In the realm of dumb coaching decisions, Dan Cloutier was just named the goaltending coach for the Vancouver Canucks.

Alright then.

Clearly it's "dump the bad news" time after the NHL's epic blunder.

Funny. Bettman had the same look on his face the last time he visited Glendale, Arizona...

Anybody want to photoshop Bettman in place of the possum mascot in this image?

Not shocked that Vegas got approved. At this point Atlanta is getting another NHL franchise before Quebec does (feels to me like that).

nope nope nope we can never ever ever add another team that plays in Eastern Time

Maybe I'm the only one that thinks Vegas will be a good location for a team. Whatever.

Arena is near the strip, where apparently the locals avoid.  Will it be 12,000 road fans & 4,000 home fans every night?  Cuz that will be hilarious.

That's an assumption. That's like me saying I avoid downtown St. Louis so I won't go to Blues games. That's not the case at all.

I imagine locals of Vegas avoid the strip because once you've been there and done it so much, you get tired of it. I imagine they get tired of the traffic, the vacationers, parking etc. I don't blame them.

Now that they have a team and a reason to go to the strip, that's a whole other story. Will there be visiting fans? Hell Yes. Will it out number local fans? I'd imagine the first few years, yes. Vegas should support outside fans from coming to games, at the end of the day they are still getting your money and you are still supporting their city. It's actually pretty genius.

I mean if you think about it, let's just put out a scenario. If I were planning a vacation to watch the Blues out of town would I rather go to Las Vegas or go to Buffalo? Hmmm, yeah Vegas can just take all my money.

However, the team is competing with three (four if you include The Orleans Arena) other arenas plus casino theater venues regarding entertainment. The era of the $49 weekend room and the $9.99 buffett in Las Vegas is long gone.  The NHL "vacationer" will be in for sticker shock.

Regarding the other arena's and entertainment, that's reaching a little. That's like saying no one will go to a Rangers game because New York has so many other sports teams and entertainment to choose from. You will have your hockey fans (casual and die hard) that will go to hockey games. You will have your theatre, magic and concert fans that will continue to go to all of their respectful events.

When I was in Vegas a few years ago, our hotel room was roughly around $100 and didn't bother to go to the buffets (rather went out and experienced actual nationally known restaurants. Even then the buffet was only like $30 bucks. I have a buddy that works at a casino in Vegas and basically said that the only difference between there and St. Louis is that gas costs more. So I don't think it'll really break any fans bank account to take a weekend trip to dish out $100 for a room (which I'm sure you'd split with other people) considering you are likely going to spend $75-100 per ticket to the game.

Again that's assuming that you don't look at casino's ahead of time that may offer a comp package with discounts on rooms or even tickets to the game.

But but we have Frank Lloyd Wright buildings and a strong Burmese immigrant population in Buffalo!

I've been pricing-out a Vegas trip...

I can get 3 nights (flight and hotel) for under $500 CDN.

If I go to a Leafs game (where I have to stay overnight because I'm not driving after a few wobbly-pops) and pay their obscene prices for a stub...

It's not gonna be a huge price difference.

Vegas will definitely be on my hockey bucket list.

Love Buffalo's city hall. I wish Chicago had a government building of that timeless beauty. Instead we have something from Time Chasers.

That must be what it's like to live inside a Captain EO pinball machine from 1985.

I think if there's any MST3K set it looks like it's the Nirvana ("Come as you are to my mall, to my atrium...") compound from Overdrawn at the Memory Bank.

Just for the record, I know that I posted a picture of the state government building, and that Chicago City Hall is a fine edifice, albeit a bit lost in the crowd.
