What delay the games began on another channel.

I am talking about 9:30 starts for playoff games

Right. 9:30PM starts Eastern is 6:30PM Pacific. I don't see anything wrong with it.

Would you go to a Devils game at 6:30PM or even 5:30PM to accomodate other time zones? Of course not. You'd be bitching about the traffic and whatnot.

It's completely reasonable to think that games held in California may start later.

This is all a conspiracy. The NHL is clearly catering to the illuminati's agenda, trying to tire out specific parts of the country so that they will not have the energy left to fight the armies of aliens deployed en masse from Xenu.

I was so hoping that Shaw header goal was going to stand up. I didn't know you could or could not do that, but Andrew Shaw is that special kind of non-thinker you'd have to be to even go for something like that. Even the useless announcers didn't know. Engblom declared "THERE'S NO RULE AGAINST THIS!". Well yeah there is, but we've never had to enforce it before.

Anyways, at this point I'm just rooting for good long series so I'm happy with the two splits heading into game 3.

Yes, I would love it.

Of course its 5 blocks from work to the Prudential Center.

I just think it is unfair that games end too late, I mean some of these NBA Games were tipping at 10 to 11 that just aint right.

I guess Shaw immediately started yelling "I PUT IT IN OFF MY HEAD, I PUT IT IN OFF MY HEAD!" after it went in.

Chicago Hockey Market >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> California Hockey Market. NHL's been scheduling the Blackhawks at 8:30 ct puck drops for the entire playoffs. It's tiresome, literally.

edit for clarification: Chicago/Midwest has a higher viewership and potential fan base than the west coast. Starting games at times that discriminate against basically all kids and most adults for a team that's shown an incredibly obvious penchant for overtime is stupid.

NFL prime time games - 8:30 EST

World Series games - 8:30 EST

NBA playoffs - alternating between 8 and 9 EST

NHL - 9:30 EST

They have to consider 1) Much more people are watching in Chicago than California, and 2) Probably 90% of NHL fans with no rooting interests who would watch this series are on the east coast. I know hockey is at a disadvantage because of the nature of overtime, and the fact that it's pretty common for teams to end up playing two entire games like last night. Still, I think such silliness as ending after 2 am EST once again keep this sport fringy. If a baseball playoff game went 19 innings and ended at 2:30 EST, it would be unusual and a huge story. NBA game going 8 overtimes and 5 hours? Once in a lifetime. Hockey does it? Oh, that's just hockey. That's what you signed up for. And honestly, I don't think there's a solution, as even moving up the start time an hour wouldn't be perfect. It just sucks that fanbases have to go into every playoff game with a reasonable expectation that the game might not end until 1 in the morning.

I get all that, but at the end of the day, this was still a home game for Anaheim. Lots of these people can't be arsed to go to games with normal puck-drops because the traffic is so bad; to expect them to get to a game at around 5 would be ridiculous and the Ducks would have a legitimate bone to pick with the league. Can you imagine a 5 p.m. drop on a weeknight in Chicago?

He admitted attracting people to the sport has not been easy, even to a second round playoff game as evident on Thursday night's match-up against the Calgary Flames where hundreds of empty seats could be seen from the stands.

"You have season ticket holders that don't want to deal with the large crowds and the traffic coming in," said Mulchay. "The traffic is downtown in the OC and LA is terrible, worse than any place in U.S. and it's on a weeknight and people work. [Hockey here] is up and coming, it's not going to get to that level [where it is in Canada] because there are so many other sports going on.

And do those people even want to see the beginning of the game, anyway?

Tank, I definitely get where you are coming from. Sporting event timing was the biggest downside of my 2.5 years in the eastern time zone (and that's when I was young). The 2003 and 2004 T-Wolves/Lakers series had games routinely end after midnight. One (a one-OT game) went until about 2:00...that's pretty damn late for the Minny locals as well. Monday Night Football, and just about any game played in the Mountain or Pacific time zones were tough to watch.

It was frustrating but with four time zones, there's not much you can do (though I did get particularly frustrated about games that went late on Sunday). I kinda think we're stuck with the 8:30 Central start for the games in Anaheim. At least the weeknight games.

Then again, our beloved commissioner has a great modern idea for how to get around late puck drops:

"Tape it." - NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman

It's the Hawks and they're likely to play OT games, there's no perfect solution. Even if they started a half hour or an hour earlier, it wouldn't have made the ending time much less absurd in Chicago. I know the traffic in LA/OC is terrible, and I experienced it first hand when a noon trip from Anaheim to Hollywood which was supposed to take forty minutes took an hour fifteen. I almost missed The Price is Right taping! However, I think west coast fans are pretty used to getting screw over with start times, so it wouldn't be like people would say "Wait, we started at 5:30?!" They deal with it for primetime NFL games and advanced round games in baseball and basketball. Like I said, there's really no way to fix it and make everybody happy, but I think routinely having playoff games end well after midnight does more to hurt the league than help, even if they are great games.

Well all the trendoids live in Cali and god forbid they miss the start of games; so everyhing must start late at night so they are home even though they dont really care and just watch sports because it is the thing to do and California is the most important state because thats where all the fabouless people live. The East Coast fans they dont matter. That is why MNF starts at almost 9 becuase the Cali people cant miss the start of the game even though the ending is more important and the game dont end to midnight meaning kids on the east coast never see the ends of World Series and MNF. Never see NBA Finals games end and overtime in the NHL.

Yeah this has grinded my gears for years.

Oh, get bent.

Once in awhile, a 3OT game that doesn't end until WELL after midnight is a cool story and adds to the epic-ness of that game. When it happens multiple times in one playoff, it just gets obnoxious. I stayed up for that 3OT game against the Preds, and I was fairly sluggish at work the next day, but, you know, "Triple overtime victory! How often is that gonna happen!" Turns out, with the Hawks at least, kinda often.
