Not having a captain seems to be somewhat of a trend right now. The Blue Jackets haven't had one since Rick Nash was traded and the Rangers went to the finals without one last year. Would've been interesting to see who would lift it first if they had won the Stanley Cup.

The guy with an A on his jersey that's been the most valuable to the team. It wouldn't have been Lundqvist.

Not what I had hoped for, but I understand this decision. Being Captain of the Montreal Canadiens is a very prestigious honor, and you don't just want to hand it to anyone. Let us see who's most worthy.

Which one speaks French the best? Really, with Montreal that's all that matters.

Because 3-on-3 is such a natural hockey setup.....

Well it still involves passing, checking, rushing with the puck, setting up plays, etc. It's much more natural than a shootout, plus the extra space means more scoring opportunities, more excitement for the fans, and less games having to go to shootouts.

The Bruins rolled with 3 assistant captains when they won their Cups in the '70s. Johnny Bucyk was the most senior of the three so he was the first to lift it both times. On that topic, I really hope Ottawa follows the Habs' lead and goes without a captain this season. Murray and MacLean have mentioned several times that they're prepared to do it if hey don't feel like anyone is ready. I feel like after losing 2 captains in 2 years (one of whom was one of the longest tenured captains in NHL history), it's best to avoid putting any unnecessary pressure on someone. Take a year off and give Karlsson the C next year.

Penalty shots are more common than three-on-three play, so the shootout is "more natural" insofar as anything can be natural within a game, which is merely a set of agreed-upon constructs. There's something I like about, when all else fails, distilling the game down to nothing but skater versus goalie. There's nothing wrong with the the shootout in and of itself, just the fact that we go to it so damn often. It should be a rare treat/last resort, not a safety net for conservative coaches. That's on the NHL, not the shootout, for wanting to artificially tighten playoff races to boost attendance.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Sounds great... let's play the whole game 3-on-3 then!

I think Markov speaks the best French of the four, if only because he's been in Montreal the longest and none of them are actually French.

Not everyone here has that opinion. I'm an anglophone, but even a huge number of francophones don't care either.

Everybody wanted PK as Captain. Maybe next year.
