  1. If I lived in Oklahoma City and the A’s moved there, I wouldn’t give a damn about Jimmy’s foxx or Reggie Jackson or Mark McGwire. That wasn’t my team, despite what the record books say. Sports isnt real. It’s for fun and enjoyment. The marketers would have a better chance selling the OKC Baseball Thunder than the “Athletics”.
  2. because then they would lose out on 10s of millions of dollars? Sometimes the obvious answer is the correct one.
  3. Wouldn't that make it far less than 9.8 since the owner's vote was kind of a big deal? Without being confident of the results of the vote, it sounds like it should have been either a non-starter, or he should have had lawyers in place to challenge it (like Al Davis).
  4. If they move out of the Bay Area, would it be time to retire the "Athletics" name? IMO it should have been retired in the '50s when they left Philadelphia, but keeping it as they move around and around doesn't make a lot of sense to me since it doesn't have any local meaning to any city that they'd be starting new in, and it's value as a brand has eroded over time... despite their relative recent successes.
  5. What the hell is the woman news person wearing around her neck? Looks like a giant hook with a towel hanging from it.
  6. If you want to see what the Giants playing home games in a dome would have looked like... Side note - if anyone ever gets the chance to go to a Yomiuri Giants game... DO IT. They start earlier than what we're used to here, but it's the best time you'll have at a baseball game that you really don't have a vested interest in.
  7. The fact that they're talking about this as a permanent solution is what's so baffling. As has been pointed out a million times, solving the problem of not being able to build a stadium by trying to build two stadiums is ludacris. It's one thing to use this as a trial to see if MTL wants a team, with the intention of trying to have a ballpark built (or close) by 2028, but... yeah. Is Olympic Stadium playable right now if they had to? I was there a couple of years ago but only walking around.
  8. We’ve been hearing “kids that grow up knowing these teams will create a fan base” forever. The Marlins are what - 26 years, and the Rays 21? I guess maybe 30 is when it’s fair to judge, but in at least the Marlins case we’re creeping up on that and it’s not looking good.
  9. From a Reel Line Mint standpoint, I wouldn't mind the Marlins moving to the AL and elb being in the NL East. Having BOS and NYY on the schedule on a regular basis might help Miami (though it didn't help TB), and MTL belongs in the NL East (and it'd split up TOR and MTL again... though I would understand if people thought they should be together and have a regular rivalry.)
  10. Based on how crappily the decals were applied... probably some homemade creation.
  11. That's been happening to me for a few weeks, but only in certain threads. If you click on "go to first new post", it actually repeats the last x number of posts, which happened to me like 5x in one of the NFL uniform threads.
  12. Since uniforms and brands don’t matter anymore, they should make those and wear them a few times just so they can try to sell them.
  13. I'd argue that while never a starter, he's more well known in a Bills uniform than any other he ever wore.
  14. While I certainly saw them wear the mountain uniforms way more than the classics, for some reason, the mountain unis always seemed "new" to me - even after many years - and the OGs always seemed "right" for both. Can't argue with anyone that calls these "wrong" though.
  15. There’s no reasonable person that immediately associates John Elway with that uniform, unless those two years were literally the only two years you ever watched him play - and even then, all of his highlights and iconic photos are of him in the orange crush uniform
  16. That’s pretty much my litmus test. Would Reggie White or John Elway have looked ok in the uniform? Theres definitely a lot of NFL uniforms that pass that test. I’d say the Eagles and Patriots are the lowest of those - anything more “modern” then them doesn’t work (and neither of them are very crazy). Note that passing this “test” doesn’t mean that it’s a good uniform - there’s still other factors. It’s just one of the bigger ones.
  17. Many of the "classics" sound like they were for teams that were named by a bunch of old white guys back in the 20s - fitting, because at the time, the players were all "all american" white guys that looked straight out of a Rockwell painting. It's 2019, and it's unlikely that if given the choice, neither the players nor the younger fans would come up with "pioneers" for a team name. I shudder at the thought of singular team names, but I also think that a new team in a new league might be better served being with the times and not playing "O6 Dress up" with it's name. There's a balance between going with something that has some kind of local significance, and something that's relevant to the younger fans and players. With any new team, regardless of the league, it's said that it takes a generation to grow your fan base (unless you're a Florida baseball team), so why not go with something that hooks the youngsters?
  18. It really annoys me how the serifs are sharp, but the outer stroke is rounded around them. It looks very sloppy, and poor attention to detail.
  19. You yourself said it's just "rumors and leaks", but there's not even a source cited, so I'm not sure there's anything worth getting worked up about.
  20. I disagree with that completely. Maybe in western PA that's true, but even if I say "IUP", most people in Phila area have no idea what you're talking about. Saying "Indiana" is even worse. I'm fairly certain even fewer people (again, in east PA) have ever heard of Cal U of PA, especially since it doesn't have a any kind of common initialization.
  21. OHMYGOD I would have never thought... THAT GUY... would be in a Kings jersey! To me, That Guy will always be a member of another team.
  22. The Phillies wouldn't give JT Realmuto his #11, fueling speculation that they'll retire it for Jimmy Rollins, despite the HOF requirement. It'll be interesting to see what happens if they sign Bryce Harper, since Roy Halladay just made the HOF, half as a Phillie, and was #34. A few guys have worn it since, but stuff done changed since then. I haven't personally seen this when I've been at the park, but apparently they've been putting "statues" of the retired numbers outside, while the 'official' ones are painted into the brick inside (in generic font for some reason.)
  23. I don't think that required "opening up". I remember that whole saga, and it was that the Nordiques franchise was a complete joke at the time, and he had no confidence that the team / owner was capable of building a winner, willing to pay for talent, and that he'd fade into oblivion there and just be another great player that never had a chance to win. I never got the impression that it was anything specific to QC - just the team's management.
