Pro football hall of fame 2015

I've wondered why it's called the "Professional Football Hall of Fame" when the only members are those that played in the NFL and the predecessors?

Well the NFL is the best football league in the world. So if you can't make it in the NFL, you probably aren't a Hall of Famer.

The CFL is a professional league as well. If this isn't the "NFL Hall of Fame," why are the records of those that played in the USFL - Steve Young, Jim Kelly, Reggie White, etc - excluded? Why aren't Larry Czonka's WFL time mentioned? The Hall needs to be honest and say they're just the NFL Hall.

Jeff George maybe?

I don't know. George was a Journeyman quarterback and they don't usually make it in the hall of fame. I feel the same for Vinny Testaverde, Chris Chandler, Steve Deberg, and Dave Krieg.

If DeBerg was an offensive lineman, he would be in the hall: longevity and workman/tote-the-lunchbox mentality.

He was being sarcastic, Jeff George is considered one of the worst quarterbacks of all time.

Minor leagues don't count. Derek Jeter's plaque in Cooperstown doesn't say anything about his time with the Columbus Clippers, either.

I'll be upset if Marvin Harrison isn't in Canton next year. :(

He will be. No other major wideout is in play besides Terrell Owens, who's in his first year (receivers don't usually get in year one, unless you're the GOAT).

Don't forget "Isaac Holt".

Neither of whom are on the same level as Harrison.

Um...they are. Their stats are pretty close to Harrison despite them cannibalizing each other for most of their respective careers.

No offense, but I can't decide if you're just throwing stuff out there because you're new or if you really are this clueless when it comes to football.

I feel the shooting incidents have kept Harrison out of the HoF. And this most recent one in 2014 certainly isn't doing him any favors.

Technically, "character" and off the field issues are not part of the criteria for Pro Football HOF voters. That's not to say voters don't let those things influence them but they're supposed to judge a HOF candidate solely on that candidate's on field performance.

Yes. I am new and just getting the hang of the website and the forum. I have never wrote to a blog before.

Welcome!

But I hope you're joking about the players you floated out there.

Fair enough, I guess. Here's something that may help with your adjustment - this isn't a blog, it's a forum or message board.

Exactly. When you catch 143 passes in 2002 (which is still the record), averaged 84.77 receptions per season (2nd behind Sterling Sharpe and averaging 93 receptions per season before injuries), and holds 48 NFL records including being part of the greatest QB-WR duo of all time (Manning to Harrison), you deserve to be inducted to Canton. Also having a Super Bowl ring helps too. Don't get me wrong, Isaac Bruce and Torry Holt are great players (underrated too), but are overshadowed by players like Randy Moss, Cris Carter, Marvin Harrison, and TO throughout their careers (and that hurts their chances).

Only if his introductory speaker is Ryan Leaf!

Some of these suggestions are starting to get ridiculous. Here I am barely comfortable even trying to somewhat defend Donovan McNabb, and someone throws out Antwan Randle El? And Kordell Stewart?! You guys have actually seen the sport of professional football being played before, right?

"That Heath Schuler guy was a legend! Beat out Manning AND Todd Helton! How's he not in the hall?!?!"

They're only overshadowed in the vague sense that both of them took touches away from the other.

That said Bruce has better yards per catch and more receiving yards than Harrison even with that Holt problem, while Holt also has a better yards per catch stat..
