this team, literally.

It made a hell of a lot more sense than the other options. Dragons have nothing to do with Charlotte and neither do Bobcats. Just the fact that our terrible owner is named Bob is the only reason that was the option over Cougars which people preferred. I would be good with Flight. It DOES have state relevance. I know this team is the CHARLOTTE Bobcats but it's beyond idiotic to not market them as a Carolina team. Believe it or not people outside of Charlotte pull for this team, probably more so than the people in Charlotte because many Charlotteans hate the fact that the arena was built and hate that Bob blamed them for his failures.

I don't think you can even begin to equate the history of those two franchises.

Since Bob Johnson is selling the team now, I think the new owner should rename them the "Charlotte Flight" (which actually did win the name-the-team contest, but he ignored...)

Keep the colors though...

Did it really? Does it have any historical significance? Or is it just a jab at how the previous franchise skipped town?

Actually in an Utopian NBA, Utah would stay the Jazz, New Orleans would stay the Hornets, Charlotte would stay the Bobcats, and Washington would go back to the Bullets.

Could this be a new wordmark?

It is one of the more expensive items, at $40. haha.

I think LEWJ might have found something that could be incorporated into the new design. The wordmark goes with the recent trend of the NBA cleaning up wordmarks (i.e.-Orlando, Minnesota, Milwaukee, etc.).

I've never been a fan of the name "Charlotte Flight." To me, that would be like naming a team the Los Angeles 49ers or the Dallas Astros or the Cincinnati Burning Rivers. It gets the state right, but it has nothing to do with the city in question.

What could they be named then that has to do with Charlotte? Hornets was relevant but we can't do that. Charlotte is most known for banking and NASCAR. Neither of those give you many good options for an NBA team name. Any ideas?

In a perfect world, "Hornets" would have been left behind. Charlotte Hornets dates back to 1901 as a minor league baseball team, and 1974-75 in the World Football League. But that's a dead horse as well.

"Thunder" would have had a Nascar connotation, and I think a much better identity could have been designed than for Oklahoma City, but... that happened.

I'm fine with Bobcats. Charlotte/Carolina Cougars would have been a nice nod to the ABA, but they decided not to go that route.

The Charlotte Hornets were to originally be named the "Charlotte Spirit", but fans persisted and the name was changed to Hornets.

I think Flight's conotations to both the Wright Brothers AND how flight seems to be associated with basketball, would make it work. Not sure how I personally feel about the name. Not sure I really care one way or the other. Bobcats could be a decent pro name, but it doesn't go with Charlotte well and it was such an obvious ego-chosen name.
