Racial Injustice's Impact on Sports

I hope we can behave in here.  If the mods want to handle this differently, please chime in.  I feel like this needs its own department for now, because things are cross-pollinating and muddying the waters of each thread.  I won't shed a tear if this is closed, but feel it's worth a try for the simple sake of organizing the discussion.

----

Bucks boycott game vs. Magic, who similarly refuse to accept forfeit.  NBA subsequently postpones all games and no reschedules have been made.

The MLB's Milwaukee Brewers are potentially boycotting as well:

at this point, i think we have crossed the Rubicon when it comes to all of this.

sooner or later, the topic would have come up.

I'm more having this thread because A - we proved it could mostly work in the COVID thread, and B - this discussion is going to bleed heavily into the NBA and potentially other Big 4 threads, and may as well make a central hub.

anyway, how long do you all think this will last (the boycotting of games).

Not sure.  The NBA's may be for the remainder of the season, but they're talking it over:

I pray if/when this happens to a sport that I care more about, I am as proud of it happening and don't whine like a little :censored: that I'm missing my sports.

I hope I'm that good.

Go Bucks. Proud of you all. Please, world, let this be the change.

It's where I sit.

With the Brewers and Reds not playing today, I wonder if the rest of the MLB will follow suit. Also wonder if the NHL will respond similarly.

Is there any historical precedent for this? Obviously there is Kaepernick as far as protesting goes, but has there ever been a sports team that decided to boycott playing, specifically as a civil rights protest? This feels novel.

I support the players 100%. This is an extremely powerful statement. As much as we all love to watch sports, this is so, so, much bigger and hopefully brings some urgency to curb the issues that continue to plague the United States. Kudos to the Milwaukee Bucks.

I was going to ask this in the NBA thread earlier. We can’t avoid that kind of discussion at this point, right?

Top response:  “Thank god for the NHL.”

The closest I can think of is the Clippers-Warriors playoff game after Donald Sterling's remarks. In terms of a mass cancellation, it would be after JFK was shot.

For historical reference, If the Bucks had forfeited as they originally intended to, I believe it would've been the first in NBA history. The Malice at the Palace was suspended and cancelled, but there was not a forfeit.
